Luke it appears you've got yourself confused between SSH keys and GPG keys. The keypair used to log into your server and copied to your server with ssh-copy-id is an SSH keypair. Your GPG key can be used to encrypt files on your computer or for email (or for many other things). But they aren't used for SSH. The command people should run before ssh-copy-id is ssh-keygen -t ed25519 OR ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096 (never use dsa or ecdsa, dsa is insecure and ecdsa is standardised by the NSA and probably insecure)

I just opened a support ticket with Vultr because it's also not working for me. I'm wondering if you had the same problem as me... Thunderbird won't connect. So I checked systemd on the server to find that dovecot failed to start because UFW blocked it. So I set UFW to allow ports 993 & 587 but still no go. Did that happen to you too?
@HushedDeath2 жыл бұрын
@@DennisChaves That didn't happen with my case here, thankfully. The main issue I remember was the block they have administratively in Vultr's infrastructure for outbound mail. They may ask you a few details about what you're planning to do with the server and how much traffic you expect [they asked me], so just be prepared for that. :)

Comments from following this tutorial on May 22, 2022 (05/22/2022) using a vultr server: Some ufw commands were needed to open up the ports and get everything working. If you're having trouble accessing your website (17:51) or logging in with thunderbird (33:36), try running the following commands: access website: ufw allow 'Nginx Full' - this opens up ports 80 and 443 connect email client: ufw allow SMTP - this opens up port 25 (outgoing mail from server)*** ufw allow IMAPS - this opens up port 993 (retrieve mail from server) ufw allow "Mail submission" - this opens up port 587 (submit mail from client to be sent by server) *** This has been mentioned in other comments, but outgoing emails will not work until vultr unblocks port 25. You'll need to submit a support ticket to get this done.

This is awesome, but what holds me back from making my own mail server is the maintenance. I can follow this tutorial well enough, but when something goes wrong a couple years down the road, I'll be high and dry with no email. I'd really appreciate videos about what maintaining a mail server is like and how to diagnose the problem when something goes wrong. Also, a question: both the Vultr account and the certbot wizard require an email address. I would want to use my personal mail server as my primary (and, if possible, only) email, so can I use it for Vultr, Epik, and certbot? It seems like there might be a problem with using an email account as the credential for the hosting service which is hosting that same email account. If not, it seems like I need a second email account. What would be the best option for this?

Just a little note that if you can't view your Nginx site, it's likely because ports 80 and 443 are closed on your VPS' firewall. You might also have the same issue with the mail server.

For anyone trying to do that, make sure your VPS provider doesn't block outgoing traffic on port 25, or you'll only be able to receive emails

Hi Luke I love your videos! They always are straightforward & easy to follow. I always use them as a reference when I forget something so thank you! :) Also I wanted to ask if you could make a video on Conky or another widget program for Arch. Thank you again for all the great linux videos & remember to stay awesome!

Vultr actually blocks port 25 by default, you might want to use sendgrid or a similar service to relay your emails to them via port 587, will also minimize risk of landing in a spam folder

As my mail client on Android I prefer FairMail over K-9. It's also open source with a more modern look and has active development.
