As a student of animation and a amateur animation historian, I just wanted to say a major thank you for taking time out of your life to give us all these tips and information. You clearly know your field and what it takes for newbies like me to get into. Again thank you for all that you do. Should our paths cross I would be honored to work on the same project with you. Thank you again.

@InHuman First & foremost they want to see that you are capable of animating anything. Be it objects like a bouncing ball or a character in motion. Also it is not about the length of your portfolio or demo reel. You can have 20 second one, so long as it only shows off your best work. Second don't have anything redundant. Don't just have like characters walking in place. Do one where it is a walk cycle then the next be maybe an expressive act. Third always be sure to leave your contact information. You would be surprised how many people forget this. And lastly be confident in your work. Don't downplay or criticize it. That's what the school's staff will do. Show that you made your work with pride, but not too much. Don't have an ego. I hope these tips help you. I have been struggling to find a job in the industry myself, but that doesn't mean you should feel down by my words. Remain vigilant & keep your spirits up. With enough dedication & patience you will get a job or get into a school or position in animation.

@InHuman That all depends on what kind of animation job you are going for. It is a traditional 2D than go with that. If it is like 3D than go digital.

This was great! I've been working on projects to put together an environment portfolio and keep getting frustrated because I don't have experience in that industry, so after a while running into a bunch of mistakes because of things I didn't know starts to get overwhelming. You basically addressed everything I've been stressing about today, and now I'm much more motivated to keep working at it, so I'm probably going to refer back to this the next time it starts getting stressful. Thanks so much for doing this vid and the others!

The biggest mistakes I found was people using work that wasn’t theirs in the book. One person looking for work sent a portfolio to Warner Bros and it made it’s way to Gary Hartle and myself. The storyboard samples were all from our Producer Gary Hartle. Now I imagine the person thought they would get hired on at Warner Bros and no one would be the wiser. The other case of portfolio fraud was when the husband of a really good background painter that we used a lot, sent us some of her samples. I suppose they figured we would give work to him and his wife would do it. Very strange.

Where was this advice when I went to Art SCHOOL!!!!!! Stupid Teachers. "'you have to be able to show everything".
@xBlacksStarx
@xBlacksStarx 6 жыл бұрын
AGREED. This is WAY more informative than anything I've heard from our teachers, or even representatives from studios. We had someone from pixar show up at our school and all he talked about was how *he* got recruited because he was noted for his talent. When it was finally time for him to give us advice, all he said was, "show everything, and keep emailing us, we'll eventually get back to you, even if we don't the first dozen times" I was so upset.

Well, applying to an art school or for the AP Studio exam has vastly different requirements. You have to show that you're exceptionally creative and have a wide ability range, as well as strong fundamental skills. Applying for a job is very specific, so tailoring your portfolio to the job description is a must

A little late commenting. But I figured I'd ask. What would be your advice for someone that didn't finish school? I was in school but I had a lot of personal issues and never finished my degree. I would love to go back, but after paying off that debt, I'm not sure if I want to or really NEED to go back into debt. I know with visual art careers, your portfolio is far more important than your education. Times have really changed with social media too. I ended up working in retail and worked up into management positions. I ended up quitting a few months ago to pursue art. I work a few freelance web and graphic design jobs now, which is way better for me. And now I'm working on a graphic novel project. I also want to release artbooks for it as well.. Do you think something like that might help me to eventually land a job working for a company doing this despite never finishing my degree? Thanks so much! :D
@lulusketches
@lulusketches 6 жыл бұрын
Bobbi Shaw having a degree isn’t necessary! the most important thing is a killer portfolio :) also you’re already working on a graphic novel which is awesome! you could take online art courses through CGMA or Schoolism (there’s more I just can’t think of them now) or if you’re in the LA area you could sign up for individual classes at Concept Design Academy. you can pick and choose your classes for what area you want to work in or areas you want to improve in! a lot of artists in the industry don’t have degrees but have taken online courses like these, and they help you build a nice portfolio! Hope this helps :)
@tehrinny7031

Thanks so much! It's great to know that there are people in the industry working that don't have degrees but have taken courses. Things were a lot different in the early 2000's when I was in college, where going to the right school was everything and if you didn't go to the big name schools (like me wheeee~), you were out of luck. That's super inspiring and motivating to know!
