I shoot in manual focus pretty much 99% of the time however, decided to do a small session the other day with sigma 30mm f1.4 and at f.4 at 60p AF did extremely well on my g9. I need to shoot more in AF now that I see how good the 30mm did. After watching your video I'm definitely considering the 16mm for gimbal work. Thanks bro.

OG manual focus for life! If you keep making your Panasonics try to autofocus it will just hurt their feelings and break your heart. If I need autofocus I just let my little Sony a6400 do the job, you just don't have to worry, fiddle around with settings, just point and shoot, lol. A manually focused GH5 is a happy GH5. You managed to squeeze some nice images out of it though!
@StoryDrivenThomas

Hi Randy, I love that line "A manually focused GH5 is a happy GH5"! I feel the same way. As I mentioned in the video, I only need auto-focus for the one aisle shot during the wedding. Other than that I wouldn't trust it nor do I want to hurt my GH5's feelings :-).

8:45 seems to me that having the focus area set to avoid his shoulder and AF-NEAR would have been a better option to prevent it going to the trees/surroundings - keep in mind, even when she's far, she's still nearer than the trees. My 2c.
@Ulrich.Bierwisch
@Ulrich.Bierwisch 4 жыл бұрын
According to my tests, the AF-near and AF-far works different. I think it is only affecting the behavior of the AF/AE Lock button and not the AF-C or the AF-S with the shutter button. So it only does something if you do back button focus. The function is also completely unusable during filming. It can be used for single AF before the take or for pictures. If you use AF-near or AF-far by pressing the AF/AE-button, the focus travels thru the full range from near to far and than the camera decides where to set the focus. So you get a massive hunting that you definitely don't want in the take. This hunting repeats every time you press the AF/AE Lock button. AF-S and AF-C seems to behave just like normal in this settings.
@StoryDrivenThomas
@StoryDrivenThomas 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ulrich, thanks for this. I surely hope that is not true about the AF-Near and AF-Far. I want to believe it was making the focus better lol. But what's funny is there a several other KZbin videos that are using that feature for filming. I will do some more testing and also email Panasonic to confirm your findings (I am thinking your probably right though). If panasonic confirms then I will mention this in a future video. Thanks again!
@Ulrich.Bierwisch
@Ulrich.Bierwisch 4 жыл бұрын
@@StoryDrivenThomas Actually you did already the right thing by choosing a small AF-field and targeting the indented person in the crowd. AF-Far with the back button will focus on the persons behind or wall behind the crowd. I think this can be used if you want to get a landscape from within a forest or thru a fence. AF-Near can be used for people in front of distracting background. To test this, you can use an object centered in front of the camera, AF-Far and 225point AF. Start recording and do AF with the shutter button. It will focus on the object. Push AF/AE-button and you get the huge move of the focus to the background and if you do it again it will repeat the full move. If you single step thru the video, you can see how the algorithm works. I use AF-S a lot. Mostly before recording. For AF while filming, I set the speed to low because I like the AF to do smooth transitions. It's also possible to tap to focus on the screen. It's easier to learn how the AF works than to learn manual focus with the native lenses I own (focus by wire). I'm not shooting things like weddings. I can afford mishaps and repeats.

Regards from Stockholm! Really enjoyed your presentation on 2.6. I've been using a camcorder since 2011 - which films pretty well, but not like the GH5! I rented one last August and using manual focus seemed to work pretty well to my great surprise. But, choosing between the 5 and 5S is really hard. How do you find hand held filming with the GH5S? The lack of stabilisation is what spooks me about that camera. A lens like the Leica 12-60 f2.8 has in built stabilisation, is that enough for that camera?
@StoryDrivenThomas
@StoryDrivenThomas 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the comment. I love the GH5S just as much as the regular GH5. I never film handheld with it though, it's always on my gimbal (Crane 2). It works pretty wedding with the 12-35mm but I only used the S with that lens while it was on the gimbal. See, you just can't beat the IS Lock on the GH5. It has saved me at events so many times. On the other hand the GH5S is so much better in low light than the GH5 (and I like the colors much better on the S way less green than the GH5 so I use the S for all of our interviews). That's why I cant see myself without either camera (maybe the GH6 will be a combination or the two?). I know my answer doesn't make your decision any easier :-(.

Thanks for sharing! In my experience, the 1 filed autofocus and the 225 field autofocus (set to 1 field) are quite unreliable, at least in photo mode. They don´t even nail the focous at half of the shots. Strangely enough, a wider auto focus field works better. GH5 and Leica Lumix 12-60 2.8-4.0.

Hey Keith, I did 4 videos on the S1H but then I unlisted them as I am going in a different direction with my channel so I would have just shared them with you. I liked the S1H. I was going to buy it but as I thought about it the Gh5 is all I need right now. But you if you want a full frame camera (4k 60p is cropped), with a great image I would recommend it. Your still not going to get Canon level auto-focus. I used manual focus the whole time.

@@StoryDrivenThomas yes, crane 2 works! Just need a longer cable, I currently use g7 and about to upgrade to gh5 so I bought a manual focus device for zhiyun, its selling for 17£ right now, absolute bargain! And it allows me to control manual lenses too. But it's very tricky to balance and changing lens is a 15min job with that. So I'm thinking to stop using it all together and just go with the lens alone haha

@StoryDrivenThomas
@StoryDrivenThomas 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Fernando, haha thanks. Regarding the cameras, yeah, if your only going with one or the other I can see it being a struggle as they both have different strengths. GH5S if you are going to need to use in low light situations and of the two O think the GH5S has improvement in its color sciene (especially with the skintones IMO). GH5 if you know your going to be doing a lot of handheld filmmaking. Those are the most extreme differences between the two cameras. I love both though so I don't think you'll be disappointed either way.

@StoryDrivenThomas
@StoryDrivenThomas 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Charlie, I am more than happy to try to help. I also have the viltrox adapter. In my exp the Metabones is better (because my 2 viltrox adapters have been buggy from the beginning). In both cases the GH5 and GH5S autofocus is already not great so when you add an adapter into the mix it's going to be even worse. With my viltrox I always put the adapter on the lens first and then put it on the camera. When you put on your lens, even after you hear the click try to turn it just a little tighter. When I use adapters I only use manual focus (well I really only use manual focus anyway).

Hey, I have been searching and I can't find an answer so I figured I'd ask here. Can auto focus be used only when half pressing the shutter button/function button during video recording? Like noncontinuous autofocus, you set the auto focus area, and then when you half press the shutter/function button it searches for focus and stays on whatever focal distance you are on when let go of the half shutter press?
