Short answer is: I use "Multiple" metering mode 99.999% of the time. Hope that helps get you started. I think it was a good idea to explain stops as you have done here. In the olden days of film ,we who were photographers, used the term 'f-stop' interchangeably as a measure of aperture and shutter speed. The movie industry more specifically used 'f-stop' for aperture.

1:22 After your explanation about stops in image stabilization I still had to think about it for a bit. If you had added something like the following it would have been immediately clear: 'faster shutter speed gives you a sharper image when hand holding, but this comes at the expense of the amount/stops of light entering the camera. Image stabilization also gives you a sharper image when hand holding but without costing an equivalent amount/stops of light, and that's why it makes sense to talk about stops when talking about image stabilization.' But to be fair I have been wondering for a long time why people were using the term stops when talking about image stabilization and this was the first time that I was able to figure it out with the help of your explanation.

The IBIS in the camera is amazing. I've been taking photos of the river and little water falls near me at upto 1sec, so we see the water in full motuon and the solid objects around it such as a bridge or trees are sharp and still. It also means i don't always need to take the tripod out :)

Great detailed explanation of the DUAL IS for the photos. The video stabilization on the G9 is amazing. With HS 4K video (slow mo), and digital stabilization, it's like hand held gimbal slow motion right out the camera. I was amazed that the digital stabilizaiton did not degrade the image quality in 4K, and the slow motion made the video smooth.

I'm loving these videos for the G9 - thanks for all your hard work!! Love it! I have also found that in certain situations - if your camera is stabilized (i.e. on a tripod) - OIS needs to be off. The camera seems to try and stabilize the image when it's fixed - making the image blurry - it's so weird.

Thank you for watching! Yes, you're right about keeping it turned off when you using a tripod. I've seen this many times when working with my students. I have a video about tripods where I go over that, and I thought I mentioned it in this video too. It's because the gyroscope that does the stabilization needs to be moving in order to work. I am new to G9, I found that when I put my 12-40 f2.8 Olympus lens on G9, the focal length menu is deactivated- is it set automatically or not detected or does not allow Olympus lens to set focal length

Check your camera manual. Page 19 of the English pdf has information about Non-Lumix lenses. If you can't find it, search for: About the lens in the pdf.

A very nice video on image stabilization with the G9. However, i would like to clarify one comment you made. You said that your 35-100mm lens had an equivalent focal length of 70-200mm in terms of a full frame camera. Actually, that is not correct. The focal length of a lens never changes unlike DOF, for example, regardless of the sensor size. If the focal length changed then we could not have photography because f-stops (which have a relationship between aperture and focal length) would vary between lenses. F8, for example would not be f8 with every camera if the focal length changes. It is proper to say the your 35-100mm lens has an equivalent Angle of View (AOV) as a full frame 70-200mm lens. I know this is a technical point, but I think it is worth noting. BTW, I am a subscriber and enjoy your videos.

Definitely worth testing. I haven’t noticed any difference. I’ve also heard that with some newer lenses, it’s not an issue. I suggest: Read the documentation that comes with your lens for best results.

Hello Joy! I just did some new tests with video and photos. When I'm using a super telephoto like the 100-400mm on a Monopod, and zoomed in close, I find that keeping OIS "ON" (on the lens) helps with stability in video capture. But I still do jitter a bit even with a monopod. If I can brace my body against a tree, I have better results. I probably should use a tripod when zoomed fully out to 400mm. Having said that, with photos I don't need as much stabilization as long as I use a fast enough shutter speed, like at least 1/1000s with this long lens. It also depends on how tired I am, how windy it is, and the air temperature. Cold days have me shivering a lot more than warm days. So yes you should test before shooting, especially if you're shooting video. Thanks for the question!

I always hear this camera advertised as 6.5 stops - and it just isn't! It's _maybe_ 6.5 with Dual IS. The in-body-image-stabilisation seems more like 4 stops. I've compared my Olympus EM5 mk2 (rated at 5 stops IBIS) at 300m (no stabilisation in the lens) with the G9 and the Olympus is more stable. Where the G9 keeps a reasonably steady frame it is unable to flatten out the 'twitches' that the Olympus manages to smoother. On the "1/focal-length" rule, do you need to halve that speed that as it's a 2x crop sensor? i.e. 25mm lens handheld has a slowest shutter speed of 1/50s (without IBIS and without too much coffee). Another question: for 5 stops of stabilisation (to make the numbers easier), can the handheld slowest shutter speed be 2^5 (64) times slower? eg. at 30mm will the un-assisted speed of 1/60s (assuming multiple for 2x crop) become assisted to 64 x 1/60s, or just over a second? Thanks!

Yes, I think the marketing people are adding up everything to get to 6.5 stops. But let's focus more on practical matters. I typically use a faster shutter speed than the minimum, just in case.... But I know that I can't personally hand hold a camera with a normal or wide angle lens much slower than 1/60second. And with a longer lens I'm not going under 1/200second. That's me. You will have to do your own tests. So don't miss the point here. It's not about what the numbers are, and how many stops the marketers say, it's about keeping your camera still when you don't have a tripod or monopod around.

Ciao Antonio, I will have to reply in English. I do not have a problem with Brightness in my videos on the G100. I think your exposure is set up wrong. And it definitely will not be a problem with the 15mm f1.7 lens. It has nothing to do with the camera. You need to choose the right exposure settings. Maybe you accidently have your 15mm lens set to f16 or something. Keep working on it. Also the G9 is a great camera. Many more options and settings than the G100, plus it's bigger and heavier. Your 15mm lens will be great with it too. The G9 is my favourite Lumix camera. So keep working on your settings for the G100. Try using P mode in the video mode. Should work great. Do some tests outdoors in daylight. That is a good place to start. Make sure your Exposure Compensation (+/-) is also at 0. Make sure it's not to -3 or something like that. That would make it dark. Hi Rick, That's something I encourage you to test for yourself. But yes, short focal length lenses don't really need much stabilization. But if you've had too much coffee or have tremors then you definitely want to keep your shutter speed at 1/focal length at the minimum. Stabilization is more important in the long lenses like the 100-300 or 100-400mm.

Hi Rick, I think you could set up the IBIS on the G9 and you will be okay with a prime, as long as it's not too long, say 100mm or less. But you can test longer of course. I do notice without OIS engaged on my long zoom lenses that I really get camera shake and it's nearly impossible for me to hand hold, especially if I'm zoomed into 300mm or 400mm. Of course the excitement of the bird on the other end of the lens does contribute to that shaking too. ;) Otherwise you could try a monopod, which I have done for stationary owls, but that is something extra to carry. And I'm all about travelling light these days. Once you get out and about again, I'm sure you'll find your groove. All the best with your health.

Hi Rick, I typically print all my photos at a professional photo lab on silver based paper. I found it too expensive to do the upkeep on a digital inkjet printer as I don't print very much.

If you use a lens or compatible lens that also has built in stabilization you can get 5-axis hybrid stabilization in the Lumix G9 and/or Lens + Body. And yes it works for video too. See page 145 of the expanded camera manual (pdf) for all the details (link to pdf in video description)

Something I picked up from watching another KZbinr is to remember that whilst you can hand hold a long lens with IS at a lower shutter speed, bear in mind if you are photographing wildlife, they still move so you still need a fast shutter speed. Seems obvious but whilst I can get a decent shot of a bit of scenery with a 400mm lens at 1/125, a bird is quite likely to be moving so a faster shutter speed is needed. So, I’ve been going to much higher ISO settings to allow me to have a faster shutter speed to get sharper bird photos. Now I’m going to turn IS off on my lens when I’m on a tripod, no I didn’t read the manual :-) should I also turn it off in the camera, it’s a G9?

Hey Steve, From page 148 of the pdf owner's manual: "It is recommended to disable the stabilizer when using a tripod." It also has a listing of all possible scenarios of when and when 'not' to use the stabilizer, including "moving subjects, and long zoom." Hope that helps.

When using the G9 and trying out the E-Stabilisation (Video) and I.S. Lock (Video), with the lens I.O.S. turned off, there doesn't appear to be any difference in the stabilisation in either stills or video, whether these are ON or OFF. (There is a big difference when the lens O.I.S. is turned on) Am I missing something? And are these just for Video as their bracketed name suggests? Thanks.

Great question! Use your mobile phone with the Lumix Sync app or the Panasonic Image App. Both work great for using as a remote (you can change camera settings too) as well as a shutter release for both photos and videos. The Lumix Sync is newer and a bit easier to set up. But I've used both. You can connect via WiFi or Bluetooth, and the camera creates it's own wifi connection even in the middle of nowhere - so you don't need wifi to connect. Super easy! I often leave my camera set up outdoors for birding and I sit in the house watching for some action on my phone and shoot when the action is happening outside.

Hi Mike, I generally leave the body stabilization on the normal setting, but I'm not doing much tripod shooting right now. I usually turn it "off" for the lens unless working handheld in very slow shutter speeds. I suggest you do some tests of the in-body-IS (with a compatible lens) and see how it goes for you. I'm going to do some tests too. Thanks for asking your question. And yes, I'm really enjoying the G9, but still so much to learn!

Yes, I think it will, but as always I say test it out. If your subject is moving "at all" it may negate the effects of any IBIS or Len IS. So use for indoor very still life is the best subject to test out on. Old churches, or any kind of interior architecture, or landscapes without people in the shots on a windless day, are good subjects to test on.

Hi Marlene, Hope your good and well. I have a question about my G9. Can you switch Off the I.S in the body for taken stills. I know you can switch it of on the lens, if your lens has a switch, but in the menu it only lets you switch off I.S for video and not for stills. For stills in the menu is gives 2 options, full I.S and another for panning, which has a Hand and Arrow on it, but not Off option. On my GX80 is has an option to switch off but not on the G9 ? I'm losing sleep, lol. Many Thanks

If you have a lens with a switch to turn the I.S off/on there will no option in the menu to switch off the I.S because there is the switch on the lens that will turn off all the I.S in the lens and body. If you fit a lens without a switch that dont have I.S within the lens, you can then go to the menu and it will then give you an option to switch off I.S. in the body. Hope this all makes sense. I will sleep tonight.

Hi Marlene. Great video as always... Just a couple of questions. When considering shutter speed with the G9 is the recommendation 1 over the focal length or 1 over the equivalent 35mm field of view? Also when I use a vintage lens the camera requests the focal length of the lens which I assume is in part for image stabilisation purposes. So for a 50mm lens should I enter 50mm or 100mm?

As I said in the video, do your own tests. How well you can handhold will become apparent when you see your photos. I do have a general rule for myself for shorter focal length lenses, and that is I try to stay above 1/60second unless using some sort of image stabilization in the lens or the camera body. Using the G9 you'll likely be able to use a slower shutter speed because of the IBIS. But please, test it. That is always the best approach.

Not using IOS on a tripod...perhaps this causes some of the Lumix focus complaints... Panasonic Lumix App only loads onto phones with a 4k camera....Image Transfere via SD card reader plugged to phone, with appropriate operating app is quicker, faster, easier..and does not drain phone battery....for image/video transfer its superior. F stops apparently do not transmit light as stop suggests...T stops measure light at film/sensor face ...F stops are a calculated hyperthetical number based on glass element diameter...apparently can have almost a stop less light...depending if close-up or infinity...and number of optical elements ..F stops do not represent light falling onto sensor...But do help to sell lenses. Here UK used S5 and some S1(almost unused) are selling about 30% above used mint G9..Wonder what created trends ...fashion??

Great question! And I don't know the answer off the top of my head, but I say test it out. Personally I probably would turn off the stabilization when using a monopod, especially those ones with the little baby legs. If you are a Canon user, it's apparent very early if the stabilizer is on and causing focus problems. Let me know how it goes. If I find out the answer in the meantime I'll get back to you! If you are a Lumix G9 user, go to page 145-146 of the pdf owner's manual. (The big one). It lists all the possible scenarios of when to use and not use the stabilization as well as all the directional variations of it. And if you are panning your subject, there may be value in keeping it on while using a monopod. But it definitely says it's not recommended to use stabilization with a tripod. Stick with Plan A -- test it for your exact shooting conditions. This is something I recommend for every new camera function/feature that I haven't used before.

A bit disappointed you didn't actually explain the G9 settings for this. You didn't explain the operation modes, E-Stabilization (video), and IS Lock (video).

But if you mean "see" then if you playback your video, bring up the display (on the back of the camera) and you will see the ISO that was used. You'll also see other settings, depending on the camera used.

This hurts my soul on so many levels. Why can/does a baby gopro get it so right but a real camera cannot compete in the stabilization department at any price level? Literally, the more money you spend the worse it gets! It does not compute to my way of thinking. I want something I can walk around with and I want better than a gopro, but the more I spend the less I can walk. It's annoying to say the least! Perhaps I just need a better gopro?

Good points! Yes, very annoying. I think we need to look to the pro video shooters for this answer. They are always rigged up with stabilizers. Maybe a gimbal for your camera, or a DJI Osmo on your mobile phone would work for you. And it would also give you something to hold onto. Hand holding a camera and walking rarely looks great anyhow, even with a stabilized camera. If you find something that works let me know! Happy New Year.
