Bro, Lucky Roux straight up wasted a dude in the middle of the road, in broad daylight, in front of the entire town as witnesses with a bullet through the head like it was nothing.. and the entire Shanks crew didn't even flinch, like that's just what they do. From the start two things were clear, Luffy does not represent the rest of the pirates and we really don't know how Shanks operates but it most likely is brutal.

Dang they can find it serious here. I didn’t get emotional when I first watched one piece til Choppers backstory so that’s after Sanji and Nami. Luffy is the main character, seeing him get that hurt I can see how that would seem more serious.

@@Konekohime22 this is not about “emotional” it’s about how by this point it should be very clear that this show can be dark despite it’s cartoony look at the surface level. Shanks losing an arm and having one of his men shooting someone’s brains out point blank while chowing on some meat, kaya threatening to slit her own throat, zeff eating his own leg, Luffy’s hand being shredded when he punched kraig protected by his spiky armor, nami’s mother being killed in front of her daughters and then nami being kidnapped and forced into child labor by the very same monster that killed her mother, igaram’s supposed death up to this point, etc. The only difference between the examples I stated and Luffy being impaled is that the main character lost a battle-which was also heavily foreshadowed by the way with how luffy never passed his test by beating smoker or how zoro lost to one of the war lords.

Think of Sanji's weakness as more comic book-like. Like the figures of men as superheroes is often overly masculinised as it's a type of medium that lends itself to extreme expressions of everyday things. Like the Hulk who gets stronger the angrier he gets but also less intelligent and feels like he's losing his true self being a sort of extreme example of anger most people feel. With Sanji it's that kryptonite like comic book exageration. There are people who are that psychologically vulnerable to attractive women and it is something that's often used to abuse men. Even the simple act of skin to skin contact can lower some guys guard. If you're interested to see more of this there's a case on youtube of a woman who attempted to hire a hitman on her husband and you can see her attempting to leaverage these sort of emotional tactics. Sanji is an extreme case, but it's also extreme purposefully. One Piece is primarily aimed at a teenage audience; it's important for that audience to see these extreme behaviours, the reaction from the people around them in world and for them themselves to experience that the behaviour hurts his coolness factor.

Luffy getting impaled on Crocodile's hook is the first sign that the Grand Line ain't fucking around. That was the first serious injury that we saw Luffy get, and is a wake up call to Luffy and the viewers that he really was just a big fish in a small pond. If he wants to win now, he's got to actually start using his head and taking fights seriously. That moment *still* gives me chills, though. Crocodile's calm "Who do you think I am?" is so damn menacing. It definitely shot him up to my top 5 favorite One Piece villains. Think I'd put him at #3.

Crocodile impaling Luffy is still my favorite moment in the series, and I’m nearly half way done with it! The cut to silence, the red background, and Crocodile’s menacing voice lines all made me think, even if only for five seconds, that Luffy had legitimately died. Shows don’t normally get me with that, but One Piece managed to!

Fun fact about Sanji: The heart eyes thing he does is reflective, pretty much instinctual; basically, he can't really help it. The fact that he can't hit Bon-chan while in Nami's appearance, also has to do with his ideals and the way he views women. Those are two completely separate parts of him that we learn more about in a much later arc. In this fight both his nature and ideals were a hindrance, but he learned how to overcome/bypass them by becoming faster and thus a better fighter. So he turned a negative to a positive. Good job, Sanji! ❤

Just started watching One Piece bout a month ago, I'v already finished this arc and almost done with the next major one and so far the Alabastar Arc is probably my favorite. The best fight for me was the Sanji vs Mr.2 fight. It was a fun mix of comedy/action and I love the little understanding they both had at the end of each other as respective artists (a world class dancer/performer & world class chef). Really hope we get to see Mr. 2 come back.

I love Sanji, but his thing about women is beyond reasonble levels. I've learned to accept it, but yeah, it will hinder him in fights. He should just never fight women, it's really like some sort of mental block. I still love his fight with Mr 2, it's always great to rewatch. Love all of your reactions and comments (I'm also a huge JoJo fan too)! Seeing Luffy run through with that hook is such a hard hitting image, and the way it's done here in the anime with the colours and everything gives it such impact. The Usopp and Chopper fight is also pretty great, I think, mostly because it shows that Usopp really comes through when it matters, even though it's so hard for him. Imagine being the normal one in a group of monsters like the rest of the Strawhats! Nami also has similar problems, but she never aimed to be a warrior so she doesn't feel it as a failure the same way, I think. Although, honestly, I don't know that I'd call Usopp normal either, with all the damage he can take, lol.

basically in one piece everyone's dream and ideals is pushed to 100% it's the exaggeration of their own self's that makes them who they are in this series, at least it's how i always perceived it, each of our main characters will never break their ideals unless it's something insanely crucial for the story, with sanji it's his never hitting woman and always feeding the hungry, and you'll understand more eventually to why he is how he is, it's sometimes too much but i still think he's a great character if you can get past this .

He was still extremely annoying in the manga, but the anime actually made him 10 times worse. Easily my least favourite SH. Shame, because without his pervy side he would probably be top 5 in the series for me, that's how much he's dragged doown by it.

You can't really blame Luffy too much in his first fight with Crocodile. He got dragged with only his fists and Toto's water to use. Just like with Zoro and Mihawk, it shows the gap between a Rookie pirate and a Pirate with years of experience under their belt. Yes, objects can "eat" Devil Fruits. Lassoo ate the Dog-Dog fruit:Model Daschund. We don't know how that works...yet. Sanji's creed is that he'll never harm a woman. He'll defend himself yeah, but kicking a woman is a huge no-no. It's a bit annoying but one of the major principles of the character. Great reaction though! Love seeing how shocked you got with Luffy's first fight with Croco-boy. I can't wait to see how you feel when this arc ramps up.
