Betawi cuisine is one of my most favourite dishes of Indonesia. But I won't say it underrated, I think it's more because it's too common so not many people of Jakarta sell it for others. Like in my neighborhood, lots of Betawi people live there, they used to cook Betawi dishes for their family, but the only way I can eat Betawi cuisine is when they have event like wedding. 😅
@junirenjana4 жыл бұрын
@@harumicomments it's too common only for Jakartans, Betawi cuisine aside from nasi uduk and perhaps soto betawi is practically non-existent in other parts of the country. Unlike, say, Minang or Sundanese cuisines.
@harumicomments4 жыл бұрын
@@junirenjana Actually, I think only Minang, Javanese, Sundanese, Makassar and Manado food which are spread around Indonesia. I mean, even an authentic Balinese food (which is the most popular island in Indonesia) is difficult to get in Jakarta. 😅

What an interesting cuisine! There were some similarities to Mexico in this. Jícama (heecama) grows all over Mexico and is very popular there and in the US. Also the way the sambal was made was very similar to the way Mexicans make salsas using a molcajete, a type of mortar and pestle made of volcanic rock. Glad the both of you are safe and well. Taiwan has been a real example of how to deal with this pandemic. I only wish we could have done the same here in The States. Take care!!

@scott i just googled and surprised molcajete actually really look like sambal we made here in indonesia, but a bit different with the ingredient😁 We used a lot of shallot, bird eye's chillies and shrimp paste.. If there's indonesian restaurant near you live, you should try it.. And yes..because Mexico is a tropical country like indonesia, that' why we both have quite similar fruits and cuisine.. 🙆

I kinda miss my hometown, like the people and the foods. So, I searched in KZbin and that’s how I found your channel. I really enjoyed when you two went to some villages in Indonesia, stayed with the locals, watching the process of how they cook their meals , watching them made me miss my country more! And that made me can’t stop watching your videos in Indonesia. I’ve been living in Japan for about seven years and I don’t go back to Indonesia very often. I kinda forgot how soto betawi, the sour soup, and every thing you had in this video tastes. We can’t find jackfruit in Japan and I miss those times where I could find and eat them so easily. Anyway, I really enjoyed this and thank you for sharing!

The lime that you squeezed ok the juice is called Kalamansi lime. In my country, Malaysia. The Malay name of the lime is Kasturi. Among all version of Soto found throughout Indonesia, Soto Betawi is by far the best tasting because the dish is cooked with coconut milk & the meat in the broth is beef, literally every part of the cow.including the tongue, which I consider is the best tasting meat of the cow.

Jícama (hee' - key - ma, stress on the first syllable) is native to Mexico. It reminds me of a huge water chestnut, assuming you've tasted fresh water chestnuts, which have a mild sweetness and a big, delicate crunch. When I lived in New York City, it was available if you looked. I live in Thailand now and I haven't seen it around. The dish with it looks like an interesting dish. Perhaps I need to get to Indonesia. Sumatra looked especially interesting. I enjoy the coffee from there. Don't they grow tobacco for cigars, as well?
