Lumbar Puncture Procedure - What to Expect

I just had one done, started off fine with my back being injected with lidocaine. What they don’t tell you is the possible of hitting a damn nerve. I had screamed like I was dying. I watched the doc push the needle into my spin via a live x-ray. Still getting over it today 🙃

I had one done today and it was not bad at all. Didn’t feel anything but a small poke. They made me wait one hour after to make sure I didn’t get a headache. No headache at all . We will see how I feel tomorrow.

I’m guessing your a strong person. I want to be put asleep for the procedure as it seems intrusive and extremely painful. I am so terrified. Since getting it done have you got a really bad headache? And are you able to pursue life as normal?

@@charleneteka1484 honestly I didn’t get a headache the doctor doing it was very comforting. I feel people make this procedure more then what it actually is. I say do it and have the doctor continue to talk to you.

I just had one done 10 hours ago under mild sedation and local anesthesia and still felt them digging around my spine. The headache is on the verge of unbearable... my back is completely sore to the point I can’t even pass gas because that hurts! No movement at all. I’m laying on my back.. forget about going to the bathroom. I want to cry. My legs are tingling and toes and other body parts. I’m doped up on antibiotics to prevent infection. Glad it’s over. Also this procedure was done for possible IIH!

@@aliciabrowne3991 just for some info. They tried to do it twice on me without any sedation but it was just to painful so My back was already sore and I have a very low pain tolerance. I’m totally fine today. If I do to much or bend to much I’ll get pains but it takes time to heal. You will be fine. Trust me. You really have to rest, so if you have a significant other or a parent, have them wait on you hand and foot lol. That was the best thing out of all of this. Also FYI not everyone gets the headaches but look out for that. Rest rest rest and sleep sleep sleep. You’ll be good 😄 do you mind me asking what’s the reason for the puncture

@@superaleja1090 what is it for? Just stay relaxed. Do you live with anyone who can take care of you. You will be numbed up and won’t feel it. It’s more painful when you are in the heavier side. Fuck... the procedure I hope I never need ☹️ My brother had to get one when he was 10 because he had bacterial meningitis. He was very ill, but thankfully, he made a full recovery.

i would rather have a spinal tap vs a root canal. My spinal tap when i was 16 didn’t hurt at all. I do have a chronic pain condition where my migraines are 24/7 ( I am filed for disability ) so my pain scale is different from others. They had to tell me to stop talking because i was so chatty with them lol. Hopefully you will only feel pressure and only slight pains afterwards. The anxiety from horror stories and what you see on tv is worse than the procedure imo.

Well, I do root canals with a dentist and the only reason you hear horror stories about getting them done is from people who are so incredibly infected (they waited way too long) that it's hard to get them numb. If you get a root canal done before it's too late it is pretty much the equivalent of getting a filling. Root canals are not that bad unless you come in when you are bulging at the face from an abscessed tooth

They told me I would feel pressure. It felt like someone jabbing their finger into my back. No big deal. Then the doctor hit a nerve bundle and it was like wave after wave of lightning strikes through my entire lower body.

I had headaches for atleast a week to 10 days later. the only way to stop them was to lie down !!! After that amount of days I was finally fine but gradually just be patient

I had mine done 4 days ago and Jesus Christ, the headaches are the absolute worst. Ive had to stand and go to the hospital during these days for shots and finally today was my last day because just sitting down was hell. I can now rest and lie down these coming days, i just want the pain to stop.

Just had one done they had me lay on my stomach I felt everything hurt so bad i was crying finally put an IV in and gave me meds to make me relax.

If fluid is taken maximum upto 4 ml, headache doesn’t happen.

Isida took alot of fluids. Have to keep fluids in me. I have had a kidney transplant in the past. So its very important i keep hydrated. Still didnt get rid of my headache. Thank God it finally went away after about a week

Lie in your bed without standing up... you have to rely on your close ones to take care of you... speaking from experience

The worst is definitely the lightning bolts you could experience... I've gone through 9 procedures total, 10th is next week. I'm here to see if there is a way to avoid the pain during the procedure, because every procedure for me feels completely random... One time it goes without pain, and the next time it feels like there is a thunderstorm in my legs. Any ideas on how to prevent the pain?

Unfortunately, I’ve found that the pain you described is usually caused by where the needle is compared to the nerve running down into the lag, at least this is what the radiologist has said. I have had around 17, one coming up next week, I haven’t needed one since 2016. Not looking forward to it, I usually have terrible spinal headaches afterwards.

Ask them to sedate you. They won't put you to sleep, but yes there's a way to avoid all that pain. Except the first pinching for sedation shots. I got mine yesterday with sedation, and even though is still uncomfortable, it was a lot less painful than the first time I got one without sedation.

yea just found out my docter wants to do one on me, i've had double vission for 8 months and has run everyt test that he can and results have come back good, i don't like needles and am affraid something can go seriously wrong and i could be parilised for the rest of my life

I will NEVER allow this again. I didn't even make it through the whole procedure. The doctor got to needle happy but OH MY GOSH I screamed so freaking loud. It Felt like they put hot ass iron rods down into my right leg or a BOLT off lighting. Finally after i said stop four times she finally listened to my son. And took out the needle. He was in the room. My sun is my emergency contact. Never again.

I had it done yesterday, I'd say don't be scared. Just listen to the doctor and the rest of the medical team, follow their instructions and try to think of something else whilst they're doing it. The only thing I would of done differently is ask more questions after the procedure about the recovery and how I should take care of where the needle went in. I have had a really bad headache since the operation it feels a be better when I lay down but if I stand up or I'm upright the headache gets more painful.

I got mine done yesterday at age 16 and now I’m in bed laying down resting cause They had to do it 3 times before they found the right spot and also took some blood. so my back kinda hurts and if I stand up I feel dizzy but the puncture self didn’t hurt at all

Hey! Mine was not the best however the did end up sedating me. They gave my the highest dose and I still did fall asleep like expect so I was awake and very anxious. They had to do it 6 different times before the right spot was picked and I was in pain for days after. My back was very brushed but that’s all. It was hard to walk and get out of bed but I wouldn’t worry about it. If you are super anxious like I was they can sedate you so your will be fine! Let me know how it goes xx
