What I see a lot of people not picking up is the foreshadowing in the first 30sec. The father, talking about his daughter to be sacrificed could be the SAME verbiage Geralt would use to describe Ciri. As those adjectives also apply to her. Could replace that fathers voice with Geralt and work just as well. Wonderful foreshadowing of the Ciri reveal.

I remember years ago everyone was excited for the possibility of Ciri being the next main character. Now this stupid culture war demands that ANYTHING with a female lead be hated from the moment it's revealed. Thank God it's not as bad as the Ghost of Yotei reception has been. These people are even lying about production, saying that no one who worked on The Witcher 3 is still there which is a straight up lie. Not only are plenty of high ranking Witcher 3 devs still there, some have even been there since Witcher 2, but those who did leave recently left to work at a sister studio to work on The Witcher 1 remake. So yeah, these people see a female lead even in a series where that makes sense and STILL delude themselves into thinking it's doomed and will even lie about production to make these points seem valid. I hate this culture war and I'm desperate for it to end.

@kityhawk2000 my theory is that she was able to survive the Trial of the Grasses because of her Elder blood but the mutation weakened her powers. So she can still use them but she's not unbelievably broken, this could even justify having a skill tree for the Elder blood powers, part of the plot could involve her needing to reawaken her abilities to their full strength.

Be for real, she is like the second most important character in the books, the whole plot revolves around her, she has always strived to be a Witcher, led a life surrounded by other Witchers, including her adoptive father and has the means to overcome the Trials of Grasses.

It's stated that women didn't survive, but the whole situation around Witcher creation is left open. People are treating the information we have on Witcher creation as gospel, when the very novels shroud them in mystery and uncertainty. Women may not have survived before, but it might not impossible.

@@LightningRaven42 My view on this is that witchers are primarily men because they are genetically, on average, physically stronger than women, giving them a better chance of surviving the Trial of the Grasses. This doesn’t mean it would be impossible to create a female witcher, but from a practical perspective, it wouldn't make much sense to try it with candidates from a physically weaker group when the process already has an extremely high mortality rate so most of the females will die. Also being a witcher isn't some cool thing that anyone should desire. It's a shitty life. So in conclusion even though it's dumb idea to create female witchers it doesn't mean there can't be at least few so I wouldn't mind some ordinary female witcher if they would write the backstory and lore around it well. But making Ciri a witcher is just dumb either way because she's also adult already. And I just wanted some new and fresh character so we can move as far away as possible from Geralt, Yennefer, Ciri and other characters we already know. That would expand the lore way more if it would be set in different location and time period (I was hoping for Kovir or Nilfgaard). I want to see something new that we haven't seen before. I don't want The Witcher to become another Star Wars which can't break away from the Skywalker family. I would be even fine with female witcher but why Ciri? That's the worst decision they could pick.

Personally I thought they'd go with Ciri but I understand their reasoning because this goes exactly with my ending of The Witcher 3 but doesn't for other people. The problem then if not Ciri, who? You'd almost certainly end up with an MGS2 situation. I've said it before but it's like trying to replace Kratos or 47 or Lara Croft or something. So the logical or safe conclusion if you're not going to use Ciri would be a character creator. Not a voiceless, vacuous character of a Bethesda game but we've seen CDPR put character creators in their games with Cyberpunk. So it's not really a stretch. The irony I suppose is that most people probably would have just made Ciri anyway

Okey so to answer some doubts that I see in comments. Firstly Ciri being Witcher, I believe CDP has a lot of space to answer this question, there are a lot of options. For example she is child of Elder Blood so that would mean she is stronger than most people not only cause of the powers the blood gives but also physically. So that blood could be the reason she survived trial of grasses with help from sorceresses. What I mean by that is if u recall quest with Uma(Ugliest Man Alive) Yen was able to help him survive using magic. This could possibly with combination of elder blood be explanation of how she survived. Furthermore I believe that if Cirilla is the only exeception being the only witcheress in the lore it will be completely okey with the LORE. If they explain it right. Next would be her powers, so with that after fighting White Frost it is possible she lost her powers or maybe that her powers were weakened that much she isn’t able to use them anymore. Next thing I would like to point out is kinda awesome. We know that Zirael was trained by Yenefer and other sorceresses in arcanes of magic and what she did with that water is exactly that she, as u can recall from books she took powers from the source which in this case is water. That would mean she probably will be able to use more advanced magic than most witchers. Awesome. Basically what I wanted to show u guys is that Reds have a lot of space and possibilities to explain it in Lore friendly way so I would be calm and just wait for further clues we will get. Now to be frank at first when I watched this I was like no no no no no no! I watched it on my phone and was weirded out by how she looks something was wrong I think it might be connected to jaw and mouth but the more I watch it especially after watching it on pc I’m just getting more excited. I believed before that it would be cool to play like a new Witcher(in creation similar to V so set character but still somewhat customizable) but now I think it was the right call with Cirilla. We will be able to see more people that we grew to love it will be smoother creating new histories so on and so forth. If u guys don’t agree or wanna ask I would love to have a conversation.

its 100% pre-rendered cinematic, witcher games always first release a cinematic, its tradition. and of course, the game engine responsible for the cinematic is going to have the same type of visual artifacts. its not like they use different code to render the same stuff. So instead of having 6mil vertices, they will have about 12k. They aren't limited by performance in the cinematic, so more objects, further draw distances, more volumetric fog, higher poly models (closer to the sculpted models.), and better accurate lighting. Once in game, they will turn down all these options, and it will not look better or the same. its just not how these things work. But don't get me wrong, graphics have greatly improved over time. Nevertheless, it ain't gonna look like a pre-rendered cinematic as of right now.

The witcher 3 was more than just a game it was a story with very interesting character and universe. Ciri was the only reasonable choice if they wanted to go on with a story based game and not just a bunch of quests that any player made character could do. It's very difficult to create a good strong story if you have to deal with a lot of player choices. In BG3 what's interesting is the character interaction and the gameplay but the main story is quite weak.

Pre-rendered means it doesn’t run in real-time and is essentially pre-calculated in a video format. So, it could mean anything from a possible target for the game's visuals to just a beautiful cinematic. Though, I feel that if they wanted it to be the latter, they could have simply made a CGI trailer like they did for the previous game. So, I assume if they made it in-engine, they actually wanted to showcase the possible graphical fidelity of the game, which recently went into full production, and possibly highlight some work-in-progress assets they have, like Ciri's model, etc.

My issue with this trailer is the fact thats it been released at all. The game just went into full production. They did the same thing with CP. Considering how they lied and deceived and cut features. Its obvious they didnt learn anything. Why would they start a hype train this early? They want to erase their intentional deception of CP so that they can do it again because lets face it in the end it sort of worked our for them. Someone at CDPR farts and all the access media site are writing articles for days so Witcher will be in the news cycle consistently to achieve their erasure goal. This should have released next year when the development has been further down and features have been set etc. But they are not to be trusted this game will go the same route as CP unfortunately. And everyone will act like its a huge surprise that they got lied to.

They did the same shite with Cyberpunk 2077 - "it's going to be similar gameplay to all our other most popular games, but even better" then we got FPS only which excluded a bunch of the player base, and the graphics were NOTHING like the apparently "ingame" cinematics they showed. If Ciri did become a full Witcher, this game probably takes place decades after W3. The trials slow the aging process considerably. Geralt, for example, was around 100 in W3 and looked to be about 40. Ciri looks to have aged more than a decade here, so maybe W4 is set thirty or thirty five years after the previous game? It's hard to say, of course. But that seems like a reasonable guess.

She has no affiliation to any school aside from the Wolf that we know of obviously. but even then Ciri has never just expressed a true desire to become a true Witcher and go through the mutations like them, she just wanted to be free and roam like geralt and being a Witcher was just a natural choice considering she was raised by one. It still seems odd that she'd choose to undergoe mutations when her powers alone maker more powerful than any Witcher that has ever existed. Still interested to see how CDPR handles it though.

If people go back and watch the “Killing monsters” trailer from the Witcher 3. Geralt looks different compared to in the game. He is more grizzled and a bit more ugly. This is the same in this trailer with Ciri. The last comment from Ciri is a direct nod to that trailer. As for Ciri being a Witcher, She wears a different medallion in this cutscene and could have gone and found a different school with a deeper knowledge of the mutations. Which could have allowed Ciri to take the final trial of grasses.

I connect a lot more with these established characters than when I build my own character. No one remembers these shallow characters we make. Geralt and Ciri will forever be remembered.

​@@SteveHJones95Skeptical because CDPR built one of the best, most distinct, games ever made? Sure... they lied - or at least manipulated people - about its quality on the consoles, especially. But the core elements of why 2077 is so good were there on day1. I don't really care if they even manage to repeat history and release it broken - because I'm not daft enough to buy these kinds of games if they're buggy and months away from necessary fixes. This is just a cinematic, a mood setter. Pretty much just an official reveal of a title. What promises is a cinematic like this making? That Ciri's in it? That NPCs will talk and walk? That there'll be nights and monsters featured... ? You get my point... Someone can be excited by a Witcher 4 reveal, and still be wary of launch states. It's easy to do both.

7:41 It says on the steam news page that "The trailer was produced in cooperation with Platige Image." so it's not made by CDPR like with the Witcher 3 cinematics. And the fact that in the beginning of the trailer it says that its pre-rendered means that its made in ue5 just not in real time, so I would assume that in-game it wouldn't look as good as this, but then again it might.

Personally for the witcher games and the reason I love them so much is because of the story, i just feel with making your own character the story really does get hit hard and other aspects of the game need to boost it up, but for me having Ciri as the playable character makes 100% sense and the right thing for the series, pretty much everyone knew that was the way it was going so just ridiculous people are kicking off about, anyone who played TW3 and isnt a moron, im sure will love playing as her and seeing what the story entails

I don't have a problem with Ciri being the protagonist of the game, I do however have a problem with her being an actual Witcher. As we know from the books and Witcher 3 Ciri never went through the Trial of the Grasses.

Developers confirmed that she went through the trial after Witcher 3, so we'll probably see how it happened. Also, this wouldn't be the first time, CDPR retconned the lore. Geralt would never be able to beat Detlaff in a fight either for example.

The idea that a woman can’t be a Witcher because people in the world once thought it was impossible is so stupid. It doesn’t even need a magic/elderblood explanation, it can literally just be as simple as doctors in the world did more research and we now know better how to perform medical procedures on female biology. So much of our own failed medical history as it pertains to women just can be summed up with “all our research was done on men and we just assumed that we could use the same treatment for women…we were wrong”

There's no lore saying no woman witchers, no lore saying a woman cannot take trail of grass, There's a lot of Americans who played/seen Witcher 3 maybe read a book, translated for them specifically (dumbed down) by their own people that now are specialist on foreign book lore... it's so common with you guys it's silly and frankly boring. Yeah you can really pick who's read a fan Wiki as opposed to the actual official Wiki. Since the TTRPG dropped AGES ago, "she-Witchers" ARE canon. They're taboo and vanishingly rare, but two schools produced female witchers... Cat and Wyvern. This is not to say I like the idea that they've completely ignored about half the player bases choice to NOT make her a Witcher, but they *didn't* break canon to do it. If that even matters since CDPR AND the original author already admitted to breaking canon with Witcher 3!

Been following this game since 2010 since Witcher 1 its always been Geralt he is the Witcher. If they want a new character why not just Eskel then or a new character origin. They're just making up a NEW lore at this point this feels like The Of Crap Part 2.

@@seeker6755All three games are made up new Lore. In the books, Geralt and Yennefer are dead. The end. Sapkowski has committed to no reversal of that, in the books. CDPR made up a way for them to come back for games. Geralt is the POV character of the books and the games. But the saga has always been about Ciri, her development, and the reaction of the world to her power and potential. There is a reason that the first full novel opens in Ciri's perspective. Even in the Witcher 3, it's Ciri that saves the world. As Geralt your job is to find her and be a good father, by showing her that you have faith in her. You get the good ending, by believing in her and stepping aside. CDPR gave us three whole games expanding the universe from Geralt's perspective, and then told us his story is over. He's retired in Toussaint with Yennefer.

The cinematic looked so good but there was something weird in their "realism". Also, Ciri's face looked unreal to me with the scar. Nonetheless, it has a pretty big task carrying the saga forward besides the books but as of now, this new trailer brought a vibe back that I haven't seen since the best scenes of Henry as the Witcher fighting monsters and talking to the people.

Ciri becomes a Witcher ending in Witcher 3: Ecstatic Ciri is a Witcher in the Witcher 4: No, my lore, it cannot be! With time comes improvements to technology, I'd reckon the same can be said for magic. Ciri is the GOAT and there is no reason her training and the Elder Blood would not have been able to help her withstand the mutations of the Trial, if she even needed to go through the Trial of the Grasses as we knew it. Like I said, time can improve the alchemy required. This is also beyond the scope of the books which means they aren't breaking anything.

The problem with the “lore discrepancies” is that there is discrepancies pre-baked into the world of the witcher… like the trial stripping the emotions out of Witchers, it’s said over and over but it’s also displayed over and over that the witchers we meet act like normal people who experienced brutal training and traumatic childhoods It’s why the witcher world feels so immersive and believable despite having actual fantastical things in it… townsfolk mistake monsters for gods and witchers for monsters etc
