Vader is impressed with his son , like all fathers are impressed with there sons accomplishments. First the Death star , then the dual in cloud city and now out manuavering him . Vader seems to glow in his son growth . Something else Vader was impressed with Luke in Endor he admired how he rebuilt his light saber. Father's always take pride in their son.

In their first combat engagement, Luke was engaged in a torpedo run that had to be made and successfully completed, even if it meant his death moments after firing the torpedoes. Luke was not in the middle of a dogfight with Vader. Darth Vader was working to catch up with him and get close enough to start firing. That first engagement, a straight line chase, by no means was a test of piloting skill for either of them.

Let's be honest, Vader isn't trying to kill Luke, he is testing him and purposely causing Luke to prove how well can grow as a Force user. All this because he's a good dad.

No, it's because he knows Palpatine wants to replace him with his son as the apprentice. At the end of ROTJ, Yoda, Ben and Palpatine all want the same thing -- Vader dead. All for different reasons, yes, but the same result Vader, otoh, wants to turn Luke and kill Palpatine so they can "...rule the galaxy together as father and son." Luke is the only one working for a completely different outcome. Luke didn't surrender himself to Vader to take on the emperor, he came solely to try and save his dad. Luke says as much. "...that's why you won't turn me over to the emperor now." Oooops.

Worst Dad in the galaxy with his "works too much to spend time with the kids" excuse lol. The Emperor has him working OT so he's missed out on 20+ years of being a father. Now Vader wants to test out if his son has the same throwing arm he does that runs in the family without getting too close emotionally.

Not necessarily. Luke flies more frequently than Vader. Anakin was a jedi knight and did stuff for the Jedi order. His combat pilot experience is mostly from the clone Wars. Luke was piloting an armed T-16 skyhopper before he was even 18 if I recall correctly. After becoming Darth Vader, Vader did not have as many combat flights as during the clone Wars. Luke's primary duties with the Rebel Alliance was being a pilot. Basically, Anakin's time was spread over many different roles (general, pilot, diplomat, commando leader, teacher, etc) as was Darth Vader (enforcer, Supreme commander, executioner, diplomat, etc) while Luke's primary role was just being a combat pilot, with some commando action and maybe some diplomacy on the side. Not saying Luke has more experience or that your overall conclusion is wrong, but that just because Vader is older does not automatically mean he actually has more combat flying experience. Another thing to consider is the ships they flew as well as the fleet doctrine of the faction they belonged to has an impact on their flight hours. Until Vader had his tie advanced, nearly all the fighters he flew had no hyperdrive and required either a hyperdrive docking ring or had to be carried by a capital ship. After joining the Rebel Alliance, Luke's primary fighter was the x-wing, which had a built in hyperdrive. At the same time, the Rebel Alliance relied heavily on snub fighters making hit and run attacks and rarely engaged in major fleet actions. Simply going from one planet to another usually had Luke fly an x-wing instead of being transported by a capital ship. Even non-combat flight hours play a role in experience. With all those factors, it is theoretically possible for Luke to have more flight hours, at least over a given length of time (we will call it flight hours per year). Vader probably has more flight hours total, but that is not an absolute certainty, and Luke definitely has had more flight time over the past three years than Vader has had. Another thing to take into account: even during the height of the clone wars, Anakin Skywalker would most likely have less flight hours per year due to the ships and tactics used (as well as his other duties) than Luke has during his time with the Rebel Alliance.

As others have said, Vader was likely impressed with his son's piloting skill. However, I would still give Vader the better pilot ranking- he was clearly not trying to kill his son- possibly not even trying to shoot him down so much as force him down. Luke used his environment and performed a decent maneuver, but as we saw from the Trench Run, if Vader was behind him for that length of time (sans meatshields) and had wanted Luke dead, he'd be dead. (Heck, the "under" attack vector clearly had Luke in his sights, so...) Not that Luke's a bad pilot; just that Vader has a few decades of experience on him. (Also, if Luke was gonna attack, he really should've went for Proton Torpedoes during a barrage of laser fire; draw focus with the lasers, and the PTs should get close enough their blasts do some serious work.)

Luke did something like this in the old Marvel Star Wars comic book series. The Falcon was trying to escape from Vader's advanced fighter. Luke hit the the waste tank release with the water tanks too. This frozen in Vader's path. Vader saw this and stated "Well done, young Skywalker" and crash into this.

At first Vader was fully dedicated to destroying Luke to him he was another nat that needed swatting. But once the emperor confirmed this is no doubt the offspring of anakin Skywalker, he changed. Now it was more about okay well let's see how good he really is and tested him but held back at the same time. As Vader expressed to Luke together we can overthrow the emperor and rule as father and son. His intentions were fully to make his son his apprentice and tested him every chance he got but was astonished at the level of control power and technique Luke possessed at the time with little to no training.

While technically it's good to see that they're finally treating Luke closer to his established character. I think they did so incorrectly even here. I mean come on no one's a better pilot then Anakin Skywalker and or Vader. So while Luke was finally getting some respect. They denigrate Vader. Like just because one has the upper hand doesn't mean they should obliterate the other. At no point should Luke have been able to encounter the possibility of defeating Vader. Luke at this point would have only ever been able to escape at best. Certainly not destroy. Even if it is true that in that scenario he would not choose to kill Vader.

I think vader is the better pilot but at the same the ships during the clones wars were way more manuverable than the ships after ABY were a bit slow and clunky. It may have been the special effects in prequels being better than the orignal trilogy but that just my opinion.

I personally think that they are equally matched. Luke was caught off guard at the beginning however because of his past experiences he was able to adapt quickly. However Luke also temporally disabled Vader, mind you Vader has done that to Luke to. In the end they are equal to each other with the only advantage is experience and even then that doesn’t always cut it.

Neither is better then the other from everything I've seen they both are equally skilled as pilot which one wins when they fight comes down to luck an other factors that you can't predict. But having the skill needed when those openings happen is crucial an they both have that in spades.
