I'm going to use that. Where tf do these folks get off thinking they can cancel someone for using their freedom of speech? I'm really worried about the direction this is headed, as we are already being silenced by the loudest and most annoying amongst us. People fall silent to threats on their lives, threats to their family's and doxing. The real problem is not the people expressing their opinions, but the people that do not realize that this was a right that was fought for. It used to be I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it. Now... they've happily eroded that right, the 'cry bullies' are the real monsters here.

I’m a Christian and in the cosplay community. It is madness sometimes. The irony of this is that you have to pay EXTRA to meet the stars at cons. If you don’t want to meet them, you don’t have to. You have to WANT to meet them, you’re not just going to run into them. These people act like breathing the same air as someone who doesn’t agree with someone is going to kill them. They’re so incredibly insecure with themselves they can’t even be in the same room as someone who won’t go out of their way to affirm all their nonsense. I can only imagine how fast a bunch of the cosplayers I know would turn on me if they knew half of what I believe. Despite having no problem with being their friends and following them on SM knowing full well what they believe and disagreeing with it. You don’t see me dragging them in the dirt and calling them nasty names and hate commenting. That’s supposed to be the beautiful thing about fandoms. They bring together people from all over the world and all walks of life who might otherwise have nothing in common. It’s great because it’s inclusive in that the only thing you need to get in is a mutual interest in the same book, movie, tv show, game, etc. but the liberals make about more than just that. And they’re destroying fandoms from the inside, tearing apart the fabric of once beautiful communities with their hatefulness and intolerance.

Bravo!! You took the words right out of my mouth (fingers?) Been going to cons since the 80's and if there happened to be someone at one I either didn't like, or just didn't care about was stunningly easy not to see them and their presence had absolutely no effect on my enjoyment of the proceedings. I simply didn't go to their panel or join their autograph line. NEVER did it occur to me to have them forcibly removed simply because I didn't want them there...but then again I'm not a raging narcissist. And I hear ya on the Cosplay front. There is a cosplay/performing group I've been a part of for over 15 years and no one used to care what anyone's beliefs were outside of celebrating our shared fandoms, even when some of the folks who knew I didn't subscribe to groupthink didn't care because that wasn't why we were there. Now? persona non grata and have been quietly removed. The funny part is, the guy who is kind of the leader (at least he was who we all knew first and most events happen at his home) still calls me all the time as he is being driven nuts by all the PC crap and alphabet people demands that all the new folks brought in, but I'm the only one he can talk to about it as he'd be destroyed so just keeps his mouth shut and tries to hide his disgust at things like the recent episodes of Dr. Who (for example). It will never cease to amaze me those calling the loudest for acceptance and diversity are the most violent when you show any sign of not following them to the smallest degree. I used to go to multiple conventions every year, now I've been to two this decade (granted, COVID didn't help, but wasn't the only reason). It makes me sad, especially as I want to share this with my son who's at a great age for it, but in many ways just isn't worth it anymore because it is no longer about a bunch of people getting together to celebrate their shared love of geeky stuff, but about seeing who has the most letters and pronouns in their bio.

As someone who is Canadian a public high school graduate and now in the colleges and universities of Canada, which are incredibly left-leaning, I have to say I’m embarrassed that people would go after this amazing actress. This is ridiculous. I am a nerd and I fucking love comic books, and she has done nothing but show support and love for the media she has been in, I stand with her

Brett not outright condemning conventions is a pleasant surprise! I'm a regular con-goer and honestly wish that the environment was more inclusive in the sense of ideas. It's pretty obvious that online and fandom culture in general is left-leaning

As a Canadian who lives in Vancouver, I am disappointed that people here are complaining about her attending a convention, but unfortunately not surprised. Kudos to Fan Expo for inviting her and for standing by that decision in the face of the cancel mob, when many other organizations have caved. I hope Gina enjoys her trip to Vancouver - the city has much more to offer than hypersensitive activists.

I have stopped attending comic cons because I feel extremely unwelcome and uncomfortable letting people know “the real me.” Half of what they seem to want to talk about is how their political views are mirrored in their cosplay or character, expect me to applaud every cosplayer and actor, and expect that if I am a fan of a person’s work I must also get into lock-alignment with their political and ethical ideas. I’ve always felt I’m too weird for the normal people and too normal for the weird people, but at least the normal people are nicer about it.

The main reason to have a safe space at a Comic Con is so that a Cosplayer has some where to go if they have encountered someone who will not take No for an answer and acting as a creep
@dinosaurwoman11 ай бұрын
No, it's because people are catering to a vocal minority who can't control their emotions. You don't need a safe space if someone is bothering you, cosplay or not. The whole Cosplay is Not Consent is based on a woman who lied about being raped at a con-sponsored party. She was sued and lost. ANYONE can be harrassed at any time--it's not just cosplayers. I don't see "safe spaces" at target. Find a security guard or do what we all used to do--get lost in a big crowd and go outside.
@Mithguar11 ай бұрын
@@dinosaurwoman Sorry but you are wrong. There are some weirdoes out there. As culture of conventions comes in large part from Japan, there were cases of fanatical fans assaulting or even scaring/killing their idol. It can get extreme in fandoms. Of course in US danger comes from these weirdoes. Non the less, a safe space as in a location with heightened security on a big event isn't bad in any regard and claiming otherwise just shows that you have no clue about crowd control and organisation of large events. Safe space for hurt feeling on the other hand... Maybe they should just distribute helmets... Because life is tough xD
@jachyra411 ай бұрын
"glomping" used to be a thing at conventions, but the organizers started making it clear tgat this was never acceptable. People were getting injured, costumes damaged, that sort of thing. Over-enthusiastic fans are everywhere, and some definitely won't take no, even if it's just for that selfie with a cosplayer.
@cupit91611 ай бұрын
I’ve been cosplaying for many years at conventions. I’ve also been part of the press team at some of these same conventions. while I hate fan expo for just being a poorly run franchise con, when I meet celebrities for press promos or even as a cosplay attendee, I can separate artist from their opinions. Because that’s just what they are, opinions. If opinions are harmful to your safe space, then it maybe time to reevaluate how you interact with the world around you.
