I have the Lumix S5 with the Sigma 24-70 for video, and you can set the focus ring to linear in the S5. It works great. But the more expensive Panasonic focus clutch does still offer more resistance. Sorry if someone else has already pointed this out. Thanks for your video, PAV. Always a pleasure to watch your reviews.

As far as I am aware linear focusing does not work with Sigma lenses at all. Yes, you can switch it on but it just does not change anything with all of S line cameras
@Millistration3 жыл бұрын
I can also confirm Sigma can go linear, the only thing is the degrees remains unchangeable. The throw will be linear though, and seems to sit around that 180 degrees or so.

Panasonic 24-70 for me seems to be one of the best video AF lenses compared to other lenses I own such as Panasonic 24-105, 35mm f1.2 sigma, Panasonic 50mm f1.4, etc The performance comes down to AF settings. I’ve found that each lens performs differently and requires different dialed-in settings. So not an out-of-the-box AF system. Also Panasonic 24-70mm seems to have more 3d pop and character (possibly due to Leica cert). But it is slight, shows more in some photos, and looks similar to the sigma in other photos. So buying new, sigma is probably the better value (not sure about build quality and longevity, obviously Panasonic would likely win). But buying used, Panasonic seems to be the best choice IMO (esp for video, or for that extra pop in your photos)
@PavSZ2 жыл бұрын
it also comes down to the personal preference when it comes to choosing lenses of the same spec. I agree with different dialed-in settings for AF for different lenses. It's just how it is

The dust issue is VERY much real and happened to all those who had early copies of it (assuming it's been fixed). Whats more, Sigma was very slow to react to this and did not acknowledge the issue until much later. I will never buy another Sigma lens for this reason.

I like how the Sigma breathes in certain vibrancy of the colors in the photos, but this is something also adjustable in post. However, the Lumix has slightly more pleasant bokeh, and this is also a matter of taste after all. For such a small difference, I believe the price can only be the deciding factor.

Thank you for the info Pav! I preordered my s5 ii for a very good price and I am a beginner filmmaker. I found an offer of the panasonic one, being 550€ more expensive than the Sigma. It's a very tentative offer but I don't know if is worth it... Since I didn't try the panasonic ecosystem before and i am a beginner, what would you recommend me? I believe both of them will perfom good with the new autofocus system but I am also wondering if Panasonic will go for a better 24-70 f2.8 such as Sony did. Would like to know your thoughts on this! Don't worry about it...I have the same problem with Panasonic lenses. I replaced my 24-105 3 times because of dust or mold... and I've probably used these lenses for maximum 20 times in total... in two years lol Lenses that extends while zooming in and out are prone to pump dust inside the barrel...it happens with every brand.
