Lughnasadh Lore (Part 2)

My Oats have dried sufficiently to be able to thresh to them and I prepare to make Oat cakes. Had some trouble with the hulls!!! The recipe for the Oatcakes is below.

Lughnasadh Oatcakes Recipe.
I took the recipe from Delia Smith's Cookbook and slightly adapted it.
12oz Whole Spelt flour
4oz Oat flour - which I made from Oat flakes in a coffee grinder
10z Oat flakes
8oz butter at room temperature
2 tsps baking powder
1tsp salt
1/2 to 1 tsp curry powder
Small drop of milk to bind.
Place the flours into a bowl with the baking powder, salt, curry powder and Oat flakes and mix. Add butter and rub it in until mixture resembles bread crumbs. Add a small amount of milk to bind the mixture together. Roll out on a floured board to about 3mm (1/8 inch) and cut out rounds. Place the biscuits on a greased baking tray and bake at gas mark 4 or 350F (180C) for 15-20 minutes until slightly browned.
You could add grated cheese and less milk for a cheesy oat cake or you could add finely chopped raisins and a tsp of sugar for a sweet oat cake.
If you want to mill oats to make flour, make sure you sow hull-less oats.

That looks like so much fun! I made oat bread this past week. I also made some homemade granola bars to bring camping with us. I took my boys up to my parent's camp. We spent all day either in the woods or down at the beach. I had them work on their plant-identifying skills, and we foraged a bunch of mullen for their cough medicine when school started. We also found a wild rose bush and gathered the peddles and some rose hips. We also found some blackberries and black raspberries. Made a cobbler.

Hi Terri 😊 Youhave to freeze the grain before milling . That’s the only way I know to prevent clogging in the mill . This grain contents to much fat. Happy Lughnasadh to you and Lol

I've cut sugar out of oatmeal and just about everything it started when I was a kid, I know weird but I was reading the package and discovered that it contained sugar already so no extra sugar.

Unfortunately we are tricked into taking more sugar than we need - it is hidden in so many foods. Watch out for any ingredient ending in -ose because that will also be a sugar.

Sorry to hear that Debbie. Was it the heat? They grow wild here in hedges but we are on the west coast. As far as I know they came from South America on the Gulf Stream - not sure if that is a legend as probably someone brought them here. Usually, to propagate, I just stick them in the ground, taking off the bottom leaves. I could send you some cuttings in Autumn if you email me to remind me.xx

IF a child was conceived during that time it would be the mother's child but the father would have to pay maintenance. There was not really any such thing as illegitimate in old Irish society - all children were members of the clan.

Looks wonderful I may try it is there a substitute for curry I am allergic also when you say spell flour is that flour with the intention gluten allergy, life's fun with gluten dairy and egg allergies thanks for sharing.

I use wholegrain Spelt which is low in gluten and some people with gluten intolerance can manage it. If you can't do curry - any spice that you enjoy.

I don't believe you can remove a hull at home so I will have to investigate and chat to some old folk who must have a technique. xx

I'm planning on growing hulless oats next year, and so your experience will help me to know the steps to harvest. Also, I have heard this story of the trial marriage at Lunasa, and I am dubious as to its origin? I suspect it might have originated about a hundred years ago (1920s) when trial marriages were popular in America as well as Europe. What are your thoughts? I appreciated the story of the Pirate Queen who 'dismissed' her husband. Thank you for your lore.

I don't know about trial marriages in US but in old Ireland, in Gaelic society this was definitely the case. There were several forms of marriage depending on how long it lasted, if the people were of equal status and if a wife was a first or second wife. I am referring to times gone by, not recent history. xx

We use very little of an earth friendly commercial liquid. I have some recipes and I have made washing up liquid in the past but they never really cut through grease. Best thing is a trick I learned from an old teacher - wipe the dishes with kitchen paper and then just use boiling water. It works, but then you have paper....Sand or salt is another way to scour pans that is a kind way to do it. xx
