Thanks a lot for the tests. Hard to find sigma on Panasonic videos on KZbin. Have to say Panasonic’s are really manual focus for video cameras. The DFD’s problem is (a) it has to overshoot when it changes focus distance hence the pulsing just before it locks on you, (b) it just randomly pulses even when you stay in place, and (c) it is much slower than PDAF. Even with Panasonic lens, the first 2 problems just creates a moment of unpleasantness in the footage.

As a side note, you are mixing focus breathing with pulsing. Focus breathing means the image seems zooming in our out during focusing, so it seems it changes the focal length. The S PRO lenses doesn’t have any breathing as they are hybrid lenses and not photographic lenses like the Sigmas. On the other hand next time you should also test the parfocal behavior, so you will see how good the S PRO lenses are 😉

this video is super useful for me thanks you, BTW i want to buy a camera and I'm confused over sony a7iii and lumix s5 or should i wait for any other camera because sony a7iii is very old i mean 2018 so I'm thinking that lumix might be the good option to go for ( but still I'm bit confused because I'm basically a sony shooter and i love the S-log ). I mean I'm super confused right now. The thing is that i want a camera that gives me the best colors and quality and also bit budget friendly. So, the things you can me with are as follows :- 1. Difference between 10bit 422 vs 8 bit. 2. S-log vs V-log. 3. Lens choices ( can i use sigma art lenses with lumix s5 ) 4. I want a overall camera which can do both video and photography so who's better lumix s5 or sony a7iii for photography. 5. Can i get cinematic looking footage from Lumix s5. 6. Your opinion over sony a7iii vs panasonic lumix s5.
@DustinArmstrongPro4 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed! I can help with your decision hopefully. 1. There’s a pretty big difference when it comes to color grading 10bit over 8bit. Personally, I don’t use 8bit anymore unless I know I don’t need to do any kind of color grading after. 2. S-LOG you’ll get a tiny bit more dynamic range over V-LOG but they will be similar otherwise. You probably won’t see a huge difference between them. 3. You can get L Mount Sigma lenses for the S5 and you can use EF lenses with an adapter, but unfortunately you can’t use E Mount lenses with the S5 via an adapter so you’d have to invest in new lenses. 4. They’re very similar cameras when it comes to photography. They will just function differently since they are different interfaces, but very similar cameras in terms of photography. In terms of video, the S5 has WAY more video features compared to the A7III. The biggest disadvantage Is the autofocus is better on the A7III for video. 5. Yes. Cinematic look is kind of a subjective word but you definitely can. 6. Personally I would go with the S5 but I don’t care about having fantastic autofocus. It’s convenient but the S5 beats the A7III in my opinion. If you care about autofocus, the A7III is a better choice or if you’re too invested in Sony E Mount lenses that might be a better choice to stick to Sony. You could also check out the Sony A7C. Basically the same as the A7III just smaller

Why do these pricey lenses struggle so much with autofocus, when true video cameras with fixed lenses do this so easily? I use a Sony XD Cam for run and gun video situations, and it does nice job of continuous focus. Not to mention the fact that it goes all the way out to 348 mm, and way more using their clear image zoom. True, it doesn’t give me the selective depth-of-field that these lenses do. Maybe that trade-off is part of my answer?
@tosvus3 жыл бұрын
Videocameras usually use smaller sensors, and more will be in focus. You can have more in focus, and minimize this going in and out of focus by changing to a slower f stop.
@DustinArmstrongPro3 жыл бұрын
It's not the lens making the autofocus bad, it's the technology of the cameras autofocus system. The lens plays a role, but not as much as the camera

This video made me feel better about my lens decision. I prefer the Panasonic FF cameras over the competition for their body build, sensor (47 MP), optics and handling. However, they are expensive compared to the competition and so are the Leica and most Panasonic lenses. Luckily, I nabbed a clean S1R with 3K clicks for only $1650. The Panasonic 24-70 is nowhere to be found on the used market but I was lucky enough to find a pristine Sigma 24-70 for only $700. The seller was motivated to sell because he was leaving the country. Wow, I thought my Sigma was huge but that Panasonic is absolutely monstrous when zoomed in! I shoot mostly stills.

I'm seing that Lumix/Sigma does NOT allow a smooth ramping aperture on Sigma L lenses. I know the Sigma DG DN 24mm stair-steps it's aperture as it opens and closes in video. Is it true that you can run Sigma L lenses in video with auto aperture? I know that Sony DOES allow the same Sigma lenses to have a smooth ramping aperture. Sadly,...this is a deal breaker for me and Sigma for video. Lumix branded lenses DO have a true smooth aperture ramp.

I am genuinely puzzled. Most of the reviews of this system focus on video features. I own both Sony and Panasonic cameras and would never even think of using the panasonic for video due to the horrible AF. However, I love my panasonic for photography as the focus for photography is lightening quick and accurate. For video I use my Sony. I just don't understand.
@DustinArmstrongPro3 жыл бұрын
Can still use it for video with manual focus?
@VynZography3 жыл бұрын
Sure, but why not have the option of the really good Sony AF? Is there something about the Panny that compensates for lack of AF?
@DustinArmstrongPro3 жыл бұрын
I mean ideally good AF would be nice yes, but panny has 4:3 Anamorphic modes, Anamorphic desqueeze, and 6k open gate. So that's 1 advantage over the Sony.

You mean Sigma I'm assuming? Or are you just talking the colors of the A7III compared to the Panansonic? I agree that the colors look better though
@klarion4 жыл бұрын
@@DustinArmstrongPro I mean the Sony camera in your three way comparison. I used to shoot Sony, so it's interesting to note that their color is consistent on other models besides what I had. I found it too time consuming to color correct/shift Sony files. But for me video is just an afterthought, so I have no problems with Panasonic. I get the same exact keeper rates as with the Sonys I used before.
@DustinArmstrongPro4 жыл бұрын
The test was more just to show the autofocus as a comparison, but yeah I do agree. Sony may have more accurate, I like Panasonic’s better from camera. Yeah for photos the autofocus is a different story. It has focus shift problems for video(I meant that in the video not focus breathing)

That focus test it's actually Panasonic's fault not sigma's as sigma's on Sony focus exceptionally well so same lens with same motor isn't focusing on Panasonic is a joke. Also when you compared Sony did you compare sigma on Sony or some other lens? Also that Panasonic's focus wasn't breathing it was hunting.
@DustinArmstrongPro3 жыл бұрын
It's still not as good on a Sony with a Sigma but yes it is better only because Sonys AF is miles ahead of Panasonic. So yes like you said not good AF on Panasonic paired with not as good with the Sigma makes it pretty bad. No I don't own any Sigma E Mount lenses, but I've used them before and yeah the AF is much more usable. This video wasn't about Sony I just wanted to show how much better it is compared to Panasonic. That's what I meant shifting/hunting but said breathing for some reason.

I have Panasonic S5IIx with Sigma ART 24-70mm and I can say one thing; TERRIBLE AUTOFOCUS. According to this video (I never tested it) the Panasonic 24-70mm has the same problem. So, probably the problem is not in the lenses, but in the Panasonic Lumix S5IIx.

@@DustinArmstrongPro No, always. Light comes from all angles. The lens hood is designed to protect the lens from stray light. If you don't use it light will always make your image look more "washed out". Unless you are going for that look you should always use the lens hood, at least if you want the most contrast in your image.

@@DustinArmstrongPro Where you walk towards the camera, or in and out of frame both in daylight and low light conditions in movie mode. This is the part of the assessment that you call the "autofocus" section. But autofocus is how quickly and accurately the lens focuses when you press the shutter and is about stills as much as video. I am not splitting hairs, it's just that personally I would like to know about the rapidity and accuracy of the lenses focussing abilities when taking pictures.
