I really like how they differentiate (somewhat) between Starlight's magic and Twilight's magic. With Twilight, ever since becoming an Alicorn, they've only focused on her raw power (see season 4 finale). With Starlight, the focus on her spellweaving (season 5 finale and this episode). It just seems really cool to me.

If you think about it, this episode unwittingly proved how the concept of Friendship can be similar to magic as a dynamic for the show. There are some interesting parallels that can be drawn here from that observation; For example: * Each friendship much like each spell MUST be handled with care, responsibility and special individual attention. * Much like the ponies, each spell is special and unique in their own way. * In overall unison, combining spells is a lot like having multiple friendships in the sense that together they can be greater than the sum of their parts with potential for more. * The improper misuse of friendships and spells both can end up with murky results (Much like a hangover). *When you master spells, you can achieve wonderful results and lasting benefits both for yourself and others around you........much like a solid friendship bond ; unbreakable and unforgettable. Im pretty sure there can be much more profound implications beyond this point but im sure you guys already get the picture. Long story short, the title of this show says it all: Friendship = Magic. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, HASBRO!!!!! ..and you too Luffy.

Given how long it would have taken to start up her own town and build all those buildings with minimal support and workers (especially since she couldn't even start until she invented and mastered her equalization spell), I think it's very likely that Starlight is signficantly older than Twilight, which would explain how she's so skilled with magic, roughly on par with Twilight. Either that, or she spends ALL of her spare time on magic, while Twilight branches out with math, research, reading fiction, history, friends, etc.

Not a clone spell, more like an extension spell. A clone would have its own mind (and we know how that turned out with Pinkie's clones). Starlight's spell allowed her to be in two places at once by having another body. Two bodies, one mind. Notice how the extension was speaking and gesturing exactly the same way as Starlight. So long as one can mentally multitask, this spell can be useful.

1. Yep! I knew beforehand that it would be a Starlight episode, and that's more than enough to hasten me. 4. Two out of two if you count "lotion" as simply the sexual joke answer it was intended to be XD 6. Heck, there are plenty of people out there who could get their rocks off just from watching the episode, because of the simple "mind control" fetish some folks have. The character's situation doesn't have to be related to anything sexual at all, it just turns those people on to see characters being mind controlled, and they draw similar stuff on deviantart. What a time to be alive, right? 7. "DID YOU JUST ASSUME THE WEBSITE I COME FROM? TRIGGERED" 9. 100% success. I'm not outright scared of spiders/bugs, but I still don't want them crawling on me or touching me.

The way the Mane 6 behaved as "Mind Slaves" reminds me of how computers work. They needed steps and "input" in order to "process" their "programming". I took a course on "Information Technology", and this episode brings back memories.

Just to clarify one bit of confusion you had, when Starlight duplicated herself it wasn't really the same as the clones made by the Mirror Pool. Those were actual physical bodies who could act independently. Based on what we saw and how Starlight described the spells, it seemed more that this spell involving combining what was basically a hologram with a speed spell to make it seem like a pony was in two places at once, when in fact the single Starlight was switching back and forth between where she was standing and where the hologram was standing that for all intents and purposes she was in two places at once. According to TV tropes its a power used by certain DC comic characters who are very fast. It looked like it was only good for a very brief period too, hence why she didn't try to use it to do multiple things with the other ponies. Personally I also still see Starlight as "only" Twilight's equal at most when it comes to magic. Its simply that Starlight is willing to try a lot of things that Twilight chooses not to do rather than that she does things Twilight can't do as Starlight is a lot more liberal in her use of magic. There's also the theories that Starlight is older than Twilight, and the fair assumption that Twilight has not reached her full potential (in season 3 advanced unicorn spells Twilight can't yet use are referenced, and at the end of season 4 Twilight says she has only just started to get a handle on her alicorn magic). Lastly, I think its fair to say the huge burst of magic Twilight displayed when she got her cutie mark was a fair bit more extreme in scale than anything Starlight has done on her own (instantly transforming all the ponies around her and aging Spike to a huge size).

I agree with basically everything you just said so I won't wax on for 20 minutes about it. Good react. I found myself laughing along with this harder than I did the episode itself. Just some of your quips or reactions were so funny. As for the review side. Yeah pretty much. Starlight doesn't work the way a lot of Equestrian's do and I like the fact that she is still having major doozies. She's an insanely powerful unicorn who has no social skills beyond manipulation. Twilight's by the book approaches might not cut it. Also thanks for giving me the image of Celestia or Twilight just deploying Starlight against invading armies. They can sit back with tea or popcorn and watch the fireworks. Twilight can learn Celestia's time honoured tradition of... delegation! hehe Anyway, keep up the good work and have a nice day. Edit- I can actually imagine the block levitating to be relaxing for unicorns. Kind of like magical stress balls. That or it's a metaphor for Starlight's sometimes child-like reactions or mannerisms.

I really love Starlight, and she's more relatable for me than Twilight by now, for a similar reason. I had Twilight's thing with OCD, but I have all Starlight's problems as well and very bad at proper socializing. It's sad that there's a big part of the fandom who dislikes or even hates her with wanting her to go away from the show or those who stopped watching the show because of that. =/ Reminds me of Alicorn drama in the past in some way...

Yeah, my first viewing of this episode was kinda shaky(I didn't get what was going on until I watched it again). I sensed a parallel between this episode and "Lesson Zero." Twilight casted a spell on the townsfolk using Smarty Pants to create a friendship problem and solve it but, it backfired on her; then Celestia had to come clean up her mess and give Twilight a lecture. Starlight kinda did the same with the mane 5 and the spell was overwhelming her plan to solve five friendship lessons at the same time; resulting in a problem that Twilight had to fix and give her pupil a lecture.

Hmm, know this is old but, one thing that kind of bugs me cause I see it a lot. Twilight never said that Starlight was more powerful then her, just that she couldn't beat her by raw force, and she couldn't. Not because she couldn't win in a fight, but because the situation was set up that any fight between them would be so large and impressive, that it would also stop RD from doing the Rainboom, which was Starlight's real goal. Also cause Twi kind of sucks at fighting. She's a slugger whose entire move set is "Shoot it in the face with the most powerful magical lazor blasts I have till it stops moving."

i think the reason she was absent during those horrible futures is because she was still in the past at the time of rainbow dash’s first sonic rainboom just like how there wasn’t a duplicate of twilight in those futures. our twilight was outside the time stream therefore not effected by those events. same with starlight. remove the sonic rainboom and just hop back to say the sombra future starlight could then be used as a one pony army. however it was after seeing what a future without twilight and her friends would be she didn’t mean to cause such a future thus redeeming herself. she didn’t understand what an impact the mane 6 had on equestria.

Love the episode and love Starlight. :) Your headcanon about Starlight being autistic is interesting, but I don't really agree with it. Mostly because that would imply she was born the way she is. And I think the show has made it pretty clear that's not the case, but instead she had such bad social experiences when she was younger, that she purposefully started avoiding normal social interaction, thus becoming increasingly scared and bad at it. Being born with social anxiety is something I see more in Fluttershy's character, than Starlight's, and even then I wouldn't say Fluttershy's character is as much autistic as just an introvert. Or perhaps we're all just thinking a bit too deep into the psyche of cute cartoon characters, pondering about their mental health issues and such. Maybe we should just let them be slightly crazy pastel coloured ponies. xD

Nowhere near on the same level as not letting them be colored ponies :/ I was being 100% sincere and explaining why I think Starlight is so relatable for me. It's a permanent headcanon that no one will take from me.

I don't have a problem with your headcanon, and I think it's great when people find characters relatable. I find Starlight relatable on many levels, as well. At the same time, I feel perhaps labelling a cartoon character with an IRL disorder, when the show hasn't implied she has such disorder in any way, is maybe digging a bit too deep into the character's mind, instead of letting her just be a cartoon character (who tend to act in somewhat exaggerated ways anyway). In a weird way, it kind of makes me uncomfortable when people go so scientific on a fictional being. I mean, nobody questions characters like Donald Duck or Homer Simpson like that, despite them probably matching tons of different disorders etc. out there. :P Keep your headcanon, by all means. Just saying I personally don't agree with it, since the show has made Starlight's lore very clear, and autism doesn't really fit into it. :)

I love Starlight and her character development but I kind of wish that they didn't forgive her so easily; still though, a pretty good episode; really enjoyed it as a whole. This is like Lesson Zero 2.0. But, I think I like Lesson Zero more; but I still enjoyed this episode. Also stop saying Chillax! Ponies should not say that word lol. (Well no one should say that word; but especially not ponies). Also I'm loving the fact that they're actually saying spell names; and I believe the spell names were in Latin; I don't know Latin myself, but I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, and they use Latin words for spells, so I was very happy with that. I didn't like that Starlight turned "good" 'cause I thought she was great as a villain. She also didn't earn her forgiveness, which has been annoying me. When I first watched this episode I thought that it showed she was still bad, still trying to control others. She pursues her goals with complete disregard for the wishes of others. But her goal was to be a friend. So how do I square those things? I started thinking that perhaps she has some form of Autism. Apparently you thought the same thing. So she's _not_ "bad" as in evil, she never was. And she can care about others. She just doesn't empathize automatically, like most do. Instead she has to do it consciously and she needs to have it clearly explained. She also can't control her emotions when things doesn't go her way. That and many other traits that you brought up in your tweets makes for a compelling case that she has some form of ASD. With that in mind all past events with her must be seen in this new light. And I think I actually like her now. Not sure, but maybe. She's not bad, she's just a really smart, emotional, idiot. So headcannon that she has some form of Autism: Accepted.

I was playing with that idea also. And I think in season 5 she was a sociopath, whereas in season 6 it seems more like autistic traits. If I have to pick one I'd take the latter. But perhaps she could have been both but changed? Both terms seem like pretty nebulous concepts and perhaps they can't be separated. I think the only thing I can say for sure is that Starlight is Starlight, and she wants to be good, but Starlight has issues.

I feel Starlight is too strong it just feels that she overpowers Twilight most of the time Twilight the Element of Magic it kinda rubs me the wrong way

I actually really like it. Just because Twilight is the element of magic it doesn't mean she has to be the most talented magic user. Think of it like Ronaldo & Messi in football/soccer. One will be better than the other, but they're both amazing legends. Starlight being slightly better at magic doesn't invalidate how awesome Twilight's powers are.

I stand by my earlier opinion that she shouldn't have been made more powerful than she was originally set to be in 'The Cutie Map.' I hate that she was rewritten just so she could stand against Twilight hoof-to-hoof. Having her have more average magic and have to rely on her wits more would be more interesting, in my opinion.

I actually ADORE the fact that Starlight is so strong. In a way, it helps Twilight. Because throughout the series, Twilight was praised as talented at magic, leagues above everyone around her. But wait! STARLIGHT IS MUCH BETTER THAN TWILIGHT EVER WAS. For me, that's absolutely incredible, and it helps to ground Twilight SO much. Brings her a bit further down to earth from being the prophet child.

She wasn't rewritten at all. She literally made a spell that could remove a pony's cutiemark and replace it with an equal sign, something that was frankly unheard of. She demonstrated amazing magical ability since her first appearance. This unicorn was able to render Twilight Sparkle, an alicorn, completely powerless. Everyone suspected she was an insanely powerful unicorn from the beginning.. Seeing her in last season's finale only confirmed once again that she was, indeed, a very powerful unicorn. Nothing about her was rewritten, because to be rewritten would imply that she wasn't this powerful from the start, which she clearly was.

The only ways she is different from a more average Unicorn like Rarity are that her manapool has always been larger, and her cutie mark-related talent is 'to learn and quickly master any magicks about which she hears or sees.' Nopony should be impressed by what Twilight has accomplished alone. If anything, Cadence is far more impressive: she was a Pegasus when she mastered a Love Spell and became an Ascended Alicorn. Let me emphasize this for you: a _Pegasus_ mastered a type of _Unicorn_ (or Alicorn) magic. _And_ 'Three's a Crowd' proves Cadence's magic was roughly equal to Twilight's before 'Twilight's Kingdom (which is important because holding onto all of the Alicorn magic in Equestria _must_ have greatly enlarged Twilight's manapool. It may not be as big as when she was Triboosted, but it is extremely unlikely it reverted to the previous size). windwaker407 You're free to have your own opinion, of course, however the evidence is present to state that Haber rewrote Starlight just so she could stand against Twilight: 1. In 'Boast Busters' Spike and Twilight establish that an average Unicorn can only cast several spells, ever: standard ones like _Object Telekinesis_ and _Illumination_, and a few more dealing directly with their cutie mark-related talent (for example, _Illusion_ and _Material Fusion_ for Rarity). For the sake of argument, I'm willing to call this 5-12 spells for an average Unicorn -- and once a spell slot is occupied it apparently cannot be emptied and replaced. 2. There are spells that are uncommon or more difficult to learn, therefore only a few ponies can use them. _Magic Blast_ might be an example of a common spell, since it's just a concentration of magical energy that's aimed in one direction. _Teleportation_ is an example of a much rarer and more difficulty spell, which we know that Nightmare Moon (and most likely Luna) and Celestia can use. After Twilight learned it from NMM we saw the effort it took, as well as the toll it wrought on her physically. But as she continued to use it, it became easier for her to use (and no, it's no accident I'm using it for my example, since it's the first thing Twilight has Starlight do in this episode, whereas before she only had _Object Teleportation_ (the nature of the target is different, making it a different spell). 3. Unicorns and Alicorns possess limited mana (magical energy) and manapool (a container of a specific size for holding one's mana. It can be expanded though rigorous training). We have seen Celestia, Shining Armour, Cadence, and Twilight become magically exhausted. 4. We also know that pony magic is linked to their cutie marks because they vanished when Tirek siphoned his target, and when the princesses transferred their magic to Twilight. The 'equalized' ponies' magic was also vastly diminished without their marks, and with the suppression 'equal' marks replacing them. Now, these are just basic points to help us understand how Equestrian magic works on a general level. On to the points about Starlight: 1. In 'The Cutie Map,' Starlight avoids using her magic most of the time, relying on her wits and guile to persuade ponies to willingly give up their own cutie marks -- to the point where she attributes the _Mark Removal_ and _Mark Containment_ to a lame-named piece of driftwood. Here she is a far more insidious villain than NMM or Chysalis because she could potentially win without firing a shot, and as evidence of that, none of the villagers looked like they had ever been coerced, or even knew she possessed powerful magic. They thought she was Equal, like them. 2. Said magic, I believe, is most likely related to Starlight's cutie mark, at least for the most part: _Mark Removal_, _Mark Containment_, and _Suppression Mark_ are all extremely potent and unique spells, which she may have learned through the guidance of whatever spirits give out cutie marks. Naturally these are spells which can do great harm in the wrong hooves, and they did because Starlight did not act the way the spirits expected of her. 3. In addition to the above spells, Starlight had the usual _Illumination_, _Object Telekinesis_, and _Magic Blast_ (of which she also has a charged variant, _Spiral Blast_). She further possessed _Object Teleportation_, _Hold ony_, _Circuit Shield_, and an overload setting for the shield. For those not counting at home, we're at 11-12, depending on how you count the charged states, but still within range for an average Unicorn. 4. Of the spells Starlight possessed, she tells us the most about _Circuit Shield_ when she reacts to Twilight's accelerated mastery by saying that it took years for her to master the same spell, meaning it took a great amount of effort and perseverance. 5. Contrast that to the new spells she used in 'The Cutie-Remark.' And how do we know she didn't at least have _Cube Prison_ and _Cube Release_, or perhaps even _Self Telekinesis_? Because, while they would have been very useful to have way back in Ourtown, she did not _use_ them, despite the desperate straits she was in. It is most likely, though impossible to confirm, that she did not use them because she did not yet have them. 6. Even more damning for Starlight, she was somehow able to learn and master Starswirl's time travel spell to the point where she could alter it to let her travel fully through time, and turn it all into a trap for Twilight and Spike, somehow without having to worry about paradoxes or tearing apart the fabric of space and time (which would have made a lot of work for Q and Discord to fix). Yes, Starlight, a Unicorn who had likely put her studies mostly on hold to rule Ourtown, was able to pull off a feat that two Unicorns with their own lifetimes of studies, could not, or were not willing to, do. 7. And then, because the Cutie Map only reacts to the Element Holders, or at least their cutie marks, Starlight must have used magic to essentially hack it, otherwise how could she have used it in her spell? 8. Even in his own episodes, Haber cannot settle for one version of Starlight: In the flashback in 'The Cutie Re-Mark,' she is less powerful than Sunburst and nopony notices her when she does get her cutie mark (otherwise, if she was as powerful as shown later, she'd have been whisked off to Celestia's School too, don't you think?). In 'The Crystalling' Starlight is shown to have more mana, or a larger manapool, than Sunburst, but is slower to recognize what to do with all that power. And she still does not get any recognition from the community when she does get her cutie mark, obviously, or, again, she'd have been sent to Celestia's. Assuming Starlight did not simply forget her old spells and still has them all, this means she has at least 17 spells, with more on the way. This would certainly make her a 'Highest-level Unicorn,' as Trixie would put it. But her earliest appearance would seem to indicate that she _is_ an average Unicorn. Or she was, until Haber rewrote her so he could make the time travel and the magic battle happen. The writers have simply made Starlight _too_ OP and magic-focused, to the point where she has some bad 'Lesson Zero' moments here. Sort of a Twilight Freak-out 2.0. Even Spike notices. This is a shame. I liked her more when she relied on her wits and intelligence. The most we see of that now is when she convinced the bullies not to bother Fluttershy and made Twilight look like the bad guy. Now all she seems concerned about is impressing Twilight -- exactly like Twilight has been with Celestia.
