I think cheating can be forgiven, but the reaction to it determines whether you should be allowed to come back in my opinion. If you come clean and admit to cheating and accept a ban I think you should always be able to get a second chance, even when it was way after the fact. But if you never fully come clean and just keep denying that you cheated, there is no way you should be allowed to stay in the scene, because then it wasn't just a one time mistake or something stupid you did when you were young, you are fully commited to cheating at that point.

I think that cheating a speedrun is super disrespectful to everybody who actually puts the time and effort into actually getting records. I dont think that we should completely demonize and shun them forever but I dont think that we should go "ehhh they feel bad so it's ok now" when they tried to boost their reputation without any consideration of people who actually put effort into their runs
@HoudiniFontmeister

Every year we seem to find newer ways to verify runs and check for cheating. I am not opposed to extra scrutiny like requiring hardware on cam, handcam or even directly recording the tv screen in specific situations. I don’t think it should be the norm but if we were to ever consider allowing a cheater back extremes like these don’t seem so extreme for them. I believe in nuance which the entire gaming community seems to be allergic too though.

@@Nfscarbon07 That's what they thought back then about the people who turned out to be cheaters. Yes it's a lot harder to cheat now when you stream your attempts and with modern cheat detection methods, but it still happens and even big streamers have been tempted into doing it. Cheese seems like a legit person who really loves and respects speedrunning, but the only way we prevent future cheating is by holding everyone to the same high standard

Considering these people were teenagers when any of it happened and show incredible remorse for doing it- it’s pretty disgusting to hold them accountable years later. Like... I get they did something pretty nasty, and some of their apologies were pretty strange. But they were teenagers. They’re weird as hell. I know I was. The idea that something like that- from something being held against me from when I was 15, for example would be used against me when I was 30 as a sign for harassment is bizarre and makes the people doing it absolutely disgusting and in the wrong for even considering 100%. There is no justification. Whatsoever.

If a cheated WR isn't caught and is just far ahead of the skill level of any real player at that time, the only way for other records to happen is by also cheating. CPU = Central processing unit. The main processor of a von neuman device. It reads instructions from memory and executes them in sequence. Has instruction sets optimized for general purpose calculations and program flow and sometimes instructions for specialized purposes such as encryption/decryption (e.g. AES) or vector extentions that allow additions or multiplications on a small number of values in parallel. GPU = Graphics processing unit. The processor on a graphics card or graphics chip. This is optimized and has instruction sets specifically dealing with graphics, altering pixels, handling voxels and executing compiled shaders that apply some effect to geometry and textures or individual pixels (for example cell shading or particle effects such as smoke). Software: A bundle instructions that run on the cpu to fulfill a task, such as the game on a game cartridge. Drivers: Software that directly speaks to specific hardware and acts as a common language, or abstraction layer, between the operating system and the hardware. Sometimes software bypasses the operating system and directly talks to the driver, which is called hardware abstraction layer. For example a hardware clock may have different addresses to hold the time in memory and some sort of protocol to get the time from the memory, such as sequentially reading bytes or asking for each byte individually from it's address. The driver then translates operating system requests for the time to the hardware specific implementation. Firmware: Software that directly runs on the hardware without involving the main CPU. Hardware can have their own microprocessors running little programs from their ROM. An example would be your cellphone modem that runs it's own little program to talk to the cell phone towers and react to incoming calls or receive and decipher GPS signals and store the coordinates and time in it's interal memory until requested by the main CPU. Or the program your printer runs internally. Firmware is not something the user typically interacts with and acts as driver and/or operating system for a device. Operating system: Software that provides system calls and libraries for other software to use, such as common I/O. It also handles messages between software, memory, storage, multi tasking and other such things like resource allocation and memory abstraction. Hardware: The circuits that make it all work. Once the magic smoke escapes they cease functioning.

Firmware is software that is pre-installed by the manufacturers into each of the components of your computer. For example your monitor has firmware, if this was not installed you would have to create software to interact with every bit of your screen to make it actually show images and it would have to be compatible with all other firm and hardware. This is why firmware of every computer has been standardised for every component, with only minor differences depending on manufacturer and product. This is also how your power unit knows where to use the electricity it gets. tl,dr Firmware is why there isnt an electrical fire every time you start your computer.

Hardware = the stuff you can touch, chips and drives and stuff Software = the stuff you cannot touch, the programming the hardware is meant to run. Firmware = the Software that is running right after turning on, meant to load the normal software like the operating system and help it running by providing a somewhat Standardized Interface to the hardware. So Firmware is Software, but it’s the only thing that stays when you turn off the machine and remove all storage and very closely tied to hardware. I think it’s calls ‚firm‘ as in ‚harder than soft but not hard‘.

It's regrettable for the young and foolish that dud cheat , only to regret and wish to come back but without the "once a cheater...." mindset you are just inviting for relapses. Like we see in sports, if you cheat, all respect and trust is gone and without those Speedrunning can't exist. We have to remember, their cheating seriously jeopardises speedrunning in it's entirety. If we can't trust a portion of runs, we lose it all.

Something very valuable that people need to take from this video, and it doesn't just apply to speedrunning, but ALL of the internet. Just because someone may be guilty of something in the past, that doesn't mean they are not able to change, and it certainly doesn't mean they should be harassed or bullied for the rest of their life. People DO change and grow, and learn from their mistakes. A lot of folks on the internet need to understand that and quit jumping on every hate bandwagon that comes along.

The reverse is also true. Just because someone is legitimately skilled at speedrunning a game doesn't mean that they won't cheat at some point. We should keep a careful eye on everyone even those who have earned the respect of the community

I'm also missing a little part of my memory. Late 2015, early 2016 I got harassed, I still know this part. Summer 2016 to late 2017 I don't quite remember. Late summer 2016 I joined a Minecraft server dedicated to horses, I liked it, but having to farm 20k money to get a horse with no stats was horrible, not only was it time-consuming, no one wanted to sell horses with no stats, simply because it is more profitable to sell them at 100k with decent stats after 1 month of training the horse. And there was no other way to get horses from. Half a year passed, I got harassed in late 2017, and a stranger on the server got harassed for having two chunks of big protected land 1 year before two other players claimed huge claims around her. (I told the moderator handling the situation at the time, that it seems unfair to me to remove a native American claim based on the accusations of 2 Europeans (yes, I was this passive-aggressive)) I still know the time of these events, but I'm missing the time between those events for me to accurately put these events in what week it happened. The biggest traitor feeling I had was from the head of the server, she claimed to not be able to see who is where (in a 4-corners event) in what corner, I repeatedly told her to put a block above her because F5 is much better at expanding the FOV than anyone in the event can tell, especially when she can give herself speed effect without particles to expand it even further than my 2017 video can show. As a compromise, she put blocks all around her, but that didn't satisfy my demand of fairness, because she didn't put a block above her obstructing her FOV. She intentionally did that to not let go of her ability to manipulate the game and to refute my claims. (Note: the game is based on 4 colors that get called "at random" by the event organizer where players can choose the color between each time a color gets chosen, players of a chosen color lose) I also got some more videos of that server, better to say a mini-series of a certain player griefing an old monument, that gets its position announced every so often that took me 2 hours to find. (16k blocks of traveling) She didn't get punished, because 1. she had an innocent bystander told that she is trying to remove the grief (that she caused) and to support her, she would have to stop me from doing anything (by standing in me to take my ability to break or move at all), 2. the innocent bystander I got involved tried to support my claim and removed the cobblestone she saw get created by that person, and 3. she claimed the monument first before doing anything, first she broke the wooden stairs up to the monument (that was built to train McMMO Acrobatics) to kill me, then put lava all over the wooden stairs and later with my innocent bystander pour water on it to make it all cobblestone and then pour lava and water all over the rest of the building. (called lava-cast) (I made screenshots of all the signs at the top when she was trying to kill me by breaking blocks under me before she even claimed the land) I guess I have been writing for too long. Grammarly also detects 15 premium problems that I can't fix.

So Firmware. You know how computers have an Operating System (OS) such as Windows 10 that allows you to actually use a computer and use all the different programs and whatnot? Firmware is basically a specialized OS for specialized electronics (often times written or made to only ever be used on single device model) such as a Router/Modem. Generally firmware exists when you have an electronic device that only needs to do a specific job and having a full sized OS on it would be unnecessary or slow.

"Harukaze, AKA Kedama" -...Is this how a SM64 ROM hack, "Star Revenge 4: The Kedama Takeover", got its name, along with recurring series villain Kedowser? These kinds of references aren't unusual for the maker, BroDute... ;D 23:42: That is absolute bullshit. I threw out my N64 a long time ago, and my copy of SM64 a bit before that. Do I *really* have to raid eBay for another? Consoles will not last forever. I write this comment 20 years after Nintendo officially discontinued the N64, and 27 years after it was first sold in the U.S. and Japan. The number of functioning N64's and copies of SM64 continues to decrease as the years go by, and eventually, those still-functioning consoles will die, too...

Gonna be honest here... Cheating is so damn easy. Cheating and not getting caught is what's difficult. There's so many tutorials and tools out there to make it as simple as possible. I started making video game hacks when I was around 14 years old (I'm 29 now). I'd release basic versions for free and sell advanced versions that had work arounds to anti-cheats, spoofed info for server checks, etc. all through out. I was making injectable DLL menu hacks in c++ at 17 for games like Combat Arms and Call of Duty (money's money). Also created my own methods and tools to make things easier. My biggest things to make ended up being bots, very similar to TAS tools. Cheating on console, especially older consoles like n64, frankly wouldn't be that hard either thanks to the existence of game sharks and such. There's tutorials on youtube of how to convert cheats created with popular free tools and convert them to game shark codes. In all honesty, I'd bet there's still tons of cheated runs no one realizes are cheated. More than people think. A little knowledge of reverse engineering, some tech savvy thinking and tutorials from youtube go a very long way
