Cairo, Egypt ➖ When I saw a local boy setting up shop and selling some corn on the streets of Cairo, I knew I needed to give it a taste test. I approached him and asked for one, he then communicated with some of his friends to give the price to me in English, around $0.40.
As per normal, he fired up the charcoal and on the cob went, to roast away to crisp darkness. He saw the camera and with hand gestures suggested he held it while I became the corn man. Of course, I accepted and was the newest corn man in time.
All was going well and the corn was finished when I gave it a bite and was pleased with my cooking skills. I gave him around $1 for the service, with the language barrier I thought he was giving it back to me. But after suggesting with hand signals and tone, it was clear he wanted more. I pulled out my wallet.. (stupid idea) and let him grab whatever he wanted. A couple moments later I was $5 poorer and amused at what just happened.

One advice for you... Always keep with u small bills of money and don't show the sellers how much money you have in ur wallet... Recently, visited Egypt and I honestly didn’t have a good experience. Majority of people were hostile and just wanted to scam us. It was extremely draining to be honest. Certain times it even got a bit sketchy. Overall, there were some nice people but unfortunately the experience as a whole was not the greatest 😒

I stayed in Egypt for 6 months, hooked up with groups of other travellers in hostels. Lots of fun but can be perilous. Unfortunately, as far as I could see not such a fun place for solo western women. Also, some people will try to scam you. But, was the best time of my life and would definitely go back. Just be a little wise in certain situations. Remember, don't put temptation in front of people's eyes, eg don't flash your wallet.

Don't go to local areas without someone Egyptian with you, because you'll end up being scammed or even stolen like what happened there. Believe me, If you have someone to trust from the country that you're going to, you'll be safe from that kind of scamming, especially Egypt, because no one gonna understand the Egyptian unless he's Egyptian too.

this is Egypt, but the question is why do big powers(Ameirca,european countries, Russia,China) support these regimes with weapons.. people are dying and getting arrested for just expressing their opinion. I’m sorry Luke for what happened to you! I’m Egyptian and I wanna to address something. The corn-man on the first place wanted the only 5-pounds, then you were generous by offering him an extra 5-pounds as a tip. So he seemed to tell you: “No, I don’t want a tip”. This is the way you understood 😂 He wasn’t doing so, he just wanted a new 5-pound bill instead of the old 5-pound bill. So when you put it back to your wallet he thought that you won’t give him a tip, thus the greedy corn man wanted to take it back, and once you opened your wallet to him he found it a chance to rob you. I’m sorry for what happened to you! And please tell me the location you were shooting to inform the police about this accident. Wish you come again!

The same thing happened to us in turkey. I guess scammers are everywhere and we should be extra vigilant. Our’s happened in the most weirdest and unexpected way. We gave money to the taxi driver and he would drop the money that we gave and lied saying we were giving counterfeit notes. He charged us so much more.

Travel tip for everyone - never let anyone else touch your money. I know it sounds dumb but in a lot of places crooks will use slight of hand to take a note, they'll then show you a smaller note and claim they took out the smaller one and even give you change.

@@JC-ce8uw everyone learns from experience. I got ripped off by a taxi driver in Istanbul to learn my lesson. I now use Uber or other local apps wherever possible. In terms of prices I find it's useful to put the number in a calculator or a phone. Or have a notepad and pen to write on. That way there is no confusion. Most of these people are opportunists - just act confident, take your time, don't let anyone rush you. They're much less likely to take an opportunity if you look confident, but them even the most seasoned traveller like Luke can get stung.

Whenever you take a taxi from or to the airport, there is usually a standard fee set by either the airport transportation. But if you walk outside to the street off the airport property and call a taxi ot flag one down , it usually is a lot cheaper.

I had a guy try that in a Turkish Market when my wife (stupidly ) opened her purse with a wad of lire showing as she was paying the guy .He tried to get his hand in her purse , and he did not realise i was with her ( I look Turkish ) I said get your hands away ( quite aggressively) or i call Jandarma ( police ) . You really have to watch these guys . ( PS ) the police can ban them from the market( for a set time ) if tourists complain.

What's bother me every time I visit Egypt and I am Egyptian but left Egypt long time ago. I can't protect my privacy. I want to walk without anyone disturbing me everywhere. Very annoying. I understand everyone wants to make money but they need to educate anyone in the tourist areas how to deal with tourists and provide them with the education and tools to support them as well.

The corn guy was saying to you in Arabic that he wants a different money because the one you gave him and got it back to your wallet thinking he doesn't need it, was a "bad quality" paper and he wanted the same amount of money but another "good quality" one, you don't speak arabic so you did not understand. He ended up telling you (alright give me this) when he took the 50 and that's' pretty much it. My opinion is that he thought you don't want to pay so he decided to take even more money from you. That's not allowed especially that he's Muslim, and i hope he repents and give away this money to the poor if he can't find you to give it back to you. What happened was that He was trying to tell you that the other 5 you gave him wasn't good cause it was either torn or Old so he wanted another one but cause of the language barrier he kept saying another one in Arabic but the hand gesture was showing more. Eventually he tricked you when he took that 50 as he was actually asking for 100 in Arabic again and i think he was going to give you a change but yet you waved to him to keep the 5 so it was a bit of miscommunication and rip off. The 2 men that came out from the school or the facility were trying to tell the boy to tell you not to take a Video of him but the boy had something in mind. The boy was trying to tell you to take a video of Only the Corn but not of him and that's when he started the count down as he thought maybe that the Camera wasn't on yet. The Money notes has either The Royal Scribe Statue inside the Museum / Mohamed Ali Mosque inside the Citadel / The Sphinx and mostly Old and Ancient Egyptian land marks and on the 1 EGP pound coin that's king TUT. SO i guess you haven't been to any of those.. :( The Taxi Driver was trying to tell you that the Hotel Price is 150 and that's what the Hotel would have charged you. Such a Hotel won't leave the Dessert if it's not fresh daily and not in all the rooms but the one you were upgraded to.

In Islam, stealing is not only a sin, but the thief must actually give the same amount of money, the same exact car or even a candy bar back to the same person, even if he needs to travel to another country to give it back to him. If he stole something edible or another thing that can not be given back then a different thing will replace the stolen thing. Religion plays the first role in this situation as Egypt is a Muslim country, and the guy was Muslim, therefor he shouldn't have done that, and that is why i stated the religion in my previous comment as to highlight the fact that it is forbidden whether someone has morals or not, differing from the other religions, were moral might come first in a person's daily life, while Muslims live their daily life according to their religion's rules, the Quran and the Hadeeth (islamic stories) And sorry for the late reply, i just logged in to my KZbin account and saw it.
