Lululemon's founder, Chip Wilson, has attracted negative attention over the years for his unapologetic honesty when explaining his goals for the brand. These goals include wanting athletic individuals to wear Lululemon's athletic clothing. Is that so bad?

The difference though is height isn't controlled, but weight definitely is. So for short people that case can actually be made because they didn't choose to get those genes, whereas obese women are claiming people HAVE to bend their knee to their weight when they chose to mistreat their bodies for decades. They made choices and expect everything to just agree with their choices, and compensate them for being unhealthy.

I've seen companies that specialize in plus size clothing say that they refuse to offer smaller sizes and they've been applauded for that. I don't see why the opposite shouldn't be allowed.
@shikonseshu
@shikonseshu 5 ай бұрын
But they specifically market themselves as plus size brands. If they're a small brand, they could always offer MTO options for smaller sizes, instead of outright refusing, at a slightly higher price to cover their costs. But that's besides the point. Multinational and mass produced brands like Lululemon are athleisure brands--for people engaging in related activities. Those people aren't always, necessarily, on the smaller side.

@@bevw611 I know what that feels like, but I don't think we need separate gyms for larger people. Parts of the equipment, like the seating for instance, could do with a bit of modification so that larger people can use them comfortably, but as for the space itself, I think it's up to each person to simply acknowledge the shame and embarrassment they feel upon entering such gyms, deal with their emotions in a healthy manner, and learn to make use of those spaces alongside everybody else. That's what I do every day because at the end of the day, it's not about them or how they perceive us but what we're there to achieve. We just need to get our priorities in order.

THIS, Same, I am a mum of 3, just turned 30, have PCOS and weighed 105kg (230lbs) when I started going to the gym in October, I literally have bought some pretty cool fabrics to have custom made into activewear leggings as a reward for a few months time when I have hopefully dropped 10kg. As a sadly overweight person who is working on it, the way I see it is: workout clothes should be for people who want to/need to work out, so yeah have some bigger sizes because having a nice outfit can do a lot for getting someone out to the gym to work out while looking nice. But as for models? I wanna see fit, good-looking people. We wanna see people that show us what we can achieve if we keep at working out. I honestly get really grossed out when fitness clothing sites are forcing me to look at 500+ lb models. That's not gunna make me want your items, because they're obviously not for actually working out if that's how your customer base looks.

This is my thought too. I didn’t start out fit but if I could never find clothes to exercise in, I wouldn’t have ever gotten to be fit. Also lululemon is so expensive, yet they can’t have leggings that hold up to thighs touching each other? That’s sus, and sounds like an excuse for cheaply made leggings being charged at crazy prices. Especially since I’ve found very well made leggings for cheaper prices. Like, to me it sounds like he only wants women who do very light workouts, who have thigh gaps, to be wearing his products, which by all means, go for it, but don’t say you’re marketing toward fit women. Fit women actually do come in many shapes and sizes, like having thick muscular thighs and being able to rigorous workouts that need leggings to hold up to that challenge.

I'd argue models to an extent should also reflect those who are working on themselves but with the caveat that If the body fat %/bmi of the person isnt reflective if the actual % of those in those weight class working on themselves then it is just virtue signaling. So they can have 1 plus size model and it would be realistic while being inclusive. Regardless point is too nuanced for most ideologues.

As someone who is 6’4 with really long legs who finds it hard to find pants/clothes in my size, I thought I wanted brands to make more options for tall people, but I’ve found that brands that make clothes exclusively for tall people are actually much better at making clothes that fit tall people. I don’t want every brand to increase their product line for me because it’ll just make their product more expensive, and the quality won’t be as good as something by a brand which focuses it’s resources entirely on perfecting a product that suits their specific customers. Thank you American Tall for making good clothes for tall people.

My mother used to work at Long Tall Sally and Tall Girl (being 6’ 1”), before they eventually closed the locations she had worked at. It was unbelievable the amount of times she would come home from work and talk about a short woman coming to the store, asking “if they carried - - in a smaller size”. When she or another coworker would inevitably say no, the person would throw a fit and leave, proclaiming “I’ll never come back here…” or some variation of that. After the person had left and the door was shut they’d just laugh hysterically among themselves at how stupid that person was; followed by lamenting that in due time another such clown would walk through the doors, repeating the process.

I work in branding and 100% agree with the statement that a brand can’t be everything to everyone. If it doesn’t have a particular audience, the message and focus gets so watered down that it’s no longer clear what the brand is about and it’s not going to resonate with the right people (those who will actually buy). HOWEVER, I do think a lot of overweight girls use buying cute gym clothes as a motivation to actually go to the gym. Case in point: I saw quite a few overweight women at the gym when I went yesterday. They were all wearing leggings. Yes, it’s the beginning of a new year and many current gymgoers won’t last, but plenty of naturally skinny women buy leggings and don’t even go to the gym. It’s just a fashion statement. If society wasn’t so sensitive, I would say he should offer plus sizes that are extra durable but ALSO extra expensive. Making them an investment will help him focus his brand on leggings made to be USED, and a greater financial buy-in is statistically more likely to increase the likelihood of women implicitly committing to that at purchase. They’ll feel they’re in too deep to back out now. Makes quitting bigger deal. He could raise the price for skinny leggings too and have the same affect. Basic pricing psychology.
@solaris2886
@solaris2886 6 ай бұрын
I completely agree, I would just say, raising the price for leggings can cause price shock and decrease in sales at this point because Lulu is already expensive to begin with. I think it would be better to changing to a similarly priced durable yet breathable material, then change the knitting technique and style. That way they can be priced similarly to the prices now while offering a wider solution but again thats a big research investment for a minor set of his customer base. Personally I work out and lounge in my lulu leggings without an issue, I've had them for a few years now and they've been pretty durable for me. Although I've noticed that they have this really nice compression feature, I think maybe its the stretch and recovery of the compression thats wearing out for some people. That being said, the stretch/recovery is definitely something that would wear out quickly for those in the plus size range no matter the material, so I dont think there's a quick solution to combat physics.

I'm an expert because I have watched Shark Tank a lot. I just wanted to lay out my credentials. Adding more skus is a big investment for a clothing company. They have to be sure that the upside is there before making that decision. Would women understand the extra cost or be triggered by it?
@kcchristian
@kcchristian 6 ай бұрын
Or he could just stick to his target audience and leave an availability in the market for a specific plus-sized legging brand to fill. Wouldn’t that be better for everyone to have more affordable Lululemon for those who are athletic and more specifically tailored plus-sized options by another brand whose attention is truly focused on providing a good product for that market? I think it seems like a good idea to companies to just keep broadening their customer base to increase profits, but this just increases costs for the consumer to pay for when sticking to a defined brand and audience builds trust and loyalty with your dollars. Just my two cents

I get your point, but perhaps Chip Wilson is most concerned with healthy looking people wearing his product and fine with the money Lululemon generates. I go to the gym 3-4 times a week; the over-weight women who were just at the gym for the first time ever the last time you went won't be there two weeks from now and it will have nothing to do with Lululemon, especially since Lululemon isn't the only brand of leggings on the market. I've been using the same gym for over three years and we do have some members who are there regularly and may have had some extra pounds when they started, but they don't seem to be having trouble finding leggings; of course I don't know what brand they are, but if they're not Lululemon, these women still have the ability to workout. Based on these people's "logic" we should be in the streets demanding that Lamborghini start making cars that cost way less money so they'll quit discriminating against people with an average income...

Chip Wilson is one of the founders of Lululemon and actually wanted to build a brand of clothing for women that took them from the studio to running errands and socializing. He has never wanted large or even old women (interpretation mine) wearing the clothes. It was directly for the young, professional woman, with YES, extra money (and not time) to spend on clothes that go from gym to other pursuits without going home to change. He has never changed his original vision.

Now after having a baby, I find my self plus sized ans back to loosing the weight again, and I have mixed feelings. I’m thankful that the brand still fits me, but the allure and motivation to get into the clothes is gone. So I understand that athletic wear is for athletic people, but as someone who has been on the heavier side of things, I appreciate that I could easily find leggings that fit me well when I first started going to the gym. Going to the gym for the first time was already scary enough, I would have felt so much less motivated to go if I wasn’t able to wear normal workout clothes and thus made to stand out even more. It makes sense that the brand/marketing of an athletic wear company would feature healthy athletic bodies, but having leggings and sports bras that fit bigger people is necessary if we actually want them to get healthy.

Even the skinniest women don’t have thigh gaps all the time. But also what I’m really getting from that is that he isn’t marketing towards FIT women, he is marketing towards thin women with thigh gaps. I do CrossFit, so I see women of all shapes and sizes doing rigorous workouts that are much more than just yoga stretches walking on a treadmill. And they still need workout clothes. (And by shapes and sizes, I mean like like bulky, muscular thighs). But I guess that isn’t the type of customer he wants to buy his product? I personally do appreciate larger sizes in athletic wear. I am 5’7” and at the height of my fitness, I weighed 150 lbs at 15% body fat. My legs and butt were extremely muscular/thick and my waist was very small. There was absolutely no way for me to wear any normal pants and so I’d typically wear leggings to both train in and with daily outfits (paired with tunic length shirts and dresses). Then I got pregnant and realized my lululemon leggings were the only pants that still comfortably fit over my belly. I never bought maternity pants because my lululemon leggings did the trick. I have them ranging in sizes from 6-12 and I wear them all regularly regardless of whether I’m pregnant or not. I agree to an extent that we do not need to cater to an obese population but we do need to consider the life circumstances of people who are just trying to buy good quality clothes to fit their needs. I’m sure something that keeps fat chicks fat is feeling like there’s nothing comfy and cute to exercise in.

That is the problem, the sense that unless you have this brand you have nothing comfy and cute to work out in. There is also this thing called tailoring, a foreign concept maybe to someone 5’7” but to all of us under 5’4”, essential. The extremes that extend to I must have x to lose weight, x being, this diet, this pill, this item of clothing, etc., indicate a person more focused on setting up their own obstacles through abdicating responsibility than someone who wants a change for themselves.

I am a few days away from having another baby and my gym attendance has taken a nose dive since I don’t have as many clothing options that fit properly in my third trimester. Again, people who are trying to make meaningful lifestyle changes still deserve access to high quality clothes that fit well and help facilitate confidence and comfort in doing things that might feel out of their comfort zone. Wouldn’t you want fat people to feel empowered to make these changes? Clothes are a big element of that.

I have somewhat mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, yes using fat models in an athletic brand is dumb, but on the other hand I wish more people would make decent and/or stylish athletic clothes for fats. As a fat of moderate size who's been working out more regularly for the past several months, one of the unexpectedly big struggles I had when I got started was finding clothes that 1) fit me and 2) doesn't make me look repulsive (eg skin tight things that show off rolls). So there do need to be work out/athletic gear for fats, I don't agree with him on that, but definitely yeah don't use fats to advertise athletic wear or glorify unhealth in a health brand.

We have reached a point in society where people believe that "whataboutism" should be the norm, where they believe that everything should be for everyone, they have so little personality and character of their own that they need to be targeted by all the brands that exist in the world, and the worst part is that it is never enough, if your brand does not have the size 158XL then it is not inclusive enough. Lululemon has become more of an aesthetic than a brand for sports clothing that looks cute and is comfortable, I'm glad to know that there is someone who for once is putting the target audience as a priority instead of trying to be accommodating enough for these kind of insatiable people.
