Growing up I listened to Rachmaninoff's music all the time. I became a tad obsessed so I started exploring his contemporaries, including lesser-known musicians whom time has treated less favourably. In the process I came across a handful of hidden gems - largely unknown pieces of music that are nonetheless beautiful.
Since this year will mark Rachmaninoff's 150th birthday, my personal celebration is to release an album of these discoveries accompanied by a monthly film here on KZbin. I've called it "Forgotten Melodies" - a nod to the three eponymous collections by his friend Nikolai Medtner - and the full album will launch on his birthday, April 1st.
This Nocturne by Lyapunov (1859-1924) is the opening track and, though it was likely influenced by Chopin (in particular Op. 27/2) and Liszt (S.172/3), there is something new and original here. I hope you find the melody as enchanting as I do.
I'll be releasing films from the album at the end of each month, alongside many original compositions 🥰
Audio mixed and mastered by Nadezhda Podedinova - I can't recommend her highly enough!
