I helped renovate that dam and the paths that run down through the woods, and I helped renovate the old blacksmith building a little further down back in the early 80s with The Arkwright Society.

Remember all that work being done. And, all the bottles they found int top dam, and still do, now and then, up to Wishing Stone. And, but, now they've built all those sodding new builds agin Stathams Farm and ruined it all.

Indeed, remember it so well from the early to mid 80's when A. Society were renovating it all, and so much there was of it, down to Paytons colour works and Fords, at the bottom end. Magical place.

Loved this stretch. Very disappointing when you get to ravenscar but no idea you could go through the tunnel so looking forward to seeing that. Once you get past this bit it’s beautiful again. Thanks for sharing this beautiful part of the world

The remnant works down at Lumsden bottom end twas known as Paytons Colour Works because it was the dyeing works connected to Payton and Baldwins Cotton Spinning Victoria Mill as used to be on Smedley Street, East, Matlock. . At the Mills location there's a new housing estate there now, on the site of the mill, which itself was a hotel with swimming pool intact beforehand. All that remains of the original structure is the streetside Mill Managers house and next to it, what was the boiler house with the massive 'garage door' 'to', both now refurbished as dwellings, and the park across the road. Believe me, half of Matlocks labour force who lived on Hurst Farm Estate once worked theere. Seems Lumsdales always been used for colour extraction to the towns cotton industry at one degree or another.

Cheers Ant. Very interesting I would have thought that place would have been a busy industry back when it was built. And then when it was in use.👍

I first went here around 8 years ago before all the fences went up, it was such a magical place where you could explore at will.. You can understand my disappointment when i returned after lockdown to find most of the site fenced off with no access.. I've never been more disappointed, the amazing secret atmosphere had gone 😔 I understand it had become so popular with visitors during lockdown that it was being damaged so i do understand but still sad to see it surrounded by metal fences.. From your video it does appear a little more accessible now so maybe I'll give it another visitor in the future. Very nicely presented video as always 😊

Another great video Ant. Looks a lot colder than today 😂 what a wonderful area and secluded spot like you say doesn't look like this country! Although this video looked far more interesting with way more to see I did visit a bone mill recently complete with water wheel intact not far from me at Narborough in West Norfolk. Not sure how many of these are still around?

Funny you should say "from another country" Most of the falls are the remains of most ancient man made structures, pre taught history, pre mud flood hidden history. the giant cut block work, many now tumbled. Remains of doorways, windows, angled and shaped blocks...much reminiscent of ancient structures across the world. the Peak District has many such remains, all the so called 'Rocks', 'Edges', 'Castles' (as in Castle Naise). Iron age folk made use of these remains of pre existing structures to build upon, creating their 'hill forts'. If you go inside he 'caves' found in some of these sites, you can see the remains of ancient rendering and diagonal scratches where the rendering was once adhered. Is much hidden history.
