What is this looking up at the ceiling??? Not necessary . It does not help the performance. It's a bother...

how do you know it doesn't help the performance? Your not playing the piece. If it bothers you, don't look.

We have a real "expert" here who knows what's necessary for a pro pianist to do. Maybe you give him a call and tell him what's all wrong with his playing.. LOL

It helps to look away and up from the keyboard while playing; it helps the pianist concentrate more fully on purely hearing themselves as they are playing and controlling their performance accordingly. It is not possible to do this everywhere throughout any piece because there are always passages that require looking at hands and keyboard for accuracy. But where possible many pianists including great ones look up and away from the keyboard for this reason.
