I get the impression some of the team wanted to lean harder into the scary side with things like the cut ghost scare mechanic. The poisoned state likely being the original effect of the poison mushroom would have potentially added a lot more challenge to portrait ghosts. I also just noticed that the portrification room is meant to look like a kitchen.

Luigi's Mansion is one of those games id love to see earlier builds for along with Sunshine (Which is my most want to see older versions). I think its interesting like Sunshine this game could support two player mode with relative ease and is a remnant of the past. I could imagine it might have been a competitive two player where you are in a room where you suck ghosts up in a certain amount of time unless the main game was a little different back then where Mario was also playable or perhaps even E.Gadd being playable. I think the timer aspect could have been interesting if it was the case where you would have to save Mario in a limit. It could also have been something simple as the time being set on the Gamecube. I do like its loose connection to sunshine where King Boo says he kidnaps Mario for foiling him in the past which could make Sunshine a prequel to Luigi's Mansion

Oh that's a good perspective on Sunshine being a possible prequel. I always throught it migth be a reference to Mario fighting "Big Boo" in Super Mario World and Super Mario 64 before becoming a monarch of ghosts haha

3DS version did bring back cut content, mirrored mode, stereoscopic 3D, and of course multiplayer with Gooigi.

Mirrored mode was a big surprise to me. Bringing back cut content is one thing, but flipping it to throw us old players for a loop is another haha

Oh, I see, it is a regional difference. So, the original has the "hidden mansion" which is like a hard mode and in the PAL release that also includes the mansion being mirrored.

You say it doesn’t make sense for the story to have the second player play as Mario but it also doesn’t make sense for the story to have player 2 be another Luigi lol

I agree and the only reason we have 2 Luigi's here on-screen is cause the multiplayer activates if you have two playable characters on screen at once. Thus duplicating Luigi does that trick, but with the original Mario playable character, that would have done it too before removed.

P2 can be whatever actor from the game you want without dependance on whatever P1 is, Luigi, Mario, a flying pan, etc. excluding obvious issues. There is just no pre-existing code that we know of to change whatever he spawns as. But I doubt story was ever considered at that point, as plenty of the game's core mechanics were not complete enough and don't account for P2's existance properly

When It released It was hated because coming off the previous consoles SNES launch title Mario World N64 launch title Mario 64 GC launch title Mario's dopey brother plays ghost buster? I understand why this turned some fans off who wanted a sequel to Mario 64 and got this game where Luigi can't even Jump I loved this game and still do despite being a Nintendo game It has such an atmosphere sequels failed to capture

Yes, this initial release is darker. I think it simply because there's a mystery that lends the atmosphere of fear. Mario disappears in a haunted house. A fear of the unknown. Now, it's just a series you are familiar with.
