The same way you might want to work in the music industry if you have perfect pitch, but having perfect pitch isn't part of being a musician

Luffy can see inside people. He's like the most empathetic guy ever. At first it bothered me that he ignored nami's backstory, but then I realized that he already felt what nami was feeling. He didn't need a reason to help her.

He knows already. Nami told him when they first met in Orange Town. She said she’s gonna save 100million berries to buy a town and she told him she hates pirates because they killed someone special to her.

The villagers only pretended to hate Nami so she wouldn't feel bad if she decided to run away and not save them. Genzo explained it in the tangerine orchard scene. Still, I don't think being "hated" by the villagers made things any easier on Nami.

i think what makes Nami's upbringing sadder is that Money was always a problem: got her mother killed, got her locked up under Arlong's law, nearly got her killed trying to steal from pirates. the fact Nami went though all that just to get it stolen from her so Arlong would keep her forever it was just pain after pain growing up till Luffy helped her out. and speaking of Luffy: i always love his "i don't give a shit what happened in the past. your my friend now and those who piss off my friends is on my hit list" attitude. I love One Piece man and it just keeps getting better!

The reason why Nami asking for help hit so hard is because she never does. She could've ask Gin to buy that book for her. She could've ask Nojiko to help gather money. She could've ask the crews to help with Arlong. But she never ask anyone for help, until her plan fall apart.

She did ask for help when Bellemere was about to get shot, and Gen (as well as other people from the village) got severely injured while trying to help her. She was traumatized. She internalized that asking for help would end up in someone getting hurt. That's why she wanted to fight alone, why she didn't want the crew's help, and why her finally asking Luffy for help really is her last resort, she is desperate. And after betraying them, after sending them away time after time, even though he knows nothing, Luffy doesn't hesitate. That means the world to Nami.

Luffy putting his straw hat on Nami's head once she finally asks him for help still hits so hard. That hat is his greatest treasure but by giving it to Nami it just further shows that he treasures his friends more than anything else in the world

Aaaaahhhhh. The first of many many tears to be shed. That moment where this reaction series informs those “in the know” about how MANY future events will received. Hehe. I love this moment. Almost my 50th time watching this, i still tear up.

Technically Arlong didn't break his promise. He says this explicitly in the manga when Nami confronts him: she has to buy the village with 100 million Beli. If she happens to lose the money before he sees it himself, well, them's the breaks. So he intended to have the money confiscated all along before she got to the full amount. There's no way he would've taken installments, either.

There is a small detail, in the manga Bellemere was shot in the head instead of her chest. Take it as a simple trivia, this doesn't affect the plot.

Oda really knowns how to make time and actions feel organic in his paneling, and the anime later off suffers pacing issues as they often struggle not to catch up to the manga. Anime does have some good filler arcs though, and it's always good to see the crew interacting with each other.

About the scene where Nami comes back to the village, to tell them that she joined the crew... Whether or not the people reacted the wrong way, and if they should've been more understanding, bear in mind that it actually accomplished what Nami was aiming for. She knew the people would try to rescue her again, and maybe die in the process. She didn't want that to happen, so she made the deal with Arlong and went back as soon as possible to put on a show for them, so that they'd be disgusted, so that they'd consider her "unworthy" of being rescued. It was painful for her, no doubt, after that she only had Nojiko to rely on. But she did what she thought was the best to keep the villagers safe.

I totally understood what was happening. It's still insane to me that none of them stood up stronger, especially with what happened to Bellemere. But the story wouldn't have worked otherwise. Still one of my favorite episodes and arcs.

It's a long way from here, but in about 400 episodes they will reference this "help me" moment. And both get me every time. I can't say what is the saddest moment since they all hold their own weight and meaning. There's only sadness and catharsis.

And this is a cartoon according to parents who don't realize that "animated" does not mean "for kids", sooooo... This was my childhood show yo. I am kinda glad, as watching things like this gave me a lot of empathy and humanity I think. Taught me to treasure my family right here and now, not only on holidays and stuff. Taught me a lot of good values I want to live by and someday teach my own children. Taught me the concept of death which made loosing relatives easier on me, not easy but easier, and made me accept that death is a thing that will happen to me and everyone I love regardless of anything and that rather then being scared of death I should focus on life.

Every reaction and every watch through so like 10-13 times at least episode 37 gets me and I cry a little. Theres a few other points of One Piece that get me crying every time. Also each time I see Luffy hand her his hat I think of the line "here, take my beer."

I don't think this dude can survive 300 episodes, great reaction btw, this is long end hell of a greatest journey you ever had in anime, a common tips for all the one piece reactor, all conversations, dialogues, even the background details, a tattoo, somehow somewhere in hundreds of episodes later you will surprise how well all that are related. Love your reaction videos! One thing I think you didn't catch (because you were holding your face, lol) was that the villagers were forced to pay the tribute EACH month from there on out. That's why the doctor was going to drive Nami and Nojiko out of the village, because even if the village had ganged up and paid their part, it would've only gotten worse from thereon out. Everyone was scrambling to be able to pay their own share for 8 years. For Belmere, it would've been impossible with the kids around.

While the villagers taking it out on a kid was definitely wrong, most people seem to forget that the villagers themselves aren't exactly in their right mind either. Sucks for Nami, villagers were wrong to take it out on her, but I can't say I can blame them much either for acting out when she suddenly comes in having "joined" their source of distress.
