@@100carlosfermin That's a pattern I've noticed about the writing of this show in general. Having one character do something that makes them look either bad or shallow, and then recontextualizing it to flip it around. One example is emperor Belos' treatment of Lillith when she was head of his coven, specifically his "betrayal" where he promised to heal Eda once captured, only to then immediately go back on his word. When Young blood, old souls first aired, I watched a review of it where the reviewer said something like: "Having a character uphold their end of the deal when they don't have to is always more interesting than not." Obviously, Elsewhere and elsewhen recontextualized this moment to where it makes sense and doesn't even make the emperor's character more shallow, quite the opposite: It adds context and depth to him in hindsight, rather than taking it away. The other instance of course is Hooty and what he did at the end of this one. Up 'till Oh Titan, where art thou, that was the one thing that soured the image of him in an episode which otherwise made him pretty likable, but afterwards, well, we all know what happened. This is genious writing, disguised at first glance as bad or mediocre writing. Dana Terrace and everyone else knew exactly what they were doing.

Dana and her crew were like, "Let's disguise a character development party, and making Lumity fully canon underneath a Hooty episode that everyone will think is filler going in. They'll never see it coming." Seriously, this episode will go down in history, not only for how awesome it is, but for the progress it made in normalizing LGBTQ content in animation.

What to say, what to say. The Tunnel of Love scene is painful in the best way because you can see how much Amity is loving these gestures, but Luz is just too embarrassed to even realize. Considering her musing of being made fun of *again,* you know that means this happened when she confessed to a crush before, which pretty much traumatized her to a point she's afraid to try again without it being *perfect.* I think a lot of romantic relationships in media are cliche and undeveloped, but what I love here is that theirs is specifically *NOT* perfect. It happens under the most ridiculous circumstances, and that awkwardness doesn't just go away, they're still really shy and scared of how big and new it is.

@TherealRNOwwfpooh Жыл бұрын
@@marcelyuzuki6376 You just contradicted yourself. In saying she didn't want Amity to think the same as those who made fun of her back in our human realm, Luz basically confirmed that she did have crushes on other girls before (she is canonically bisexual), but when she opened herself up to these potential love interests, they callously patronized her & made her feel undeserving of affection. In fact, one of these girls shows up when Luz finally goes back to human school when the Hex Squad as well as - along with some unwanted leftovers of the Emperor's goop monster form - found themselves in the human realm (This was after the portal door to the demon realm had closed right around the time that the literal child trickster god The Collector was coming down from his/their location within the crown of the fallen Titan which comprises the Boiling Isles to 'play' with King, who had just recently found out in "Oh Titan, Wherefore Art Thou" that he, himself, is not just a young Titan, but that he's actually the son of the Boiling Isles Titan, who is actually still alive [as proven by his still beating heart] but he's is somehow trapped inside of the In Between space between multiple realities, however once goop monster Belos takes possession of his heart, King's gender fluid dad has to give up his own life so Luz can have all of his power to come back from getting killed herself to finally defeat Belos for good). At school, Luz stumbles across this particular girl & her two followers (they're a direct parallel to the elitist "Brat Pack"/"Mean Girl" group in the demon realm that Amity was an unwitting part of until she patched things up with Willow as a side effect of her budding romance with Luz), the human girl equivalent to Boscha begins making fun of Luz before reminding her two friends about how Luz "used to have a crush on me", only to be suddenly upstaged when Amity herself shows up & openly kisses a flustered Luz right in front of the three of them! Seeing that weirdo Luz had finally found herself a stable girlfriend left the human version of Boscha utterly confused as to what just happened, meanwhile the first of her two friends unashamedly admits to shipping LUMITY, meanwhile the second one answers her question regarding what just happened by telling her, "Looks like you just got served, girl."

@TherealRNOwwfpooh
@TherealRNOwwfpooh Жыл бұрын
@@tobsonasanya4765 Yes, but it is a comic that would be plausible considering that there's a literal time skip in the finale and we don't really see Luz go back to humankind again after Belos's defeat until the time skip happens & there's photos of various moments the Hex Squad, Vee, Masha, and Camilla have had together pinned to Luz's wall as she's seen preparing for college. So, it's highly likely the situation in that particular comic actually happened as a glaring middle finger to the bigoted homophobes of the world, since Dana Terrace herself confirmed that homophobia doesn't exist on the Boiling Isles (although xenophobia [since Luz was an illegal alien as a displaced human trying to live out her witch girl fantasy, since Luz wasn't a natively born witch like Amity is] might, given the reasoning for Odalia not wanting her daughter to date Luz was because Luz is natively human, she's openly against Emperor Belos whom the Blights were providing Abomination ammunition to, and Odalia in particular would clearly sell out her family completely if it meant she alone kept a high status position of power) like it sadly does in our real world that _The Owl House_ human realm is supposed to represent.

What you have to realize is that last memory Eda experiences isn't *her* memory...it's the Owl Beast's! And that scroll is the one Lilith found at the Night Market. Hooty gets *so* close to being helpful...then ruins it at the last second.

26:16 - One of the cool things ppl seem to miss about Eda's dream is when we swap over to the perspective of the Owl beast and how the curse came to be. The owl beast was turned into a scroll, but had a life as an independent creature before that. The scroll washed up on the shore, got picked up by trash collector man and was sold to Lilith on at the night market.

I love the juxtaposition of this episode, where Luz fears Amity will reject her, with the Grom episode last season, where Amity's greatest fear was Luz rejecting her. (And yeah, I'm sure Luz was bullied pretty relentlessly back in CT. More evidence of that in ep. 10.)
@TherealRNOwwfpooh

And Luz destroying the tunnel of love (thinking "Amity's too cool for this" & that it embarrassed the both of them when Amity's strong blushing indicated that she was actually enjoying all of the sappy stuff Hooty did for them) led to Amity being sad (reusing the same sad face she had when Grom pretended to be a silhouetted Luz rejecting her by ripping her invitation note), thinking that Luz was actively rejecting the possibility of them dating. Once she voiced this aloud ("Us...dating? That's stupid, right?"), to quote a famous internet saying, "it was then that Luz realized she f--ed up", until she finally found the courage to ask Amity out & LUMITY became canon!

This episode was so good for so many reasons, especially in terms of Eda's dream 9:13 with the owl curse being an allegory for disability & mental illness, this scene right here is supposed to be representative of a trigger (not necessarily for Eda, but as we see later, it's a tigger for the Owl Beast) and then at 10:34 is where we see part of the Owl Beast's life, where it was hunted down with flares that were similar to the ones Dell (Eda's dad) used, and when that hunter (keep that character in mind) "caught" the Owl Beast, it was turned into a scroll: the same exact scroll that had the curse that Lilith used on Eda, which means Lilith unknowingly bound the Owl Beast within Eda, thereby siphoning her magic 11:05 And there's some deep symbolism with the red thread. East Asian cultures believe in the Red threat of Fate everyone has a red thread that's wrapped around our ankles and leads to the person we're destined to meet regardless of time/place (this thread is sometimes called called the Red Thread of Marriage, as it refers to couple's that are destined to be with in a "one true love" situation) Some other stuff worth mentioning: 3:59 Hooty's chart has a pokémon reference (pocket monsters) 5:43 Tiny Nose! .........just Tiny Nose in general lol 19:32 idk if you noticed, but the colors in the background are supposed to be the arrangement of the bisexual flag. Dana Terrace and the crew always hides those colors throughout the series too (especially throughout season 2) 20:00 keep in mind this one part of the notes that wonders about what's "in-between" the human and demon realms... the notes are worth reading independently 21:17 owl pellet. you were thinking owl pellet

I don’t think a lot of people pick up on the detail that the noisemaker pop (and stars/sparkles?) was a trigger for the owl beast. But thank you for clearing that up further.

That thought about identity and thinking about how others might perceive one is really interesting. I would say with modern social media most people make themselves object of the judgement of others and thus become slaves to the opinions of not just their direct peer group but to plenty a stranger on the internet as well.

King mentioned it actually. Owls (both real and Hooty) hack up "Owl Pellets." I think it was the one thing I could dissect in high school, and it actually was interesting and cool because we could in fact see distinct skeletons of the Owl's diet; such as small rodents. Compared to the woeful success of worms and frogs (although the frog was a little bit cool), that was one of my better days of biology class.😅

I think seeing someone accept themselves for all that they are in the metaphor of a harpy, chimera, or something that is just so amazing and cool really is the imagery people need to feel that sense of self-love and validation that they can live life with pride just as they are. It's a especially true for those who are not as fortunate to be surrounded by a healthy and supportive group of people who encourage them to reach that point in life where they can embrace themselves.

Eda's whole dream sequence is easily one of my favourite things in the show. After this episode I was also speculating about a Harpy Lilith, thanks for validating me. I feel like, in a similar way to how Eda had to confront her trauma caused by the curse and accept it as part of herself, Lilith would have to do a lot of work on forgiving herself for cursing Eda in the first place. To Eda, the curse is a misfortune she was stuck with out of nowhere (and she went most of her life not even knowing where it came from!), but to Lilith it represents the biggest mistake of her entire life. I really wonder what kind of interaction she would have with the beast because of that, knowing it's her own fault they're in this situation.

This episode is really significant for what I think are obvious reasons. Significant for all the character development, for Luz and Amity as a couple and for queer representation in general. They have such a great and wholesome relationship, and seeing them become a couple only halfway through the series is a pretty big deal because as Kenny said it's not something you see very often especially for queer couples. For me it matters so much more getting to see them as an onscreen couple and shows the sincerity and effort that the Owl team put into writing a well developed queer relationship. And it is very well developed, but it's also not dragged out either. Like Montana mentioned there is the concern that they could have dragged out the will they wont they and I'm also glad that they didn't. It's all very well paced, not too fast but not rushed either. It's also incredible how this episode manages to weave together what is essentially 3 different stories in a really effective way that doesn't feel rushed at all, using Hooty as the glue that holds it all together. We get Lumity becoming an actual canon couple, Eda making peace with the Owl Curse and getting her Harpy form, King learning more about himself and getting new powers, and Hooty being funny all in one episode. As much as I want to talk about my favourite couple, I suppose I'll go chronologically and start with Hooty's letter to Lilith. This is a perfect set up for the episode, with Hooty the Owl House himself feeling a little let out of the Owl families lives with all the wild stuff that's been happening in season 2 and going to his best friend Lilith for comfort. Even if it hasn't been too long, it's hard not to miss Lilith and it's nice to hear from her again which just goes to show how well they managed to develop her after she left the Emperor's Coven. She's able to reassure Hooty that he has arguably the most important job of being the Owl House himself, which is a sweet moment and motivates him to help each of the Owl family with their own personal problems they've been dealing with the past few episodes. I also love Montana's observation of Hooty being a supportive relative who's heart is in the right place but keeps messing everything up. I didn't think of him like that before but I think I will from now on because it fits perfectly. To start off with we have King, who is dealing with a case of Demon puberty while also not really knowing what he is. Hooty decides to do some tests to figure what type of demon King is so that King can go through some self discovery and Hooty can know how exactly to help. This section has a lot of jokes and is really funny, even has and Evangelion reference on King's musical note shirt but ends on a genuinely emotional note. So some interesting lore that is dropped here and something that makes King really interesting is that he clearly doesn't fall under any established category of demon. We don't know how, but he is special in some way. As upsetting as it might be for King in not being able to find out more about himself, Hooty tries to comfort him by saying that they don't really need to know what he is and the rest of Owl family will love him no matter what. Although Hooty clearly means well here, this is when we get to King's real problem. Deep down, King just wants his dad and feels abandoned by his biological family. It's in this rush of emotion however that King gets his new power and whatever King is it seems that they have a sonic yell. This new discovery is big for King but Hooty feels like he failed because King got upset and breaks down in tears while sliding away. Next up we have Eda, because while Hooty feels like he failed King he figures he can still help the Owl Lady of the house with all the stress she's been under from trying to figure out a way to stop Belos and as of the last episode, a way to rescue Raine which I imagine just put even more stress on her shoulders. And his way of doing this is drugging her with spiked cookies to help her fall asleep. The sleeping nettles however also heighten your dreams which inevitably forces her to confront the Owl beast in her mind. What we get is an emotionally heart retching dream sequence that shows just how much the Owl curse has messed up Eda's life. Her bond with her family was shattered and her romance with Raine was broken all because of something that she can't control. It's tragic and disturbingly realistic with the strain that a mental illness can take on someone's relationships. We also get another interesting bit of a lore from this section with Eda in the Owl Beast form trying to escape a moon faced hunter. We don't know anything else about this person at this point, but something that is worth noting about this part is that it's speculated that this is actually a memory from the Owl Curse itself before it was turned into a curse. Meaning that the Owl Beast was hunted by whoever this Moon Face is before being turned into a curse scroll, being found on the beach and then eventually making their way into Lilith's hands. The section ends with a visually stunning scene of Eda and Owl Curse on the beach, with a red sting connecting them while everything else is in black and white. This is in my opinion the most artistically interesting scene in the whole show. The way it ends with Eda accepting the Curse as a part of herself and how all the colours come in when she does, representing her new perspective and sense of peace is beautiful. Then she even gets her new Harpy form out of it, and what I love about this reveal is that she isn't horrified by it. She loves it and knows how good she looks. It shows how she's fully accepted this part of herself and she's even confident in flaunting it off. It's a great moment of self acceptance, but Hooty thinks he's failed again and that Eda's transformation is a bad thing so he breaks into tears and flies away again. Finally we have the section we've all been waiting for and the one that holds so much importance for so much of the audience. It's Luz trying to navigate her feelings for the girl she's fallen head over heals for. I mean she's also dealing with trying to get the echo mouse to talk but before she can do that she's got to get her feelings for Amity off her chest. When your falling in love, in can be hard to focus on anything else then the person your in love with and Hooty is here to help Luz to open up. By kidnapping Amity, putting her in his basement and sending her and Luz through a tunnel of love he set up. This whole section is both incredibly cute and painful in how realistic it all is with Luz not wanting to embarrass herself in front of the girl she wants to confess her romantic feelings to. But I think my favourite thing about Luz's struggle to ask Amity to be her girlfriend is that while she's really nervous about trying to impress her, what she doesn't realize is that Amity loves that Luz is so dorky. She admires Luz's sincerity and that she's so unapologetically herself. Luz is trying to hide that dorky side of herself but Amity loves Luz for who she is. What makes this even better is that Amity is actually just as dorky as Luz and clearly loves cheesy romance just as much as she does, she's just so used to putting up a stoic front for the sake of an image that wasn't even herself. Something that I find so beautiful about Luz and Amity's relationship is that Luz was able to help Amity to come out her shell and feel more confident in who she really is. They are perfect for each other. But at the end of the section Luz almost throws everything away when she freaks out and destroys the tunnel of love out of embarrassment, making Amity feel like this was some messed up rejection of her feelings. Then Hooty freaks out again, thinking that he's now failed everybody and tries to remove himself from the house. Eda and King come in for the save however, saving both Luz and Amity themselves from falling debris by using their new powers and their relationship when Eda offers Luz some sincere advice. Fun fact about this part too is that when King breaks the debris with his voice, the colours around Luz and Amity are supposed to be the colours of the bi and lesbian pride flags, bi for Luz and lesbian for Amity. It's a much appreciated attention to detail that really shows how much Dana and the Owl crew go the extra mile. In fact something else I think I should note at this point is that most of the more intimate scenes between Luz and Amity have a lot of purple and blue lighting, those are the colours that represent Lumity as a couple. In a similar way, Eda and Raine's intimate scenes often have red and orange lighting because those are Raeda's colours. PLEASE READ REPLY FOR PART 2 because youtube gave me a "returned error" when I tried to post everything as one comment lol.

PART 2. When Eda tells Luz to just go for it and ask Amity out, it feels a lot like when Emira had reassured Amity that her feelings for Luz are natural. Eda is being a supportive mum to her queer kid, and it hits especially hard as a queer person that wishes I had supportive parents growing up. Montana is so right that this should be normal, parents being supportive if they have queer kids should be a given. But this is also why representation will always be really important. Having such a well written queer romance at the forefront of a show like this when I was younger, back when I thought that there was something wrong with me for having a crush on my friend who was also a girl, would have meant the world and it makes me really happy that queer kids growing up now will have stuff like this. And it's so wholesome and adorable too, Luz and Amity really feel like a couple of queer kids trying to navigate their feelings for each other and it's great. Eda takes Hooty and King away so Luz and Amity can have their moment together and Lumity is made an official couple. I have to say that I love how they both ask each other out, which helps their relationship feel more equal and like it isn't conforming to typical hetero gender roles. Also the way Amity holds her shirt, which is something that she always does when she's nervous which is an interesting little detail. And the way they hold hands, the little thumb rub and the way they are both still so nervous around each other is all too adorable and hits so hard with how realistic it is. This scene always makes me cry, getting to see a well developed queer couple at the forefront of a show like this means so much to me and the whole confession scene is so sweet. By the end of this episode we have an actually ground breaking queer couple becoming official with Luz and Amity, Eda overcoming her mental disability metaphor and getting her badass new Harpy form and King getting his new voice powers. And it was all thanks to Hooty. Hooty who was the biggest Lumity shipper all this time. Also he ate King's letter. But three out of four is still pretty good right? This episode is incredible though, for me personally it's my third favourite in the whole show after the series finale and an episode that's in the second half of season 2. It manages to successfully follow up on so many plot points that have been prevalent throughout season 2 with Luz and Amity's growing feelings for each other from episodes 2 and 5, Luz getting more information out of the echo mouse from episode 5, Eda and Raine's relationship established in episode 7, Eda's acceptance of the Owl curse from episode 4, King's self discovery and missing dad from episode 3. And now we have an entire second half of the series to see how Luz and Amity actually function as an onscreen couple which is why establishing a queer relationship in the middle of a show instead of at the end means so much more. This episode is perfection and I'm excited to see you reactions to how everything develops after all of that just happened.
