I suffered for 3 years with severe pain and loss of instant mobility. I was afraid of back surgery but had no choice. The pain took over my life. in 2011, I had my L5-S1 fused along with a disc implant. Just like in the video. Although, to minimize scar tissue in my back, my surgeon went thru the front and the incision was done on lower abdomen. I was walking a climbing stairs within 2 days. NO back or sciatic pains at all. After several months, to be safe, I was golfing and doing light jogging. Thankful for the procedure, my surgeons, and modern medicine. I got my life back.

@@poky1 When I woke up from recovery and the anesthesia wore off, the pain in the back was gone! At that point I smiled at my wife and said I haven't felt this good in years. We were ecstatic. They kept me for 2 full days to ensure there was no infection or issues and for me to start the therapy. After the 1st night, I was getting out of bed on my own and walking to the bathroom. And therapy started. Which I passed with no problem. The only pain I had was in my lower stomach from where the incision was made. Good luck to you. It's a breeze. Let me know how it goes.

It has been almost 10 days now. I am regularly running 4-5 km and doing physical exercise. I have got a lot of relief from pain. I hope I will get rid of this problem by doing exercises. I got a full spinal fusion when I was 15. I had severe scoliosis (75 degrees if I remember correctly), and the doctors said I would be at a 90 degree angle by the time I was 20 if I didn't get this surgery. It was the most painful thing I've been through to this day. I was stuck in bed for about a month, post op depression was a bitch, and my parents had to sleep in shifts because I had to take pain meds every few hours 24/7. Although it was a rough recovery, it was the best decision I made. I can now fully walk and run just fine. The only thing is that I can't bend my spine (obviously) but that's not too bad. My back pain has gotten SO much better too. Anyone who's scared to get this surgery, don't worry! It's okay to be scared, normal even. But everything will be okay in the end and you'll be glad you did it :)

I'm not a professional, but i consider myself educated on back pain. I have had C6/7 fusion, as the disc was totally destroyed, my entire left arm went numb, and my bicep/tricep/pectoral muscles all atrophied to waste. That surgery has helped me tremendously, but it was a last resort only after the disc completely started pressing on the nerve. I have 6 other herniated discs, degeneration & severe stenosis. My lumbar discs are really bad, and ive been a "candidate" for surgery for years. I have successfully avoided surgery, and my pain is now quite .manageable. I eat healthy, i exercise,im 52 with a 30 inch wasteline, i use an inverted bench, a spinal decompression bench,hot epsom salt baths, and a heating pad. For pain, i take Kratom and turmeric/bosweillia.I still go through periods of pain that feels like an icepick in my back, numbness/tingling down my leg, and my sciatic nerve twitching and feeling like a hot rubber band in my butt cheek. But its manageable now. Maybe it will help others, im not sure. Definitely helped me. Good luck all my pain companions!

I am a long distance runner and had a neurosurgeon tell I would never be able to run again without this operation. I got another opinion from another doctor who told me to not run for 6-8 months and see how it goes. I took my MRI to a chiropractor and he said he can fix my herniated disk in 3 sessions. The body will often reabsorb some of the protruding disc over time & pain+cramps will often greatly diminish. I went natural & the situation gradually improved over 2 years. I would recommend isometric exercises (buttocks, thighs, tummy scrunches) lying immobile on side if you have much pain to strengthen the lower back and hips which helps alot. Simple walking is great if you can. It can build strength, stamina & flexibility alone (40 min 3x per week as a goal you can build up to. I have a l4-L5 fusion with a cage. Going on 20 years now. But I had a traumatic injury with a shattered vertebrae. Without the fusion and cage…. I’d have been a vegetable. Wouldn’t even have been able to sit up. In all honesty, it was a godsend. Still have pain but I’m now walking. Kind of walking. I have bilateral foot drop so nothings perfect. But better than the alternative.

I had low back pain and found a back rehab facility. I lifted weights and used a special weight machine for the lower back. By lifting weights and making the muscles, tendons and ligaments stronger, my back pain went away. That was 10 years ago and I still lift weights to make my back stronger. I would never chose elective back surgery and have someone messing around near my spinal cord!

I believe you have metal. That holds things in place until the true fusion occurs when the harvested bone forms a solid bond. The bone from your hip is ground up and mixed with some shit to help it grow. It is placed around the vertebrae and in time will become a solid bony connection.

A workout buddy of mine had lumbar fusion back in 1999. He said he couldn't do much movement. He got if because of heavy lifting, he was a big guy. Back in the day I never wore a weightlifting belt even when I did heavy weights. I paid the price with a herniated disc in lumbar region. When it occurred I couldn't do shit for a week, just take Doans back pill. I just stretched it out well and avoided heavy deadlifts, no belt still. Having lumbar fusion is the one thing I do not want; the thought of restricted mobility just lingers in my head.

What if spinal surgery is needed for spinal TB, should we consider a neuro surgeon instead of orthopedic? N why is that?
@arjanbogaers80032 жыл бұрын
@@ToThoseWhoVanished as far as I know, spinal (bone) TB, if not in a too-advanced stage, can be treated and cured with multiple drug therapy, usually over a long period of time. However, it the condition has resulted in serious deformity with the risk of paralysis, corrective surgery might be necessary (after which drug therapy continues). I'd prefer a neuro surgeon to work on the spine, but the final choice can be subject to several factors, such as medical aid cover, availability in one's region, urgency of the procedure. @scott22285 жыл бұрын
glitchez yes, I woke up in the hospital bed in pain I never knew existed. And that pain never left. I was told the “surgical pain” could take 6 months to pass. In never did. I ended up on a 7 day psych hold once the pain broke me. It (the pain) cost me my job, marriage, friends...etc. due to various reasons. Dr’s will no longer treat me bc I fall outside their parameters of “treatable.” I no longer take pain medication bc... no dr’s. I manage now with herbal remedies like Kratom, ice packs & heating pads and Cymbalta for nerve damage. I’m now only 42. Looking back, my life would have been manageable if I never had the fusion. I still have 2 more herniated disks in the thoracic spine but that’s another story. I went to a different surgeon 2 years after the fusion and he confirmed the surgery was done correctly. I was just the 1 out of 10 that had “failed back surgery syndrome” Moral of the story: unless your life is completely over, and I’m talking over over.....It shouldn’t even be a consideration. PS. The herb Kratom is the only reason I am even able to get out of bed. Drs don’t want to talk about it bc big pharma doesn’t make $ off it.

What can be done with a blotched 'failed' Lumbar Fusion and associated pain occurring above buttocks ea time the muscle flexs, can the surgeon do it again to fix it without taking four hours in surgery as the first time.

I had a lumbar 360 where they went through my lower stomach instead to remove the disc. They put plates and pins in the back after turning me over. I healed pretty good. But 10 years later I have accelerated disc degeneration above the fused area due to the fusion and horrible SI joint pain.

@@warrenthomas3168 Yea, I have since then back in 2006, had another back surgery, and 2 neck surgeries. I have intense chronic pain in my neck with numbness and cramping, and my lower back is just wrecked. It hurts all the time, in my hips, down my legs. I regret having the low back surgery more than anything. On top of all that I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis that is affecting the blood vessels in my body and joints. Its sucks, but all I can do is try to manage. The doctors never explain to you that the fusion of the spine can lead to rapid deterioration of the disks above and below the fusion, and that you will have more issues years later. Had I known, I would have waited a lot longer before having the surgeries.

I'm having the same procedure done next month. L5-S1. I know there are risks but I'll risk ANYTHING to get rid of this intense pain I've been dealing with. I can't discuss details but it was an accident that caused my injury...I've been in constant pain for 8 months. Out of work, can't sit, can't stand, can't put pressure on my back, can only lie on my right side, walk for short distances assisted by a cane. Tired of living like this. Tried every other option.

Hi. I had my L5-S1 fused in 2009. Now I am getting pain in adjacent joints. How are u now?
@sueda362 жыл бұрын
In general my fused area went through a lot bc a nerve kept getting active but after countless mri s they could never find the cause, so with time I just learned to live with it. No more extreme pain to the point I was unable to function apart from a few days a year on which I try to rest as much as possible and take some meds. Oh and my fusion area was L1-L4. But then, I had a herniated disc on L5-S1 for which I got a microdiscectomy a month ago and I am pretty sure it blew again. Tried to avoid a second fusion especially bc I dont want to lose my mobility but seems ike that will be the only option for me soon :) still trying to be positive and will consider a 2nd microdiscectomy first but lets see
