I cannot read music. It's something I should learn, although I don't play any musical instruments. I'm tempted to get an inexpensive keyboard, something I could fit here. Anyway, it's lovely seeing the musical arrangements. There's this mesmerizing pattern to it all, the symmetry, the order. More importantly, this is one of my most favorite pieces of music. I understand it is a romanticized score for a sort of dreamlike night in 18th century Madrid, a place I may go to sometime before I die, but a time of which I can never travel, never know. There's something about this music that evokes something more than just this old-time Madrid on a night where soft chatter of voices in the distance can be heard, the marching feet of soldiers are passing, somewhere a wagon cart pulled by a dreary steed grinds its wheels on dusty cobbles. A fountain runs, a soft applause of droplets on tremulous water's surface. Lantern light paints blanched walls and tread-worn black streets yellow-orange in sections spherical and ovoid. A heat is evoked by the soft candlelight blooming as teardrops of a greater fire cast from windows and beneath closed doors. There is something whimsical in it all. Boccherini truly loved this beating heart of Spain, the vivacity of its people. But for me, there is something more to this piece. There is a promise in its opening. A lure to adventure. And for whatever reason at 8:30, whenever I hear this, eyes welling with tears, I feel like I've embarked upon that journey. Though it may be filled with plight, there is a lightness of spirit, an exaltation of being, and the adventure begins with abandon. I love this song. I truly do.
