This is how I made a transmission fluid level indicator for my Cavalier. I still don't know why GM didn't put a dipstick on these cars.

what's to love about it ? I have a 99 and I do like it, but only because it was actually ours since 99 and I waited years to get a license and drive it. but honestly it is the most unpleasant car to drive in the world... forget handling, even in normal city driving the steering wheel feel so bad and you slide a lot on the chair with every slight maneuver. ABS is terrible and what not.

I think they make alot different to make hook to machine my 2000 was full when idling n running out but if wasn't running it would not be at the hole level it would be way over by couple to three quarts.n my 2004 isn't full yet when idling n running out still needs couple quarts.They have fancy gauges ECT you use in trans diagnosis lol. They do have did stick you can buy which is best. My cars don't like anything but Valvoline trans fluid n oil. Only way shifts correctly n runs correctly. Regular Valvoline is getting scarce.

WARNING: BE AWARE that to properly check the transmission fluid level for the 3 speed w/overdrive 2.4L trans. you MUST follow the manual: 1. Have the engine idling, shift through all the gears then place into park and leave idling. 2. Find and unbolt the rearward 11mm bolt that is on the underside of the transmission side, across from the engine oil bolt(Not the same size bolt found at the front of the car transmission which is a trans. pump pressure gauge test port that will spray fluid out at high pressure volume if removed while idling). 3. If some fluid drips out the hole, the trans is full. Otherwise use a long funnel to add fluid to the top of the transmission screw off plastic cap until fluid starts dripping out of the hole. 4. Replace bolt into hole. 5. Turn off the engine. Note: The engine must be idling the whole time the full level bolt is removed because this keeps the transmission pump sucking up some of the fluid in the pan, into the transmission, otherwise if the bolt is removed when the engine is turned off, fluid will come out of the hole making it appear there is too much fluid in the transmission when this may not be the case at all. I had to research this info to get it right and wanted to pass it along because these videos can be misleading or incomplete. I'm an Owner of a '97 Chevy z24 2.4L 3 speed w/overdrive automatic. Paying it forward, take care.

Are you positive the fluid should be checked with the engine running? You are correct about having to warm the transmission up and cycling through the gears but my manual doesn't state that the vehicle should be running when you test the fluid. It doesn't mention at all whether it should be running or not

Or you could just pull out the plug and add oil at the red cap hole until oil runs out of the lower plug. Replace cap and plug.
@lukeFugate4 жыл бұрын
That is the way the factory recommends you do it. The car is supposed to be perfectly level too. The only problem with that is after filling it up and replacing the plug you can't check it without taking the plug out and adding fluid again. This is very inconvenient and time consuming compared to just pulling a dipstick or looking at the clear tube. I keep a check on oil levels and transmission fluid levels on all my vehicles at least twice a week.
@All2Skitzd10 жыл бұрын
IMPORTANT The car is supposed to be running and warmed up when you check it, transmission fluid has to be at 104F. Any service manual says don't turn the car off and to shift through all the gears holding it there for 3 seconds each then ending back in park. Also I don't think that fuel filter is going to stop water in the fuel or transmission.
@patricksartdesigns7 жыл бұрын
You're right the filter won't do that. And why he didn't put the plug in the hose and clamp it in place makes no sense to me. And the way he has it routed is stupid, it's on the motor mount, and the wheel well that's not going to hold well with zip ties
@jnunez12033 жыл бұрын
That looks ugly besides and not safe and locked.
@fowpoweredcycles361210 жыл бұрын
Excellent idea to use a 3/8" pipe section to replace the check plug. My only recommendation would be to add a valve somewhere to the system. Under normal conditions the transmission is sealed at that plug, leaving it vented all the time is asking for trouble...even with a fuel filter. With a valve and you can open it to check levels then close it back up to go hard. Thanks for the ideas friend :)

Snazzy idea but here’s my question you added you dip stick Line on where it used to be a plug. Now why did you leave it open breatheable? Shouldn’t you’ve plug it sense it was plugged before?
@lukeFugate6 жыл бұрын
The transmission is vented anyway through the cap on top. It has been working for a long time now, so I don't think it is a problem. I have thought that maybe a better design might be a straight pipe leading to a 90 and then another pipe going up under the hood. Then you could get a dipstick that would reach to the bottom and it would seal everything up. It could then be checked by just pulling out the dipstick under the hood.

If you change your fluid and filter at proper intervals you are all set. The idea of leaving hoses hanging and attached to moving suspension or motor mounts is foolish. Road debris can rip that right off exposing the transmission to contaminants.

it's not as close as it looks in the video, but it is close enough to get warm. It's been like that for almost a year and hasn't presented a problem. I suppose you could make a heat shield for it by slipping a piece of electrical flex tubing over the hose for added protection.

I appreciate good "imagineering" but I think you've outsmarted yourself. There is a good reason that no car that I know of runs fluid lines exposed to the outer diameter of the wheel wells. This is great example of opportunity for unexpected consequences, that being road debris flying up and compromising the integrity of you AT fluid level line. I have a Cavalier with AT but I wouldn't do this.
@lukeFugate6 жыл бұрын
True. I can see how that could happen. It hasn't happened yet, but that don't mean it won't. It would be better with hard lines ran and supported to a dipstick tube.

Yeah, I've heard that before. I checked it both ways tough, and there's very little, if any difference in level when running or not. With the tube visible you can check it either way. You are right though, to check it according to GM's procedure it should be running.

VERY GOOD video for those of us who have never had this issue before. HOWEVER, wouldn't it be possible to use the 1/8" nipple taht you screwed into the trans, then connect a 90 degree union pointing upwards to the nipple, then attach a dipstick tube to the now-upward pointing 90 degree union and make yourself your very own dipstick? Or is there something in the way that would prevent that from happening? I only ask because my girlfriend seems to have a trans issue, and before I decide to dive into it, I was wondering if there was a way to do that. So far, she doesn't put out enough to make it worth my while. But if she comes around, I might. and for those of you who ask, WTF was GM thinking? Well, I'll tell you, it was a cost issue. If they could save 50 friggin cents on something, they WOULD. These cars were built when the 50 pound heads at the big 3 were starting to think, "What if we built a car that would destroy itself after 10 years? THEN we can FORCE people to continue buying new cars..." So they decided that if they can remove those items which allow us to take care of the car, it will perpetuate the cars' ultimate demise and make us buy a new one. My 25 year old BMW has 'sealed' U joints...you can't repair them, you can only replace the driveshaft. Automatic cars nowadays STILL don't have dipstick tubes. Even some new cars don't have OIL dipstick tubes. Did you know that both Mercedes and BMW use this procedure to check oil...1)drain oil into a container. 2)measure that oil. 3)refill engine WITH THE REMOVED oil and add however much new oil you need. THEY RE-USE YOUR OIL!
@lukeFugate9 жыл бұрын
+theshookinator You should be able to do that. It wouldn't be able to come straight up but you could use two 90s and bring it forward to come up by the radiator. very good idea.
@dabcorn9 жыл бұрын
+theshookinator - make sure that you have some 'vibration dampener' - high pressure/temp/ hose - attached just before or after the nipple or you may find the metal parts cracking/ splitting/ joint leaks....
@simply_christina877 жыл бұрын
I do not get this. I understand a little bit but a lot I do not. Like 9n the tube just because the fluid 8s there how does that still indicate that there is enough fluid. 8 do not know 8f you understand what I am trying to ask but maybe you will.
@lukeFugate7 жыл бұрын
When the level of fluid in the transmission rises to above the bottom of the hole it will push fluid into the tube. If the level of fluid drops the fluid will drain back into the transmission until the level of the hole. That is why I marked the tube at the full mark because only a small amount of fluid can drain back in. there will always be a little bit of fluid in the tube. You need to make sure it has enough fluid to raise the level to the mark on the tube. Hope that helps you.

Why don't you just get a filler cap like the PS cap that has a measuring indicator or make something for it? I get your point about the importance of it to make sure its not burnt ...if you follow the manufacturers suggested trans fluid change its usually around 70-90 thousand for Most GM cars. If you have a leak you'd notice it on the ground. really not worth all of the effort for hillbilly engineering. New cars don't have dipsticks anymore and transmission is sealed which requires you to go to the dealer for fluid change.
@lukeFugate8 жыл бұрын
The power steering cap idea wouldn't work because there is no way to get directly through the transmission to the pan. Also you don't always see fluid on the ground when it is leaking. I had a Dodge, with a dipstick(if not I would have ruined the transmission because I wouldn't have noticed the level dropping)that had a leak from the cooling lines and it would only leak on the highway and by the time I got from the highway to home the dripping had stopped so there were no drops or puddles to be seen. You can also change fluid and filter yourself by dropping the pan even on the newer cars. I'm actually very disappointed with modern GM vehicles. Build quality has dropped to pitiful levels.
