Man this Kazuya vs Bayonetta matchup is really interesting given Sakurai's most recent video He formed the core mechanics of smash (percent, DI, maybe even SDI) out of a desire to emphasize improvisation in the combo system. In their initial iterations, Ultimate Kazuya and 4 Bayonetta, both characters had/have an expansive combo game, but only one optimal combo that can always lead to a kill if done right. At least to me, it seems like Sakurai fails to implement that improvisation on the first go. But one game later, Bayo's been reworked. Her combos are still as flashy and expressive, but now, in my opinion, they are the epitome of that improvisation that Smash innovated. They're still potentially long and potentially powerful, but every followup is situational and nuanced. It's up to the Bayonetta player to drag their opponent to a platform to get an extension or to the blastzone to kill, and it's up to the opponent to know what Bayo is going for and DI/SDI to foil the plan.

Nintendo reduced the SDI multiplier on Witch Twist in Ultimate. If anything sm4sh bayo had a much more improvised combo game because she had more followup options (fair1) and her specials were much more susceptible to SDI.

@@thistamndypo overall SDI was more powerful in Smash 4, but I don't think that even has much to do with Bayo's design improvement in Ultimate. Compare the recent sets against different Bayos by Marss and Gluto. One escaped many combo starters with SDI and the other took damage because they couldn't escape. But my comment was less about SDI and more about the reward of her combos. They don't kill nearly as easily or early. Therefore there is more nuance in the followups. Do you attempt to go for a kill? A setup to an edgeguard? Can you drag your opponent to a platform to reset your resources and extend the combo? Try to setup a techchase? After an up tilt, would a witch twist lead to a kill or should you settle on a b-air? These questions after getting an opening aren't strictly exclusive to Ultimate, but they aren't as necessary in 4 because combos that led to an up-air at the ceiling killed by themselves.

@@thistamndypo I think Ultimate Bayo has a lot of followup options. She's nuanced because you always have to decide on a different one depending on the situation. Beyond Witch twist, ABK, and dABK, there's f-air (one of her most important combo extenders), up-air, n-air. Heel-slide can catch landings, and witch time's reduced duration forces Bayonetta to choose her combo extremely quickly. Again, depending on the skill of the player, this combo's power varies.

Is Bayo a bad matchup for Kazuya?

as a Bayo/Kazuya dual main id say it’s even or a slight advantage for either character, they both have really good advantage states and can combo each other especially easily, ( Bayo has a tall frame and Kazuya is really heavy and struggles to land ) but id argue Kazuya has a slight advantage due to how light Bayonetta is. Bayo is really good at gaining percent on her opponent but often struggles to kill at high percents, and to make matters worse Kazuya is super heavy, making it even more difficult for Bayo. Another thing to take into account is how light Bayo is. Bayo is as light as Sephiroth but cant out-space her opponents and has to approach. In conclusion, Bayo and Kazuya are combo-food for each-other, but at high percents, Kazuya lives way longer and has a much easier time killing the super-light Bayo than she can kill Kazuya.

@@narisdeuce probably cuz theyre plugging in their controllers into the setup, bc in tourneys theres "stations" where consoles are but everyone has their own personal controller that theyll plug into a station when they have a match at said station, if that makes sense
