Hey Dustin, would love your suggestion for using V-Log at 4000 ISO on the S1H/S1 and perhaps your suggestions for the best baseline de-noising settings in Resolve (in case you use Resolve). This video was great, although I would have loved to see more of 2000-4000 ISO range work with low light (and perhaps a faster lens). Thanks for what you do! Hey Dustin, thank you so much for your videos, they are really helping me better understand the full potential of my S1H. I'm having trouble gauging when grain gets introduced in to my image. Viewing the LCD and my monitor with either the HLog, Vlog assist or just a standard profile, as I push the ISO up the image continues to look crisp on my screen. However when looking back on my footage I notice it starts to break up at a certain point and doesn't reflect what I'm seeing on my monitor. Is there a way to see when grain becomes prominent on my image through the monitor and what my output will be closer to. Thanks

You are correct about HLG. The dynamic range of this color profile is incredible when used properly. I have used it with a ninja V and managed to expose indoor and outdoor with recovered highlights and shadows with no noise at 400 ISO. I have tested it extensively and the fact that your Highlight cutoff is WAY higher than rec 709 you can pull off some amazing things. GREAT video BTW.

Thank you very much from spain , I'm laughing so much with the intros, especially this one, I thought for a moment that you would not share your gold-secret . Very professional chanel, I wish you all the best. I have a question that makes me feel insecure but here goes. To do a WBalance in low lights ? do you know if it is appropriate to raise the ISO, but then lower it again to record the scene ? it seems that in the "set" mode of the WBalance, when there is low light it does not work.
@DustinArmstrongPro3 жыл бұрын
Appreciate the support🙏. It shouldn't affect WB since ISO is essentially just digitally brightening your image so you should be fine. Don't sweat it. I still ask questions like that all the time! We all gotta figure things out somehow!

@DustinArmstrongPro4 жыл бұрын
I didn't directly test that, but there isn't a huge difference from a technical standpoint from 420 and 422 as long as your shooting 10bit. There might be a tiny bit less color noise at 422 to barely noticeable

Wouldn't setting sharpness to -5 instead of just Zer0 soften the image/noise digitally baking it instead of just disabling the sharpening effect?
@DustinArmstrongPro4 жыл бұрын
Not sure. How do you disable sharpening? This is the only method I know of, but haven't run into an unpleasant softening look on my footage
@Willie-8A4 жыл бұрын
@@DustinArmstrongPro I would Imagine Zeroing it is disabled. I just got the camera a couple weeks back and I was watching your videos (really helpful) to try to get more acquainted with it before I start shooting with it. I came from a 5D MKII with MagicLantern which I know like the back of my hand and I can make it look amazing, but this Panasonic is still a mystery to me. I used to use a "similar" profile on the 5D with Sharp:0, Contrast:-4, Sat:-2 to achieve a flatter look cleaner to grade and less digital looking. So I'm all for removing sharpness, I just worry about degradation. The only reason for the upgrade was low light capability (allowing for smaller units and faster setups) and clients requesting 4k & 6k, even though most of the time, the final output for delivery is just 1080, but it's a hype word so...You gotta have it. Now I can throw in my own Hype words in the mix, like Netflix approved, HDR, and the mighty RAW. But I'm really excited about getting familiar with the camera and these videos are great. I've been busy with work, but I'm looking forward to actually test these settings and the effects on the footage.

Maybe try a few tests at 0 and -5 and see if there's a unpleasant image. Glad they've been helpful! Got more stuff coming soon more specific to the S1H. Hopefully they'll keep helping! Ah yes the ol marketing buzz words 😂

2:16 Actually setting to 0-1023 will limit your dynamic range inside Premiere at least because it cannot handle full range H264/H265 footage natively. Dark and bright areas will be just cut off. You can use the Lut (Premiere Range Fix) to solve the issue ;)
@DennisSchmitz4 жыл бұрын
But in practice, the range setting won't affect dynamic range at all, but used bit depth.

When you're exposing with your Standard Profile in the description, are you over exposing or shooting for +-0? In Vlog I aim to expose 1 to 1 2/3 over exposed.
@DustinArmstrongPro3 жыл бұрын
I expose for middle grey typically which is usually anywhere from -1 to +1 depending on the scene. I don't usually use that as my reference though since it's not extremely accurate
@stevestrasser68334 жыл бұрын
Great! I have created your photo style. I called it: Dustins low light. I will test it soon. And nice to have confirmed again that HLG performs so good. Which photo style to use when? It all depends on the scenery of course. However, I prefer to keep one photo style for all the scenes and sets in one big project. To use different photo styles means color matching later in post. I use HLG to film performances, where you have bright lights and dark backstage areas or black curtains behind. I use V-LOG if the additional dynamic range is required, most of the time actually but mostly outside during daytime. True, you need enough light for V-LOG. It can get messy very quickly in the midtones otherwise. If you can't avoid it, try to stay at the two native ISO values (lowest in the settings for each photo style. 640 and 4000 for V-LOG). And finally I use Standard or Natural for low budget projects to avoid too much hassle with color correction. You can read them in the ISO settings but here are some more native ISO values: HLG 400 and 2500. CinelikeD 200 and 1250. Standard 100 and 640.
@puma31004 жыл бұрын

Even though I have Panasonic g85, this is similar to what I found. Standard is really great for low light plus -2 or even -3 shadows, allows you camera not to struggle. The contrast does not give you extra dynamic range just allows you to see more into the shadows since there is less contrast.
