I have to agree. Speed run "creators" are different than "speedrunners." Speed run creators are like Alpharad. I love him. I love his content, but he's not a top runner. And I'm over here with multiple top 3 times and a top 4 time, and I have less than 30 followers. And I'm fine with that. I'm not a content creator. I have a full time job, and speedrunning is my hobby. The people who show up to GDQ (and I've done 2 events myself) are not "content creators." Granted some speedrunners became content creators, but that's a bit different,. So yeah. I agree. Big difference between the two. GDQ is to show off the best of the best while raising money. What Ludwig is suggesting is a marathon of content creators attempting speedruns. But ultimately I agree with you. Who fucking cares? It's not like GDQ is going away because of this event. And honestly, using "Speed runner creators" is a great Idea. It will get a ton of attention and probably make a fuck ton of money for charity. So good for him.

twitter is often just ppl being negative about something (in recent years imo), i think the algorithm promotes it or something idk, so people always attack others for likes, that's why i rarely use/interact with timelines etc now, mostly focus on myself/streaming/youtube/coaching where the ppl seem to care about you more (just personal experiences/observations over the years, could be different for others).

As an American, I must agree with Cheese. Too many Americans focus on race, religion, cultural backgrounds, etc. It's honestly very disheartening. Maybe one day, people here will live by one of the two sayings I live by. The biggest problem is they are all English-speaking people. I think the concentration on shallow characteristic is called progressive or woke in the USA. People in other countries have more of a problem to understand people, because it is a different language.I would not care who they look like me or if they are a women if they speak my language, so I am more comfortable with it.

it really was crazy that people got mad that he invited popular creators and runners for a charity event. Like, the point is to get as many eyes as possible to raise money for the charities. People saying it undermines the efforts of stuff like frame fatales makes no sense lol, this is a whole different concept that isnt trying to take down any of these other events/series. Lud also mentioned that the "and more..." was mostly people he didn't personally know that would take a bit more time to officially nail down.

I think the "...and more" is meant to be a stand in for people who don't know whether they can make it yet. The creators that are announced are probably 99% locked in and everyone else who's like "I'm not sure if I can be there yet, I'll keep you updated" isn't listed because their fans would be disappointed if they're advertised and don't show up.

tl;dr gaming has a generalized marginalization problem, NOT the event ~ The "problem" that there aren't any women featured in the event (at least so far) is not a symptom of the event but of the community in general, unfortunately. It's gaming, right? Famously inclusive, nice to and encouraging of women for participation lol. I love watching and commenting on speedrunning and related challenges, but I tend not to speak up at all in certain sub-communities because of the instant harassment that I have gotten before and know I will get. And that's just speaking up, imagine actually making content; putting yourself out there and whatnot. I mean, hell, this goes even further, right? It's not just a women problem, it's a generalized LGBT problem, a generalized non-white problem, a generalized non-global north problem. In fact, a lot of speedrunning revolves around having very expensive setups, which are too much for a lot of people in any 3rd world country. I want to speedrun minecraft, but I need a giga setup for THE WALL (if you know YOU KNOW) and that would cost like 5 months of my entire 3rd world ass salary 💀Streaming as a hobby also requires a lot of money for a nice setup, so making content is even more expensive. Do not worry. If I get a software engineering job working for the Great Nation of the US of A (™ ©) I WILL spend rivers of cash on a setup and grow my community to entire double digits. I will run 50 instances of minecraft and finish the game in two hours. I'll keep on supporting my favorite creators in whichever ways I can, and I definitely will watch this event. Cultural shifts are happening, but they take a while to materialize. It'll get better eventually, no use lashing out on individuals because of something so silly

I think the controversy entirely comes from Lud comparing it to gdq. And I agree with you that he doesn't really know why that comparison is creating controversy. Personally I feel two ways about it. For one I love more eyes on speedrunning, always. But also, I dislike that speedrunning has turned into content purely with little focus on the runs themselves. We'll see how the event goes. I hope there's a good balance of entertaining content and good speedruns

I think part of the problem might be that it's not adressed that there are mostly white guys in the community. Maybe? Like - why is that? Is it harder for everyone else to establish themselves? Is it harder to get into the community? Are there actually people out there trying to establish themselves, but it's just harder to build a fanbase or to be seen as worthy? Women are having a hard time being taken seriously in gaming in general, maybe it's even worse in a community that's so skill based. Who knows. Maybe the people criticising it just want people to speak about it more.

It kinda screams "speedrunners are not good for networking and capital gains, so let's create our own event where we boost our audiences and make everyone think we're doing it for purely altruistic reasons." I can understand the concern if events like this dilute the support for events like GDQ because it relies on content creators being motivated and interested, whereas speedrunners will always be around to make GDQ happen. However, we should at least give them a chance to prove whether there is demand for something like this. There could be enough room for multiple charity speedrun events, but we won't know until it happens. I just hope they genuinely support the speedrun community rather than being purely interested in boosting their own view counts.

I’m late to the party here but... The issue isn’t about diversity. It’s about interest. Speedrunning is just an activity that not that many women are into. I’m sure there are plenty of them in total, but compared to men, it’s a tiny percentage. If you go to a knife show, it’s about 95% men. If you go to a sewing class, it’s about 90% women. Sometimes the actual topic of interest just appeals more to certain demographics than others. That’s okay.

If there aren’t enough prominent women or minority speedrunners who can feasibly contribute to the event then they shouldn’t be there. You can look objectively at each of those people on the graphic and explain why they’re there. Example, big Simp. As you said cheese, one of the best in the world and is pretty popular in the content space. It’s for CHARITY, why should risks be taken if it’s just for the inclusivity? I would say it’s fucked up if say the most popular and #1 runner of a game was a woman or of a minority group and they were left out. I only watch a few speedrunners myself, so maybe there are really talented people that I just haven’t heard of, but even cheese struggled to name people in these groups who are either popular or top runners.

On the topic of female content creators that could be invited to the event, I can really only think of 1 that they could have invited that fits all the requirements you listed, and that would be ParkenHarbour. Very good soulslike speedrunner, specifically Sekiro, I believe she lives with LilAggy or at least did at some point. But Aggy is more mainstream and will have a bigger pull for the soulslike community to come watch the event and donate to charity than Parky would, and thats kind of just the reality of the situation unfortunately. If they're mutually exclusive and only 1 of them can come then its going to just be LilAggy, but if both of them can run, I think Parky would be a phenomenal addition to the roster cause she really is incredible at soulslikes

The whole thing is a balancing act between popularity and skill, you want people at the event who are able to bring viewers and retain those viewers and then you also want people who are at the top level of speedrunning who, maybe aren't as good at those things, but still can do it to an extent. The whole thing for diversity is so pushy and forced, if the community consists of 95% white dudes, expect that to be reflected in the talent. It's like me saying I want an Irish person there, sure it's a minory in the speedrunning scope and it isn't being represented but I literally cannot name one so why should it be forced in if it takes away from both popularity and skill. It is also Luds event, let him invite who tf he wants to be there.

I used to speedrun Sonic games, and to be honest, what made me leave thess communities was because of dramas. I stay far from speedrunning communities and I only follow you, Simply and some Goldeneye 007 guys who used to run the game. This « drama » is of course coming from the place of hell…. Perhaps people complaining are « brats ». I hope so because if not…we have a problem. And it’s a disappointing problem. Speedrunning is about sharing not gatekeeping. Let the guy just do his event. why is anyone mad about this? i get that it's not the same as gdq but it's another event we get to watch for free, and donations go to charity, win win either way, and i miss seeing linkus at gdq, im watching just to see him either way.

Something to actually be upset about would be the date. It's way too soon and partially conflicts with PACE, one of the biggest speedrun events of the year. That said, i agree this is just a silly thing to complain about. We are so obsessed with identity politics we are failing to even consider things like "what is the goal of this event?"

People are mad because they got reaction baited by Ludwig and thought they had a chance to be in a big name event. In addition, some people maybe looked to gain self promo fame from it(?) just like other recent events, people just want to have opinions and be mad about something when its kinda like "who the fuck cares that youre mad?" type things. If nothing else, people feel let down because of a big bait, long story short. theres probably more I missed, but that seems like the main idea to me

32:10 I mean this is just insanely false. You're right when it comes to how white dude are pretty much the only popular ones, but the speedrunning community is very diverse on the ground level. People are sad that there's no way for Ludwig to actually show this off unless he does get some of the less known (but still popular compared to the average streamer) runners that are non-white or somewhere on the gender spectrum that isn't men.
