I have the DVD version of the movie and in the bonus content the animators are showing how frustrating drawing Esmerelda was because she had so much going on in her character. Her hair, her outfit, the way she dances, down to the jewels on her dress. Most people forget that older Disney movies were drawn by hand, every frame, every detail. It took a lot of work and time! I can imagine how hard it would be to draw Esmerelda the entire movie!

Making the dress red was a deliberate choice since it's often the color associated with passion, but also in Romani culture, it's the color of bad luck. And a lot of problems start piling up for Esmeralda after she wore that outfit. . .
