@@badasscrusader Depends on the iteration. Sometimes they give them speed and dex buffs, improved detection, bonus accuracy, etc.. Really just depends on the world building. As for them as a civilization, we do have some variety normally. Sure we have the woodland elves, but we also have the high elves that make a bunch of cool shit that lasts for thousands of years. Same with the dwarves. Humans are typically the most boring race simply because they are always fighting something, then they start losing, then the protag (you) is suppose to come in and basically do everything for them. Granted this isn’t every setting, but Elder Scrolls is like this, WoW is pretty much like this, frickin Lord of the Rings humans were saved by Hobbits (tbf though it was actually a cool story), and lets not forget literally every fantasy game ever. The only worlds where humans aren’t portrayed as the weakest little incompetent cowards who only survived through sheer numbers alone are Warhammer and Monster Hunter (and I’m sure a few more, but those are the only ones I can think of with other intelligent races in them).

And the only "Tieflings are mandatory" players I've met are 20-year-old edgelord college students. Tieflings CAN be interesting to play...but rarely are, because of who plays them....

Humans have always been powerful in D&D. Wahhh. Elves have Arcane Archer. Wahhh. Teiflings are mysterious, like me. Wahhh. Ignoring Grognard D&D, humans have been incredibly powerful. Sure, they didn't get stat bonuses. They didn't take a hit to their stats in 3.X either, when other races had to. They also get a bonus feat. Just for being human. Now, that didn't go too far in 3.X, because Strongheart Halflings also got it, however in 5e, they're the only one (that I can remember), who starts with one. Everyone else has to give up stat points to get one. Humans? Free. Just a single feat can make a build do something ridiculous in 5e. I can still stomach it, since it since it is just watered down 3.X, but with some holes in the rules to make some interesting stuff. And no, the 3 Mile Cat doesn't count as even remotely interesting.

Technically that's a variant rule for humans in 5e: +1 feat, +1 proficiency, and +1 to two stats. Normal humans get +1 to every stat.

My last D&D 5e character was a human fighter. Human so I could use the +1 to every stat with point buy to start with 15/14/14/14/14/9 stats and then take Heavy Armor Master feat at 4 to round out my stat mods to +3/+2/+2/+2/+2/-1. Great Weapon Fighting. Eldritch Knight subclass. At 6 I took the Sharpshooter feat. At 8 I took the Healer feat. His name was Jack Ariamis, the 3rd son of a Waterdeep noble. And he was very fun to play.

Nah my favorite is still dwarf commoner Mage might be the most generally broken but both of the Dwarf origins have the most flavor when you finally go back IMO. I still default to human noble for most playthroughs though. The idea of a dwarf getting it on with Morrigan is too hilarious to actually go through with.
