Lume Cube Drone Kit Unbox, Initial Impressions - led light review dji

Lume Cube Drone Kit -
I reached out to Lume Cube a little while back about getting their Lume Cube Drone Kit ($179) to do an evaluation on the channel and they were nice enough to send a set over. Quick note, I am not being paid, these were provided by Lume Cube, any links in here are not affiliate links and I am not beingn compensated.
Quick unboxing today, initial thoughts, with more videos to come.
Overall the build quality is outstanding on the Cubes. They are incredibly bright:
1500 Lumens
20 min - 2 hour runtime
Waterproof
Bluetooth controlled (really nice app)
and very inexpensive for what they are!
I am impressed so far and see a lot of uses for these. Stay tuned as we dig in more!

Hey Bill, funny I was just looking into them. I saw them on another channel and really liked them. They can be used for so many things. They are small enough to put in ur pocket or backpack, but yet use them on the drone when u fly those low light hours. I can see them coming in handy on a hike or bike ride with the drone is in follow me mode just as its getting dark. Keep us posted on how the work for u and how long they last in use! thanks for the videos!

Bill, Very interesting. If you get a chance, try using the phantom 4 pro to look UP at something...and perhaps you could use the lume cube to illuminate it...I'm thinking of looking up at the underneath of a bridge structure, or a tree.

Tom Talley you would see the props that way on any Phantom.

Interesting product and great review. With 1/4-20 threads, you could mount a small camera on each side of the drone.

With the strobe flashing and pointing backwards, they would be awesome to keep your drone in view on a sunny day or if you were to inadvertently fly further than the recommended 500m....

Bill, great review! I checked their site for maximum range to control the cubes but found nothing. Do you know how far away the cubes can be turned on and off when on a drone? I have a Phantom 4 and could use the forward red marker lights to control the cubes but that would probably require low impedance circuitry to interface them. Any idea?

I've just got one, waiting for a couple of mounts to attach to my Osmo. Never thought about putting them on my P4 for indoor/low light drone footage. Will look in to that

Easy lighting in small areas for filming. Easy to hide from the shot. I would also mount them on my Phantom 4 or Osmo+ like mentioned below! I love these things. I may look into getting some!

Hey Bill, first off keep up the great work! I'm not sure if you covered this or not, but under FAA Part 107 there is a provision for legally flying a drone up to 30 minutes passed sunset, or up to 30 minutes before sunrise (civil twilight) IF you have "anti-collision" lighting on the drone that is visible up to 3 miles away. Do you think these cubes would fulfill that requirement?

Thanks for showing this. But my experience with video lights is that you need to be fairly close to the subject. There is a fair amount of light fall off as the distance gets greater. I guess drone pilots are making big bucks inspecting oil rigs and big containers, but I don't see much use for them. At a wedding, you would have to get fairly close and use prop guards. Good night shots just use the city lights. I just don't see much practical use, but I would be glad to see something....

Well, now I bought them, and waiting for a good use. I reasoned they can be used with my DSLR. Also, the drone can shine from above on something, while shooting the subject with a DSLR. Who knows, I might get that photo opportunity for a night shot no one else can get....

Bill, do you think flying the drone during the day with the cubes perhaps blinking or strobing, would allow it to be seen farther out? To me that would be helpful. Also, what about weight and how it would affect battery/flying time?

+jogforfitness they are about 110g - likely will affect flight time some, I will test but i am expecting only a slight change in flight behavior.

I have this exact kit. Played around with it a few times with a P4 when first purchased but knew I could use them in different ways. Negatives: -on P4 this is fairly useless, not because it moves around on the P4 or affects flight or controllability of the P4, but because these lights produce a fairly narrow beam. IMO they're not worth ~$200 for light painting. -cubes won't sync as flash with any camera except with smartphone through app Pros/Uses for Me: -if you mount them through 1/4" thread on a small tripod, you can use them for foreground illumination for night photography -using 1/4" thread on a handrig, you can snorkel with them to illuminate subjects like people, fish, reefs a few feet of water -with a DIY diffuser, you can use these cubes for run-gun videography where weight/size are important to optimize, like backpacking. Also, at level 6, lume cubes last 30 mins but can be charged externally via USB if you have them sitting on a tripod for say timelapse photography. I've used them at level 6 on an external USB powerbank for ~5hrs. So, basically, I with a chance to do it again, I would bought one or two cubes but not this kit.
