Coming from an Indian, I love Apu and think he's a harmless comedic stereotype. I mean literally every character in the simpsons is some kind of stereotype (Groundskeeper Willie, Apu, Cletus, Sea Captain, Fat Tony, Chief Wiggum, etc.)

Simpsons fans from India here. Watched the show since the mid 90s when I was a kid. Never was Apu anything more than another funny character in a series full of wonderfully funny characters. Then one stupid jackass decided to bitch about comedy and now Apu is "Thank you, don't come again"
@neuronneuron36453 жыл бұрын
You finding it funny doesn't mean it isn't racist. Your argument is not valid
@honestabe63593 жыл бұрын
@@neuronneuron3645 it's not an argument. It's a fact that Apu was removed because someone couldn't handle a cartoon character.

@@honestabe6359 No The fact is that Apu was removed. The cause is open to interpretation. Either the character was an offensive stereotype that Hari courageously brought to the public eye or he was a sensitive sjw and triggered other snowflakes It's either a hero or a villain myth behind the this incident depending on your perspective Which then affects how you deal with similar situations in future
@honestabe63593 жыл бұрын
@@neuronneuron3645 the cause is definitely not that it is an offensive stereotype. Were that the cause, the groundskeeper, the Italian mob boss, Homer himself, and a fair few other characters would have been removed as well. But none of those were removed. It is beyond obvious that one guy with some social reach decided he'd make a career out of it. The Simpsons, not being the Simpsons of the 90s, decided they'd much rather bend over backwards and remove a character loved by millions of others.
@neuronneuron36453 жыл бұрын
@@honestabe6359 Yeah it would be offensive to call a groundskeeper groundskeeper Willie or a man fat tony simply because he is Italian. It's an insult. I don't think the show intended for this to happen but it does. On Haris KZbin channel he is called Apu multiple times. It's used as a racial slur It's too late now but the show can do something about the future. They already made a decision whereby characters are voiced by voice actors of their respective ethnicities. And my guess is they'll reconsider how they deal with race in general on the show (judging from Hank Azarias apology on Colbert) It's also bigger than the Simpsons with many white voice actors making a similar decision to step down from playing non white characters of their own volition - Jenny slate, Kristen Bell and others

@@theALTF4 erm I’m an “Indian Indian” as you call it myself. Like the other “Indian Indians” you’re referring to, we are usually used to casual racism. Stereotypes like this infiltrate the brains of simpletons. I’ll give you an example. I’m from a family where my father is a psychiatrist and successful business owner. My mother is clinical lead radiographer/manager of the 3 main London hospitals. As a child, adults would regularly approach me to ask how the “restaurant” or “store” is doing? Based on absolutely nothing apart from the fact I’m Indian. To impersonate accents is something that’s pretty outdated these days, something that was funny maybe 10 years ago. The flanderisation of all Simpsons characters has reduced them to *nothing but* their stereotypical features, so to say there’s more to Apu than the stereotype is simply untrue.
@atiyadavids46513 жыл бұрын
@@theALTF4 pretty much everything you said in your comment contradicts your actual message. What do Middle Easterns have to do with Apu? In the mind of an American is Asia one big country to you?
