I think that the compass being a guide to portals makes a lot of sense. It may be how Sidious found the temple on Lothal in the first place, and it looks like, based on his appears at a portal in WBW he found another portal other than the one on Lothal. So it would make a lot of sense that Luke found that compass in Sidious's stash. Maybe like Sidious that Luke couldn't access the WBW like Ezra did, but may have used it as a window to speak to other's in other time periods. Just a thought.

I dont know...maybe its possible he got access tot he WBW. Maybe it was first there that he saw Bens future, but he didn't believe it until he tried reading Bens mind. Maybe thats why he wanted to read Bens mind...to confirm if the WBW visions or future he saw was true.

My personal theory is that when he let "ben play around with the compass," it was actually what led Ben to come across Snoke trapped in the world between worlds, who is really minister hydan possessed by the Son. Ben freed him and that's where the horrors begin.

That's an interesting theory regarding the compass' connection to the world between worlds, which is one of my favorite Rebels episodes. With what we know at this point, it's hard to speculate if Luke or Ben had knowledge of this place. My theory is that the compass did more than to just map out hyperspace lanes as stated in the TLJ Visual Dictionary, but it served as a celestial reference to locate places that have a strong Force energy, including locating hidden, secret, or lost Jedi temples. My guess is that Luke used the compass to find Ahch-To. Question for you Mike: Do you think the world between worlds will surface in Episode IX, and that it could be an intriguing place for Rey to meet Luke and receive the guidance she failed to get from Luke in TLJ?

Force Within TV Mark Hamill would be perfect for a separate animated series consisting of 10-12 episodes per season. From the point the war ended on Jakku forward. As long as such series is not mixed with the REBELS continuation including Ezra, Sabine, Ahsoka and Hera.

1.)The Compass of Pillio looks as if it fits within the circle atop Ahsoka’s staff in the ultimate episode of Star Wars Rebels. 2.)Luke would have needed the compass to locate the first Jedi temple, as well as any other Force-related hyperspace points and trajectories. 3.)This idea is akin to how the British used a radio wave to guide their bomber groups to specific map points within mainland Europe during World War II.

It's possible that the compass could help someone find a portal to the world between worlds in addition to its ability to plot hyperspace coordinates. Luke likely still had it as a keepsake and didn't do anything with it. Though I do like the idea that Luke even if he finds a portal can't access it either because he doesn't know how or doesn't have that particular gift. I would say the former that the gift to open the portals is extremely rare explaining Palpatine's intense interest in Ezra especially after he showed he had the ability to open and close the portals.

Could be that like the Kiber crystal, the compass was just something Luke held onto, even though he had no use for it. I mean, Accam's Razor. Which is more likely? That the Compass is a link to the WBW, or that it is something used to plot hyperspace Coordinates, which Luke used to get here and then held onto for sentiment?

I think the compass may have been a guide to portals leading to the world between worlds but somehow Ren, Luke and the emperor were prevented from working it. Another thought of mine is maybe it leads to some extensive and largely unknown knowledge or connections of the Force. Either way I think Luke had some clue to the compass's purpose and was trying to figure it out possibly hoping to find a way to fix something that went wrong.

Could it be that Ezra found his way to Luke, told him about the world between worlds. The compass is probably a portal that leads to it. Luke was trying to get into the world between worlds to turn back time and prevent himself from confronting Ben Solo in his hut. He was, i think, about to do it. But Rey came along.

He might have discovered it by following the journey and story of Ahsoka and Sabine or Ezra and Thrawn. Perhaps as he ventured further into the unknown regions, he encountered Snoke as Snoke headed towards the wider galaxy. With Snoke's rise to power being, by his own addition, an unlikely affair, perhaps he saw the Imperial Remnant as more than just tools, but as a security force that could ferry him too the known galaxy. I have an idea that he might have been fleeing from something, perhaps whatever injured him, perhaps what taught him the secrets of the darkside, and perhaps whatever dark entity called too Palpatine. Linking back to the World Between Worlds, what if by accessing it, in the same capacity that Yoda could, Luke saw something that exposed Snoke's true intentions, or even the entity in the Unknown Regions. IDK, this is my 1AM theory-crafting talking XD

The compass isn't tied to the World Between Worlds, specifically. I think that it's attuned to specific places that are heavily influenced by the Force. Let's face it, a lodestone attuned to hyperspace vectors would be useless for accessing the World Between Worlds, but it would definitely be useful for pointing to the right paths (pardon the pun) to find very important places to the Jedi, such as worlds with Temples that had portals, large kyber crystal deposits, or even a lost planet called Ach-to where the first Jedi Temple was built. Luke more than likely used the compass for the latter purpose only. Quite frankly, I don't think Luke had the knowledge to access the World Between Worlds. Yoda and Obi-wan trained him to be a weapon. His purpose was to get the minimum amount of training in a minimum amount of time as possible in order to face and destroy both Vader and Palpatine (surviving those encounters was not a requirement), so any other training and knowledge would have been a waste of time. Everything he would have learnt after that, he would have learnt on his own. Ahsoka and Ezra, if they ever met him (and it's hard to imagine that they wouldn't have) would have helped him how they could, but I don't think they would have gone through much effort to teach him about accessing the World Between Worlds. And I'm not convinced that Luke would have allowed them to teach him that, as I don't think he would have trusted himself with that kind of knowledge. It's fascinating to think that when it comes to sheer raw power, no one would be able to come close to Luke, but Ahsoka and Ezra could arguably be considered more powerful Jedi thanks to their knowledge of the Force outside of combat (Ahsoka especially). Something I hadn't thought of until now, when you mentioned that the compass was sitting on Ben's nightstand, is that the compass could have been the catalyst for everything that went wrong with Luke's Jedi Temple. Perhaps Ben was close to figuring out where those worlds with portals to the World Between Worlds are located. And if this is so, perhaps this is why Snoke corrupted Ben, turning him into Kylo, in the first place.

Ok the compass is used for luke to complete his training he can jump in and out to certain points in time when jedi were still alive and have them train like yoda or young obi won or even qui gon jin b4 he dies and thats how qui gon learnd of the force ghost powers and how he know the true evil his father represented and the flaws of the light side as well and gave it to kylo to do the same thing cause i truly think luke wanted him as a equal to him and not a student or he gave it to him cause he got frustrated like kanan did with ezra and just thought it be a short cut as it was for him

I think it is possible to be connected but I have a funny feeling Luke was saving the. Compact for someone else to figure out on there own time during the adventure they go through he might not have visited the world between worlds but he might know about it had seen the future and maybe Rey or even one of her students will get there what do you think?

Most of the references I find including Slashfilm.com indicate this compass was the clue that led Luke to the First Jedi Temple on Ahch-To. Which would explain why he has it in his hut in The Last Jedi. After the tragic events of Ben Solo going Dark Side, becoming Kylo Ren, and destroying the Jedi Training center Luke had established; Luke went off to find the First Jedi Temple. (See Han Solo's scene talking about Luke in The Force Awakens.) The flashback scenes could indicate that Luke had yet to understand this secret of the compass and Ben Solo was studying it as Luke's apprentice. Since I'm not a huge fan of the World Between Worlds idea, the compass having the secret hyperspace route to Ahch-To is enough for me. However, it could be speculated that the secret of the compass was that it could be used to find ALL Jedi Temples in existence. This would explain why the Emperor might have it in his collection on Pillio. And, since it was at the Lothal temple that Ezra found a portal, it is possible all temples possessed portals that could access the WBW. So, Mike, your theory does have merit in my mind.

It's possible that Luke could have made it into the empire world between worlds, but the compass alone would not be enough to find a way in. (Otherwise the emperor would have gotten in himself and it's safe to say everything would have gone to hell in a hand basket if he had) I think the compass may just point to planets strong with the force and any temples that may be located on them. Some of these temples may also surge as gateways to the World between worlds but like on Lothal getting into it to the extent Ezra did would be tricky. We do know that many of the weird spaces and visions from wishing the Lothal temple were actually the World between worlds bleeding into and overlapping with the space wishing the temple and it's what made communication with Yoda possible. At first I thought it was purely a display of Yoda's ability with the force but I now understand it to be possible due to the temple. "Master your here?" "Or here you are" Yoda's abilities just meant that two way communication was possible. Anyway Luke may easily have made such contact with the World between worlds without knowing, especially if the knowledge of such a place was not in the Jedi texts he found. Unless of course he has a long overdue conversation with some members of the ghost crew but I'm not sure how much help that will be as I'm not convinced Ezra even told them he found Ahsoka in there. I suppose Ezra or Ahsoka could tell him themselves at some point as well but it'll be a long wait for us to see it if that ever does occur. Not sure he'd go looking for it if he did know about it anyway. Basically he probably will take some shallow dips into the world between worlds but is highly unlikely to go through a portal proper.

Maybe it's both! But, what it really does is...help a powerful enough Jedi/Jedi Master to find worlds where there are special Jedi temples that have certain areas that the World between Worlds can be accessed! Which is why it is attuned to hyperspace lanes... shortcuts to those specific worlds & temples! Which is also why he was at the 1st temple! Much like Yoda, he was waiting to die, & become one with the Force! However, Rey shows up...& we all know what happens after that! Also much like Obi-Wan, finally finding the strength within to stand for something meaningful, before the end! Not only that, but the fact that he wasn't even really there, & still showing Ben that he still has much to learn, about the Force! But, as for Ben borrowing the compass, I believe that it was more about trusting Ben with it! Master & student thing! But, since Luke kept Ben from keeping it/leaving with it, to make sure that Ben couldn't find him with the compass! Much less his new evil master! But, not just that, but to protect all the old Jedi temples from the SithLord, & his apprentice, & the New Order! But, did Yoda just destroy the 1 temple, or all of them? May the Force be with you, always! & may it continue to blow your mind!

One more thing...there could be more than 1 compass, throughout the 'Star Wars' universe! Every Jedi temple could have 2 or more such compasses in it's storages somewhere! Considering they were probably made long before the modern Jedi temples, as we've come to know them! There most likely was 1 on the bridge of the Jedi cruiser 'Chu'Unthor'! Luke could have found the ship's compass in his travels, & that's the one that is in his possession!

Someone who knew how to properly use it could 'divine' near exact locations of a single temple on an entire planet! It's controls could have been built with a Jedi/Force users in mind(inside the compass)!
