This small lens is wonderful. I bought it for my summer trip to London with my son. With 14 - 140 on my G80 and the 12 - 32 in my pocket and no camera bag, I covered all my needs for city/street photos. The difference between 14mm and 12mm wide angle is important in a big city.

It's a great little lens, and for the tiny weight, extremely well made. Ideally it would be good to have a little more zoom at the zoom end but it is still good for most purposes. It will produce a reasonable amount of Bokeh for portraits if that's what you need, but you have to set the camera up very carefully to achieve it.

A very good overview of a great little lens. I owned one with a GM1 and sold both (what a fool...!), and missed it as a tiny lens to have on any Lumix. Happily, they are are amazing value secondhand, so picked up another one from a dealer (inc warranty) for just £94, and its the 'better' metal mount version too. The sharpness is great, the zoom range really useful, and coupled with a Lumix 42.5mm f1.7, you've got a lens combo' outfit so small and light, you'll hardly know you've got them. Buy one!

The 14-45mm is a very nice lens though not as small as the 12-32mm. I think people with all the 14-42mm lenses around forget about this lens which is very cheap secondhand and better I think than the kit Olympus 14-42 lenses though I cannot say as to the Panasonic ones. I wonder if production standards were higher and cost factors less of an issue when this original 14-45mm kit lens was produced. The 14-45mm just seems to pop in a way that really makes me really like it. It is Mega OIS which is noticeably inferior to the new Power OIS which does not need the marketing name fillip and IBIS does a better job on Olympus bodies.

In my case my camera also offers stability so I have something double stable. In the video he speaks about taking a long exposure hand held and it works well. I hope that helps.
@dublbude4 жыл бұрын
@@BoyanLove not trying come at you, simply informing, so you can understand your camera a little better. My friend, unfortunately the gx7 doesnt have the dual IS feature, yes the body has a stabilized sensor (2 axis system), and yes the lens has OIS. When a Panasonic Lumix lens, with Stabilization is placed on the gx7, the Lens Stabilization will be active, and the IBIS will deactivated (automatic), as the lens Stabilization is more effective then this old style IBIS on the GX7. On Pansonic lenses, where there is an On/off switch, if you have the switch to off, the IBIS will then be active on the gx7. All Olympus, and Pansonic lenses without Stabilization will have active IBIS on the gx7. On the GX8 (4 axis), they introduced the dual IS function for still photography only. On gx85, g85 generation ( 5 axis IBIS, current sytem) Panasonic added the capability of the dual IS feature in video. The smaller lines gx850, gf10, do not have stabilization and will use lens OIS when applicable.
@dublbude4 жыл бұрын
That being said if you ever want to upgrade from the gx7, and love the handling, the gx85 is the best natural upgrade, slightly smaller grip, and the EVF doesnt tilt, but you gain crazy improved stabilization, if you think you had DUAL IS on your gx7 (which you dont), you wont believe a camera that actually does! They also removed the AA filter, which sharpened the images a bit more, and the video quality has come a long way. The microphones aren't very good, not sure why?.. Can be had for 350 open box on ebay, and will come with a second copy of this lens for ya, plus a 45-150!

Thanks for this video! It is nice to have a video on a lens that does not cost and arm and a leg. I have this lens and I use it mostly on holiday. It is a practical lens due to the size and weight. F3.5 at 12mm is ok, especially with Dual IS (GX80!) for low light shots. I agree that 32mm at the Tele end is a little bit limiting but... It has a sibling, the 35-100mm f4-5.6 lens. It is also very small (twice the length of the 12-32 closed) and gives great results, one day please do a video on that lens. For enthusiasts there are good alternative to the pro gear.

This is very interesting. I don't know if it's a regional thing or what exactly is going on, but I have this lens in silver - it's nine years old now. This lens can be prone to barrel separation when the glue in the front barrel dries up. This happened to mine and I had to take it apart and re-glue it (!). What was interesting to discover though was that the entire shell was, in fact, made of a very fine aluminium with a poly-carbonate core . Also, mine has a metal bayonet connector - go figure. I am in the UK - and mine came as a kit lens so perhaps the metal construction has something to do with that. All I can say is, I was kind of happy it fell apart in the end. It's a great little lens. It's great to know it comes in a metal guise as well - even if that doesn't stop it falling apart!😄

Optically the images are as good as anything you will get from any zoom at any price; you are just restricted by focal length and aperture but, this lens has few glass elements which means it drips microtones and the images are so alive; not something you will get from a Pro zoom with more than 14 elements. I use this lens when I am travelling on a trip as it takes up no room in my handbag; I get my primes out of my luggage when i get there. It has never failed me. No it doesnt use lots of corrections. I dont use Adobe software so I dont get any of the Lumix corrections, my lenses have to stand up on their own and this doesnt disappoint. Apart from a small amount of barrell distortion at 12mm i never use corrections with this lens. This lens does need a lens hood as, at first, it was unusable as the front elementy kept getting covered by cold cream from my arm and fingers. The item you need is this one JJC LH-37EPII Metal Lens Hood for Panasonic Lumix G Vario 12-32mm ( www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00M7WRB3S/ref=pe_3187911_185740111_TE_item ) and it looks stunning. I leave the hood, which is the classic metal Leica design, in place permanently and use a 58mm pinch cap over the end to protect in my bag. This protects the front element and looks like the collapsible Leica Summicron on my IIIg; it transforms this lens from plug ugly to looking stylish.This lens is now one of my main and favourite lenses and I cant praise it highly enough ;-) Image from my recent show "Dark Paths", done at the 12mm end that convinced me that this lens is special instagram.com/p/BjzjORkASfx/

A true masterpiece of a lens! Great for travel. Paired with by GH5s it is a robust light weight solution for all my travel videography and photography. It will be great if Panasonic release more lens of this caliber giving a bit more range in a pancake size with OIS!

My 12-32 came as the kit on my GX85. It's an excellent performer so long as you don't ask it to do things it wasn't intended for. Do: street photography, wideish landscapes, isolate subjects with wide angle of view, family photos Don't: expect killer bokeh, freeze motion at night, expect an all-in-one super zoom It's very sharp, especially in the middle of the range. I've found some uncorrected distortion at the wide end, and it's best to think of the long end as "long normal" than "short tele." I love how my camera with this lens fits in my pocket like a P&S. It's also easy to throw into a bag or pocket "just in case" when shooting with other lenses, like a tele zoom or portrait lens.

There is mentioning of metal and plastic version of this lens ... on the net, in a comment here. Which type/build material is yours? (You also praise the sharpness, maybe this is revision dependend.) I got 2 offers of the GX80, where both have the 12-32/3.5-... but one additionally with 35-100/4.....

Great review Matti. I got this as a kit lens with one of my m4/3 bodies. I haven't used it much, because I gravitate toward the 20mm f1.7 for street shooting. I agree with most of what you say about it. The biggest thing I dislike is that I have to extend it before using it. I also miss a manual focus ring.

I believe there areafter-market lens hoods available for 37mm. Most, I saw, were rubber fold down types. Don't know what's available in Helsinki but the sources here in the US were; B&H, Amazon, Panasonic and Ebay, as well as others.

I've had this lens for a while and while it's good value, it has a major flaw: The zoom ring becomes lose after months of use. Hundreds of people have the same problem, see internet forums. I glued it and it seems to work fine.
@markcrane85814 жыл бұрын
How did you glue it? What kind of glue?
@anthonyskellern59704 жыл бұрын
@@markcrane8581 Hi Mark - This lens is an absolute delight to use, but yes - this is an issue with the 12-32... What happens is that the outer 'sleeve' of the lens (the bit with the zoom range scale printed on it) has extra stresses imposed on it when collapsing or expanding the lens, and can sometimes become detatched from the main lens barrel, effectively rendering the whole lens useless. It happened to mine (after years of use and thousands of images taken!)... I did fix mine using a workaround I found on the DP Review site - essentially by sticking it on again with double-sided adhesive tape ( I would not recommend glue)... The operation is fairly simple but does require some patience, delicacy and precision. the inside of the sleeve and the outer surfaces of the exposed lens barrel must be cleaned thoroughly of any debris. The tape should be cut to thin strips and positioned evenly round the barrel without covering any of the cutouts in the barrel. You don't need very much tape at all! Finally, the sleeve should be lined up precisely with the back ring of the barrel - (eg if the lens is expanded, the '32' on the sleeve should line up with the white dot on the back ring). Then very carefully, let the sleeve drop back over the barrel - hopefully it will seat against the back ring, and you can squeeze the sleeve a little all the way round to stick it tight... good luck!

They are some lens hoods for this lens on amazon. Please can you review Panasonic 12-60 3.5-5.6? Did you try it?

I have the silver version that has the metal mount. I also have the 12-45 f4 Pro from Olympus which undoubtedly has better quality but the differences are few in terms of image quality and the portability of the 12-32 is incomparable. The only thing I don't like about the 12-32 is that under bright lights it can generate some annoying flares.

I've just purchased this lens second-hand on eBay, waiting for it to come. I have an Olympus OM-D E-M10ii that I just bought about a month ago, with the 14-42 kit lens. It works well, but I was curious how a 12mm angle would come out, as there's a bit of difference between 12 and 14mm. I've heard that this lens is pretty sharp; I'll let you know what I think, when it comes and I get a chance to take some shots.

I have both. I like the compact Lumix 12-32mm and have it on my Olympus PEN PL-8 -- will use the longer Olympus 14-42mm R II lens on the OMD-EM10 mark II camera. I do not have the Oly Pancake version. Here is a tech review on both www.ephotozine.com/article/olympus-m-zuiko-digital-14-42mm-f-3-5-5-6-mkii-lens-review-16914 www.ephotozine.com/article/panasonic-lumix-g-vario-12-32mm-f-3-5-5-6-asph--lens-review-24162/performance I have noticed that Olympus on many of their low end lenses tend to be sharp in the middle with a huge difference towards the sides --- Lumix are a tad more even across. Compared to some other types of cameras / brands, the Oly and Panny have done pretty well about not releasing crap kits, which is a good thing indeed. - Loren

Micke Li för 1 minut sedan (redigerad) Late in to party, but that one is one of the best lensen ive ever had. Sharp, not clinical sharp, but good sharp. None CA what so ever, and thats pure image quality, there. No CA. A kit Zoom that is close to in IQ to a Sony E 35mm and or a 1,8 and Zeiss E mount, even contrast is really good. Its stupendus good. 70 gram of kit zoom, 20mm. What more could one ask fore?

This 12-32 mm kit lens is pretty good to take along for street or travel photography. The metal lens hood from 3rd party manufacturers fits but cut off on the edges esp. 12 mm. It's better not to use the lens hood.

I totally agree as I had the GM1 with this lens and sold it as it did not have the EVF. Well, I bought the GM5 and later had to buy the 12-32 used because it is so good relative to size and weight. This I can pocket any time, with my G9 even with smaller lenses I need a strap of some kind.

@@mattisulanto From what I have read, this lens was initially made with a metal lens mount but this was changed to plastic later on during production. Checking the sites of used equipment dealers in the UK, it does seem that the metal mount versions only come up for sale occasionally. No idea if there are any other differences between metal and plastic mount versions, and there seems to be very little, or no, information from Panasonic on the change in mount material

This is my most used lens. I have two. I keep one on my Olympus PM2 as my carry about camera. I keep another in my kit for my Pen F. At first I was worried about the dual IS with different brands but I can't find any problems with either lens. Its amazingly sharp and contrasty. I like it better than Oly's 14-42 which is also a pretty darn sharp kit lens. However, I ilke the handling and size of this lens and prefer the extension to 12 mm. I recommend the Lumix 25mm if you need to have just one fast prime in your kit.

This lens is nuts, it could work in low light too despite preceived a bit slow. The versatility is unparalleled I don't feel like getting prime for m43 And sharpness is great, it resolves 16 MP very well wide open. Flare resistance is meh, but it's enough, very enough for me.
