Every time a big studio says "player freedom," we almost always get a big empty world, and a largely linear story with small choices throughout that only slightly changes the ending. One ending is the good ending. The other one is the bad ending, and last just makes you feel like shit.

@@pixels_per_minute Except Naughty Dog isn’t Ubisoft. I don’t mind them giving no / nominal changes in game endings or story impact, but if they can incorporate in game freedom in exploration and gameplay that would be brilliant. Think the semi open world section of TLOU2 but where you have a lot of options in how to traverse or tackle situations / combat and on a bigger scale.

As someone whose favorite genre is the book-like experiences we used to get in the 2000s (especially Bioware before they completely pivoted their style), I now wince at the buzzword "player freedom" for exactly those reasons. Some games are better big. But the focused narrative experience has been almost completely neglected in AAA spaces for the last few decades.
@psd.3144
@psd.3144 Ай бұрын
@@amolbhatia1449 has naughty dog done anything to deserve that kind of wishful thinking? at least ubisoft used to be fairly innovative and unafraid to make changes or improve functionality. giving us the same old gameplay with some choices sprinkled in doesnt really sound very fun at all, and naughty dog hasnt made a meaningful change to their combat and exploration formulas since uncharted came out nearly 20 years ago...
@amolbhatia1449
@amolbhatia1449 Ай бұрын
@ Ubisoft’s innovation largely revolves around running a business and trying to find the next big thing to milk the consumer for. Naughty Dog’s focus is on excellence and because they deliver they don’t necessarily need to chase trends (like copying Witcher which Ubisoft have been doing for a decade now). Specifically on Naughty Dog, they essentially have been the studio that created the benchmark for the industry for narrative experiences with Uncharted and then totally set a new bar with TLOU. So one aspect of the modern gaming experience owes a lot to them. When it comes to gameplay and exploration, I’d say that this was probably what held back their earlier titles slightly but with TLOU2, they delivered some of the absolute best third person action stealth gameplay I’ve experienced. The exploration was also much improved with some non linear areas. But again, let’s be realistic here - they’re not wizards. A Mario game doesn’t have branching story paths. A FS game doesn’t have realistic cutscenes full of dialogue and human interaction. One experience doesn’t have to encapsulate everything.

I like when a game gives the player AGENCY. This is different from choice. It means the things you do as the player have an effect on the world. They can't make the player do something and have the character they control decide to stop and give up in a cut scene.
@blackmanwithcomputer
@blackmanwithcomputer Ай бұрын
Pretty sure that's part of it. It just depends where the agency is. Is it the environment, the gameplay loop or the story. RDR2 had a lot of agency, but that was focused on the gameplay loop and environment, because the ending was predetermined. Also, the character changing their mind in a cutscene doesn't change the fact that they considered something, and that could change their relationship with other characters. We just got to wait and see.
@Ronuk1996

@blackmanwithcomputer The ending was but Arthurs character development is up to the player so it works well with the open world. If RDR 1 was not a thing they likely would have had lots of different endings, Maybe even have Low honour Arthur survive and High honour Arthur Die.

Baldur's Gate 3 offers unprecedented player freedom in how they choose to experience the game. The game has sparked debate within the industry, with many developers claiming that what Larian Studios achieved is an exception that rarely occurs and that players shouldn't expect this level of quality as it's unrealistic. I disagree with this perspective and hope that what's been accomplished in Baldur's Gate 3 will inspire other developers to strive for similar levels of excellence in their games.

Its not like "they don't trust you can solve a puzzle", its more like research has shown time and time again that some folks get stuck with some visual puzzles and there's some cognitive difference in people that make it so some people can't process well three dimensional spaces in virtual settings, so they solve this giving hints on what to focus your attention. THAT SAY, shouldn't hard AT AAAAAALLL to make a prompt at the start of the game asking "you want help solving puzzles from your companion (less time puzzlin' around and more time fighting) or do you want to solve it all by yourself?", or, even, make them say something like "hmmm I think I get it", and then you need to walk up to them and ask yo' what did you get? how do we solve this shiath? and boom, everyone happy* *everyone if we only take in consideration not morally bankrupt people. Or Twitter-Users.

Interested to see what this means. Neil said that he'd been playing a lot of games that focused more on gameplay and level design to carry the narrative of the game. He said something to the point of it opening his eyes to new directions of game design. I've been wanting them to still keep the mocap work and attention to detail, but dial back the cinematic nature of their games for all non-essential scenes. Like RDR2 and Witcher 3. A TLOU3 that tones down the cinematic direction, but puts bigger focus on environment interaction, player choices, NPC AI engagement, supply management and actual survival mechanics (like bleeding, sleep, stress, hunger, shelter, etc) is the dream TLOU game.

The crunch dinners being over is probably bitter sweet. Like obviously NEEDING to work overtime sucks, but I do feel like it would make people feel like part of a real team. Overall no crunch is 100% positive, but like I said, probably just a bit bitter sweet. As far as working from home is considered I do think it's very position dependent. Like I can imagine super involved positions that have to communicate back and forth between multiple people all day would be slower from home, but other positions that just need to communicate once or twice a day would be equally efficient.

Based on Naughty Dog's previous games and what they wanted initially for TLOU P2, player freedom could mean a bigger world, possibly more metroidvania design than open world. An experience that's more action RPG with a linear story. Explorable locations that are disconnected from the main narrative, allowing you to skip parts of a level, but connect back to the true path. Deeper stealth that actually competes with MGS5, not just basic hide and seek, but passive options like decoys and disguises. Maybe create your own weapons based on the melee weapons system they had in Part 2. Possibly more options to encounters besides kill, hide or run to checkpoint.

Well if you think ignoring what happened in the first game was what they shouldve done then youre kind of right… Joel ignored it aswell, until he got a shotgun to the knee because suprise surprise you dont blow up a hospital full of soldiers with their loved ones just accepting it and moving on… Wait, isnt the fact Joel killed so many people just to get to Ellie the exact same thing that Abby did just to get to Joel to kill him? Dont you think Joel shouldve accepted Ellie being gone the same way that you expect that no one shouldve went after Joel? Are you seriously so daft, that just the fact that you felt like you knew joel and ellie made you completely accept the deaths of countless lives while dismissing them as worthless since none compare to your daddy Joel?

I still think the last of us online could have worked. They had that mode in the first game, they could have just redone that. Or just give the online game to another trusted studio to keep patching and adding content. It really seems like Bungie either scared them away or forced them out.

It would have been cool to have a Last of Us version of "The Division" where theres a main hub. Like they release a city, town, or harbor with cruise ships as large servers that you have to battle and liberate from the infected. Mix it with the State of Decay NPC and base mechanics and it would awesome. Or get some inspiration from GTA where you can unlock your own homes/bases/locations you can invite your own party into. Then go into the PVP areas for rare supplies and equipment. Or go to Danger zones where the PVP damage is off but you explore and collect supplies with your party and extract with your bag/inventory.

100%. They’re screwed. I had a PSN account since 2014. I canceled it when they censored stellar blade and I will never sign up again. Lol. It’s just out of principal. @@Bro-dot- Dude studios don’t censor their own art lol. No Studio wants to censor their own art unless they are told to by the publisher or esrb or whatever it’s called. That is why they released the uncensored on disc. Then Sony told them to patch it after IGN and other mainstream critics complained. I don’t think you know how this works. Then when people pushed back and signed a petition and started canceling their account, they rolled it back. Didn’t you noticed they started releasing more outfits that are even more provocative than the first one? If it was the studio censoring their own art why the heck would they have even more provocative, and even more uncensored outfits in the pipeline? Also, Sony is king of censorship dude what are you talking about? They even censored one of their booklets in their own adult game but it was uncensored on Nintendo. Lol. So a child’s console it was uncensored, but Sony on their own freaking console, their own freaking studio they censored it! Do you know how many eastern games, or just games in general Sony has censored? It’s uncountable. I remember years ago Microsoft was like we don’t sensor here. Come play here. It was some game called Martha something. Sony censored it and Microsoft said just play it here we don’t censor games. Yea, Sony is king of censorship.

@@The_Primary_Axiom so you don’t have any other point aside that you can’t be a gooner on launch so now PlayStation studio must fall not like the quality of the games they make?!!!! Stellar blade is still good without the S3x appeal so to why make it only about that? There are plenty websites for you. If what they censored mattered then they wouldn’t have it censored. The censorship that occurred in stellar blade is such a tiny thing it really doesn’t impact the enjoyment of the game.

Why is working overtime called “crunch” and seen as this unfathomable thing in the games industry? I don’t like mandatory overtime anywhere and think it’s scummy, but I don’t see any industry make as big of a deal out of as the game development industry. Am I missing something? Like as a truck driver we just do some booger sugar and keep on going. Why can’t they?
@65firered
@65firered Ай бұрын
It's mainly due to how bad management tends to handle things. Instead of projects being handled by priority and using time management wisely and effectively, they just rush everything with very little strategy. Think like retail workers working on holiday but for weeks or months on end. Imagine the Christmas rush in mid August.
@WolfHeathen

It's a dumbass buzzword used by petty leftist union obsessed game journalists with zero experience of actual real work. They can't fathom the idea of working production overtime. When I had my first job at a factory making scaffolding, I worked overtime every single day simply because I had nothing else to do. Imagine having to sit in front of a computer for a few extra hours a day. The suffering!

@@THEONETRUEOVERLORD never said that was how it works. I very clearly said “I don’t like mandatory overtime anywhere and think it’s scummy” word for word. I just feel like this specific industry it gets blown way out of proportion. I am a truck driver because I didn’t like things where I was so I left until I found somewhere I do like. But like before I got. I worked for TONS of companies that would throw pizza parties and shit to suggest that you stay after dinner and keep working. And it does sucks. But like if it’s THAT bad the. They can strike like Hollywood did and just not work or they can quit. I LOVE video games and genuinely hope that the actual developers get treated fairly… that being said I still think that the video games industry is overly sensitive to it. Either strike for better conditions or leave. Complaining doesn’t get us anywhere
