It's here, people: Luke Combs' second full-length album. Yep, "What You See Is What You Get" is here to take over country music.
From songs like 'Even Though I'm Leaving' to "Better Together" to 'Does to Me' (a collaboration with Eric Church) this thing is going to be HUGE. And we have a lot to talk about. I tried a new thing with this video, and I did a track-by-track review that starts at 12:46.
Here's my vid about Luke's rise: • How Luke Combs Took Ov...

Alright y'all. This one is a doozy! I give some context for a few minutes, the review starts in earnest at 3:28, then I do a track-by-track overview at 12:46, then I close things out at 19:01. Let's all be thankful for Luke Combs being such a great representation of country music!

i personally like the transition in dear today. when i first listened to the song it caught me off guard. i thought it was just going to be acoustic but then the studio produced sound came on and it seemed so smooth. i think its just because im so used to hearing dear today acoustic or live since its been an unreleased song for a while. all over again is honestly my favorite song on this album. i think it sounds like hurricane or one number away and reminds me of his older music. it also sounds popish so it could appeal to a bigger audience 🤷🏼‍♀️

I'm not salty lmao. I've got a woman and we have two babies together and yes I was married 1 other time. She came from plenty of money and I knew if I left I was leaving with what I came with. But let you tell you on that note money can't buy happiness. I had the best of everything and just wasn't happy with her. I ain't say I real happy now either but maybe a more than I was back then.

I’m just here to say that I’m mad you gave it a 7.9😂 I was also thinking about why I love Luke so much and besides the throwback to 90s country, like you talked about his imagery is so good. I don’t hate the FGLs and the Luke Bryan’s of the world but it really bugs me that a few of their songs sound like a 3rd grader wrote them, Luke’s word play and double meanings make him next level

11 Grady because Luke goes to eleven... Appealing to EVERYONE is an colossally epic endeavor which you've pointed out daftly Congratulations to ALL 17 songs worth of his cowriters, sound engineers and studio musicians for resisting any drastically risky reveals or complexities. This project followed the album's game plan without over embellishing Luke's superior tenor vocals as he is truly capable of operatic crescendo. Personally I can't wait! Magnifico Luca right down to the artwork it's a completely extraordinary accomplishment.

Usually I don’t like music reviews from KZbinrs because they just take it too personal and let it cloud their judgement about what the music is really about. I’m so happy that you take a very objective stance on your reviews, especially on this one. There’s so many different messages he portrays through these songs, and you’re able to describe them the way he would probably want them to be described. Luke’s my favorite country artist. He’s a crowd-pleaser, but not the way Luke Bryan & FGL do it. Luke Combs does it through his talent and hard work. Thank you so much for your honest opinion, Grady. Looking forward to more reviews from you.

Can't even begin to tell you how much I love Does To Me. It's really hard to explain to people why I love country music and this song just captures it perfectly. While it's not country but the song Swing Life Away but Rise Against is another song which message really captures the feeling of what I find in county music and it's the feeling of being content and finding your own happiness in a less than perfect life. Luke Combs really is one of the best things to happen to country in a while and I really can't wait to hear more from him.

One of a kind review on a one of a kind album! Grady, you do a great job breaking down not just the album but everything else that is a part of it. Persona, context, tone, etc. Great job and please keep it up! On a side note, recently the Spotify algorithm suggested an album entitled Southern Gothic by Dan Tyminski (from Alison Krauss and union Station). I thought it was gonna be a bluegrass album but it instead was a compelling pop country album (I know crazy right?) the lyrics are deep, evocative and brooding in a way that really fit the tone with the arrangements imo. Most of the songs on the album strike a phenomanal balance between Country, pop, Bluegrass, and R&B although some veer off into filler material. Although a couple years old, I really would like to hear your opinion on it. Specifically I recommend the Title track (Southern, Gothic), perfect Poison, the devil is downtown, haunted heart, and Hollow hallelujah. Cheers!

I love All Over Again. Lyrically, it’s a pretty great pop country song. But, I had a feeling you wouldn’t like it. I like Luke’s pop country sound over most of the people in country that try to do it. It’s a hit for me. And as a woman planning her wedding Better Together will be played at my wedding right alongside Lover by Taylor Swift. Does To Me is pretty good. It took a few listens for me to really take it in though. Nothing Like You is great but I feel like I’ve heard the same message a million other times in country music over the past few years. All in all, I really liked hearing your take on this.

Does anyone else have this new thing happen to them when they listen to a song and start to critique and analyze it, but the voice in your head is Grady’s? Just me? Ok. Also, love this album & was excited to hear you rave about Does To Me because any song with The Chief is my favorite song!

The duet with B&D is undeniably one of the strongest songs on this collection and IMHO, will most certainly get noms from ACM / CMA for collaboration of the year ..

Excellent review. The album is indeed a step up from the debut. In fact, we can say that Luke has three LP's, each better than the other. The deluxe edition of his debut included some of his best songs, e.g., "She Got the Best of Me," "Must've Never Met You," "Beautiful Crazy," and "Houston, We Got a Problem." How those songs were not included on the original release can only be, I assume, the label being stupid. With this (technically) sophomore release, we have Luke doing what he wants, which was my sense of the deluxe edition of his debut. As a result, we are the beneficiaries. As a very mild criticism of your review, I think "Angels Workin' Overtime" should get a little more love. It's got a John Anderson feel that I love, in those rare moments that John Anderson did a fun cut (e.g., "Black Sheep").

To me what made this album so great was how I could relate to a lot of what he was saying, especially on does to me and better together. I think that this album is definitely gonna win album of the year, and I cannot wait to see what he is gonna do to try and top it

I feel like Luke Combs is just that perfect blend of modern country radio and the classic country I tend to appreciate more. One of the very few artists I can get my girlfriend or non-country fans to enjoy listening to. This paired with Heartache Medication was brought out some great music

I love the fact that you said you felt a “live like you were dying” vibe from even though I’m leaving, it’s funny because that’s exactly what I said about dear today based on. The fact hes basically saying “hey go out and live your life to the fullest and don’t waste time”

Loved reasons I like the production and the message of how like everything has a reason and then also how I've got my own reasons. Loved every little bit helps awesome breakup song. After listening does to me with Eric church I want eric church to to make a new album. When I listened to all over again I knew grady wouldn't like it😂😂 the immediate percussion, very Nashville.

Maybe I'm just a dumb music consumer, but I loved "moon over Mexico" and "new everyday". The thing about music is every song ever made has a fan base, no matter how many people belittle it.

I had to come back to this, 6 months on this album has only got better. I genuinely believe there is not a bad not even an average song on it. Even though All over again which is more pop holds its own after multiple listens. Judging from his quarantine concert releases on Instagram album 3 will take him to 90s Garth levels

Love this review, but my only deviations would be on the songs “New Every Day” and “Nothin On You”. I think I may have just identified with NED better, because the details spoke to me about all the things he’s learning about himself because of this unwanted breakup. I liked that aspect for that song. “Nothing on You” reminds me of “Eyes on You” by Chase Rice. It’s telling a girl about all these beautiful sights but in the end the girl is more beautiful. I really like the first verse to “Nothing on You” that beginning, “I’m on a red eye, rolling down a runway” will always get caught in my head, but the chorus was very reminiscent of the Chase Rice song. Just my thoughts-really enjoyed the video though!

One of the first albums in a long, long time (of any genre) that has multiple songs that made me tear up on first listen. Dear Today, Even Though I’m Leavin’ and Better Together are all just perfection. WYSIWYG, Every Little Bit Helps and 1, 2 Many are gonna be so much fun live though!
