A trick I find works well, on small engines in winter, is to take the spark plug out and warm it up with a blow torch or on the stove. Put it back in warm. Works every time.

In the case of the small shark engine, starting fluid may have done the job. The air filter covers often come off vary easy, so you just spray the filter full of starting fluid and set the throttle on full but no choke for a crank or two, then back to choke. It normally starts right up once the more volatile fuel gets in the cylinder.

The Shark 700 decided it didn't want to cooperate and start so the LT40 was fired up. Sammi makes her appearance doing her thing bringing some more logs to the LT40 and doing firewood. In most cases of modern sawmills its electrical failures. Or pneumatic or hydraulic but mostly electrical. In many cases even inferior components used by the manufacturers. We get it all the time and can cost days. The sad thing is to not embrace the technology is the direct route to failure. The market is so competitive that if one supplier fails to cost the machine depreciation then no one can ever recoup the costs.

You guys are so lucky to be family. You understand the downside of the machine breakdowns but to add to that in the commercial world of sawmilling is the guy or girl that can't turn in on time if at all today or this week or the next. In sawmilling and forestry breakdowns happen., the ability to change the plans at the last minute shows who the winners are. From experience the head sawyer should be the best person to understand this as they experience the need to change the cutting plan for a log in less than a second, evertime they make a cut. Keep it up guys.
@Jake-mm1cz2 жыл бұрын
If others haven’t already suggested this for your cold temperamental machine : couple of things to keep in a warm area close to the machine . A ratchet / correct spark plug socket , can of starting fluid , small 1 pound size propane heater or an engine heater connected to the crankcase , timer and 12gauge extension cord . I shouldn’t have to say this but some goofball will comment if I don’t . Keep the propane heater a safe distance from the gasoline if comfortable using a propane heater in an area near your gas tank and fuel line . If not then maybe an engine block heater could be attached and plugged in before needing it or on a timer if using frequently . The last suggestion would probably be the easiest and safest way but I thought that I would put all suggestions out there . Enjoy your videos and miss Oregon . Beautiful state but what happened . Oregon & Washington have more than it’s fair share of lunatics .

When the weather is cold engines flood easier. You might try choking for the first one or two pulls then turn the choke off. If it doesn’t start by the third or fourth pull you can open the throttle all the way to get more air into the engine and pull a couple more times. if that doesn’t work, then you can always remove the spark plug, pull the rope three to four more times, which usually will clear out all of the extra gas, then reinstall the spark plug.

That sawdust pile next to the LT 40 was pretty big this time, I’m surprised you don’t have a conveyor running along side elevated at the end so you could load a Gator, pick-up, or even better, a dump trailer so you wouldn’t have to scoop any sawdust at all. Cold engines get stiff to turn over as Jade demonstrated, one of the downsides of winter !. That got me wondering if you happen to know what viscosity of oil is used in the various engines on the yard and if a lower viscosity oil is made use of for the winter months. I would suggest having some cans of starting fluid on hand and while some reading this may freak out at that idea it is generally perfectly fine to use on gasoline engines without causing any issues or damage, its on diesel engines where one has to be careful or engine damage can result by using it incorrectly. I've had to make use of starting fluid on gasoline engines on grain augers for example in colder weather or generators and and vehicles for that matter and it certainly makes that difference and fires up ( prevents you from screwing up your day ) , look at it as giving your engine a drink of strong coffee to give it that kick start it needed !

Just a suggestion, use a "mep" torch, hardware store torch, warm up the carb and side of the engine block and those small engines will start up. Just don't get the flame too close to the gas tank or any fuel leaks. Point is, to warm things up as a "preheat".

Since it has gotten colder up north where you are you should be using winter blend gas, if you still have gas that was bought in the summer months it may cause a problem with small engines, I agree with one other comment to use high octane rating and it needs to be alcohol free. all I have been able to find in N Georgia is 90 octaine alcohol free and it works well in my small engine equipment. May still be able to get some aircraft gas which racers use since it is 100 octane. Enjoy your show keep up the good work.
