Sometimes I've seen big super-athletes guarding Luka in the paint, and these defenders who can touch the top of the backboard just don't even try. They just stand there with their hands up and you can read their minds thinking "there is nothing I can do, why bother jumping"

In my mind the reason players from FIBA are finding success over here to the degree we are seeing, is because they were actually being guarded. Then they came to the NBA where defense has almost been criminalized by comparison. They went from playing a sport, to playing a game.
@IamSylar1
@IamSylar1 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. I often see or hear arguments that 30+ points games by players are because they play longer in the NBA, but it's not just that. Scoring 30+ in european basketball is rare mostly because of different rules about defense. Defenses are much tougher and it's all about the team. When guys like Luka come to the NBA while previously being guarded by monster defenders they just steamroll most defenses in the NBA and have it way easier to score. FIBA is the actual basketball sport how it should be played with many different tactics in every game by each team while NBA is more a show based on individuality where players have the power and that's the a fact, but NBA has by far the better players.

Also they actually play against adults as kids, doing the grind time back to back games that kids in the US just dont do. They are already in that head space and in that skill tier when they come to the NBA, while college athletes in the US cant compete with the experience.

Steph, I agree wholeheartedly. God I wish Kobe was still with us. I beyond he'd have been on Luka's back about/working with him on becoming a great defender as well. Luka has clearly watched Kobe game film to observe that footwork, b/c I see AMAZING footwork from this kid. Basically, LD is LeBron James with less athletic ability but with a better jump shot, and with even better court vision, making better passes to guys for easier shots (more layups/dunks than 3 pters, whereas LBJ's passes almost always go to guys spotted up for 3), so that the team isn't just relying on good 3 pt shooting. Not saying you can't win by focusing on 3 pt shooting to go w/an LBJ's all-around game...that's been proven @ least 4 times, right? Just saying that it's always preferable to be able to win games in more than just one way (outshooting/outscoring yr opponent). And Luka's assists are just as likely (even MORE likely) to come on dunks & layups as on 3 pointers...what I call "Magic Style." LBJ's assists are in the Steve Nash vein of "drive into the lame & kick out to deep shooters." There's certainly value in that, don't get me wrong. Just a fan of the PG putting teammates on notice, that "IF YOU CUT I will hit you. Maybe in the head if you're not paying attention," where guys are going toward the basket & finishing 💪 just as much as they are stationary & hitting threes. Even someone who is ice-cold can hit a layup or dunk.

Growing up I played basketball and idolised LeBron and Melo. We had players in the NBA that won rings (Beno Udrih, Raso Nesterovic), but they were like depth players and the national team always fell short in the big moments. Fast forward to now and I'm enjoying my favourite sport and was able to watch Slovenia become European champions and I'm able to watch a true Slovenian superstar in the league. All that's left is for Luka to get that ring. Can't wait.

He hasn't played in a long time and is no longer alive. People don't talk about Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Johnny Unitas, Jerry West, etc. It happens in all walks of life. You have people who were grown, some already old when a person was alive or an event happened. Then you have the people who were kids or babies at the time. Then maybe, if the name of the person or event was like larger than life, you have the children and grandchildren of the kids and the babies. The names fade over time. They don't disappear but after a certain period of time other names have already come along and become the newer legend. Once those children and grandchildren who weren't even alive at the time get old enough and especially when they die, the names all fade away a lot too. You'll still see them brought up by the students of history and some analysts/directors/etc will bring them into the conversation but it's inevitable. All names fade. Wilt used to have a whole lot more respect but even then he was a controversial figure to some degree. Believe it or not, Jordan's name will fade away too. Kobe, Shaq, Duncan then LeBron, Curry, Durant. They will all fade eventually. That's just life. As long as America is is still America they won't disappear though. Always going to be students of history. Can't blame the 90s+ generations for not being students. Most people aren't. That's just how it is.

There is something, I don't know what it is entirely, that uses a metric to value performances and rank them. It would take too much effort to look it up, so not going to. I understand that citing is important, so I guess you can take this with a grain of salt. For context of such a metric and why on hearing this it made sense to me, let's go into the possible factors and not actual factors we could use for it. Another reason I think this is interesting is because I saw a many a sports "analyst" who tried to measure with their own logic which game between Luca's and Mitchell's was actually better and I'm not even sure there was a consensus. First off, we used to have, and to a lesser extent still do, a thing for triple doubles. They're fun, but how valuable are they? For one thing, the three components of a triple double aren't equal in value. Shooting volume and efficiency is probably the most important because that's how you track the players direct contribution to winning the game. In other words, high volume of shots with a high shooting % is at the top of player contribution to a game. Assists are second because it also directly contributes to winning a game. Defense, particularly strong defensive plays that prevent the other team from scoring is third on the list. Defensive plays like this should be tracked imo. Defense in general is the hardest thing to account for as it relates to a full game effort, and bad defensive play can balance out the good that they did on that end on the floor at other times. Rebounds and steals are fourth because they don't actually turn into points but give possessions that could turn into points. Steals are more valuable but it's much easier to get rebounds and therefore dominating the boards is usually seen as having a bigger impact. The number of turnovers is also tricky because they can be like having a low shooting % with a high value of shots. Is a 25 pt, 10 assist and 10 rebound game really that great if it's on 8 of 27 shooting with 8 TOs? There are intricacies here, like the value of a self-made play vs an assisted bucket, but this is kind of the baseline. What I'm trying to say is that triple doubles are overestimated. They are still a good thing, but a 30 pt, 11 assist and 9 rebound game is still better than 30, 10 and 10. If you need a further point, Russ averaged a triple double in a season and the accomplishment is all it accomplished. It did not translate into a particularly great year for the Thunder aside from the publicity. Anyhow, Luka's 60, 21 and 10 is of course historic, and will go into the record books for sure, and maybe will never be broken; however, that metric I'm too lazy to look up put that performance as the 6th best of all time, that's fucking great, and Donovan Mitchell's 71 and 11 as the 3rd. I'm only putting this out there because I think it's interesting. Both are great accomplishments, and I don't think either are better than the other. I do think triple doubles are overrated, players only care about them because they are tracked, but 60, 20 and 10!!!! Greatest triple dub of all time.

They never mention his quickness, without that he would not be the player he is.
