Have always appreciated Matt's reviews. It helped me by a surron x a year ago. This review is great, too. But, he used an incorrect pricepoint for the X1. The $3,490 is for the base x1. Matt rode the bike with m600 silent upgrade ($200) and 2000watt ludicrous upgrade ($300) so an accurate price for the bike is $3,990 (not $3,490 as reported). He mentions the upgrade cost of the levo display but did not mention the x1 2000watt upgrade cost or silent upgrade cost. Otherwise, great vid. Thanks.

I upgraded my X1 with coil rear shock, carbon wheels, carbon handle bar, rev grips, WTB Silverado saddle and raceface Chester pedals and boy oh boy this beast runs and feels great. I would not trade this with any other ebike for that price range plus it has plenty of power and torque. With 2.8 tires it can climb any roots and rocks. And the addition of the throttle this ebike rocks.

Really like my X1. At first I had some reservations. I was used to riding a 750w Banfang hub motor bike. It had lots of power but was heavy with no rear suspension. This made for a very bumpy ride and it couldn't tackle some of the steeper hills I wanted to ride. The thing I had to get use to was the frequent shifting to make sure I didn't overtask the chain and snap it by being in too low of gear. But I found it to be an excellent climber. Although you have to be constantly thinking about the terrain you are riding on. I like the throttle but using it alot really hurts your range. The power delivery is much different as you have to peddle harder to increase your speed and torque, but your efforts will be rewarded as the bike is smooth and powerful. The motor is a little loud, but I'd rather get over that steep hill than worry about that. The trimmings on the bike are largely first class. No Fox but the Rockshox do really good job. Only One major complaint: when you have about 20 percent left on the battery, it rapidly looses power to around one half. Kind of a pain if you encounter some hills towards the end of a long ride. I give the bike a 4/5.

This is the best review of the X1 that I have been able to find. The argument for the Levo is a solid one, and is certainly a good one for someone with deep pockets. The point of the X1 (in my opinion) is to show the consumer who saves their pennies that they can have a solid MTB that will not fail on the trail in a few weeks. As $3700 (or whatever it is at this time) is still a lot of money for some people. Typically, anyone with the resources to by a $10k e-MTB won't even know what Luna is...but those looking at the X1 most certainly know what the Levo is. What the Kenovo is, what the Heckler is, and on down the line. While it sounds like feel that this guy's a Luna fanboy, the fact that he actually has the Levo, and still favorably rates the X1 is huge in my book. The X1 not being as playful as the Levo could be weight, but it could also be components...Change the stem, compare HT angles for possible fork changes, change rims for something lighter and the bike feel can change dramatically. It should be obvious that I am seriously looking at e-Bikes, but even a used bike at $5k is only going to have a 500wH battery, with questionable life left...Try justifying a $5k used bike with my wife, and while I get it, she won't. (anyway WAF aside, just gotta scrape up a few more pennies...)

@@scottjameseaton5503 Well, I will soon see. Just plunked down my hard earned on the X1, size M, with silent gear and upgraded display. I REALLY wanted the Commencal ebike, as I have recently purchased 2 commencal mtbs for my kids, the Meta 24 and the Ramones 24+. The quality is so good, even though they are just kids bikes, that I figured that was the bike that I wanted for myself. But then the economics steps in, and my "dream bike" will have to wait. That is, provided my kids take to it, as it looks like they are. (I am a motorcycle guy who no longer rides because the kids are not drawn to motorcycles like their dad, so this is hopefully that gateway drug)

@tylervankampen6160
@tylervankampen6160 3 жыл бұрын
They don't make a class 1 because Luna is a class well below Specialized. They don't understand how the MTB industry or culture works. There are plenty of MTB trails and parks that still don't even allow class ones. So adding the throttle and more speed to the X1 makes it a very undesirable eMTB. The X1 is a dirt bike, not a eMTB. Buy a class 1 if you want to ride MTB trails. Buy a X1 if you want to ride with dirt bikes.

I think it depends what you want if you want a crazy powerful bike by all means get the X1, but if you want a mountain bike to ride like a mountain bike with assist that complements the bike not changes it then get the Levo. More power is not always what we want on a mountain bike. Sure it is fun but if you really trail ride then you might be like me and want a more natural feeling mtb. I currently own a couple of E-bikes and one of them is a Kona full sus. with a BBSHD with Ludi controller. Like everyone else I thought I had to have the Ludi. I was wrong, I honestly never use the power of it, and it made the throttle uncontrollable. I ended up programming it back so it puts out the equivalent of the stock controller, and now it feels better on the trails. There are situations one might want a powerful bike, just not for my riding.The Levo just feels fluid and composed, dare I say natural.... But I would buy the base model.... Also just to be clear, I do like the X1 and I love my Kona with the BBSHD
@bluesti3
@bluesti3 4 жыл бұрын
Yep, you're exactly right. That's why I pretty much came to the conclusion that it's a toss up ENTIRELY dependent on what your preference is. The funny thing is, most people "think" they need the extra power... but they really don't. Hell, I rarely actually ever use Turbo mode on my Levo even.
@CaviDS
@CaviDS 4 жыл бұрын
@@bluesti3 yeah if you trail ride alot then a little bit of power goes a long way. For example twords the beginning of the video he climbed the concrete hill on the X1 with only throttle. I would never do that the throttle for me is emergency only if I am almost to the top of a hill and I need just a little extra. i also rented a levo and I found that I really did not need the turbo mode unless I was on a very steep hill, and I am a big guy at almost 270 lbs. on my kona with the BBSHD i rarely go over the 250watt mark. On paper the big power sound aluring and great, and when you get the bike sure you pull a couple of wheelies and fast runs then reality sets in.........
@mikewelpott8743
@mikewelpott8743 4 жыл бұрын
I went with the standard configuration as I like riding bikes. It should arrive in a month. I can see the appeal of Ludi, but after reading everything that I could on the X1, the consensus was that Ludi was a nice to have, but certainly not a "must have" considering that the standard bike is still more powerful than your mainstream ebike. I hope that I am not wrong, but all I really care about is getting to the top and having the energy to explore and then ride back down. My first ride in a long time (just the other day) on my analog bike (without the kids) and I about killed myself trying to get to the top without stopping and walking...needless to say -I had to stop and walk. So, I will make that climb, on that bike...as I have set a goal, but when riding with my buddies who have been climbing said hill for years, they will not have to wait up for me once the X1 arrives.

This video is comparing a class -4 electric bike to a class -1 electric bike. The X1 is in the same class as electric dirt bikes except it has pedals. I think the x1 is a cool rig but its kind of ridiculous to compare it to something that its not. This luna x1 is fine if ridden on private land or places where one can legally ride an electric dirt bike. You cant LEGALLY ride a class 4 ebike on any dedicated mtb trails in the states that I know of. I think Luna should design and produce a class 1 ebike so they can really stir things up in the emtb world. If they can sell a class 4 ebike for 4500, they should be able to sell a decent class 1 ebike for the same or cheaper. I put some serious thought into buying an x1 until I found out I basically had nowhere to really ride it….at least not on any singletrack

I'm ready for my third ebike. I'm 64 and just getting into biking. Im used to running but running is getting a lot more challenging. I love that this has trottle like my Radrover did. I like the dual shocks and not so fat tires like my MateX and Radrover, cause I like pedaling, but love the trottle when I get tired. I ride mostly easy trails. How is the Luna to ride with power assist off? Does it ride like a normal bike? Would you recommend this bike for me if I was going to change to a comfort seat?

Also nice to tap the throttle when u can't peddle. Can't peddle with lean angle but you can throttle. It's great. I'm ex pro motorcycle road racer :) my ebike is insane and people must trip out seeing me tear the town up on me ebike. I have the most insane ebike on the planet and nobody's seen it. Yet. Long long story but it will be told. Thanks god i hid it all away for so long. Decades. And it dominates. I'm back and excited. Full blown downhill bike beyond. 11x,8.

Quick question... on the X-1 if you pedal without any assist is there drag from the motor? I know some ebikes have that issue... just wondering on these.

Hello, I am 6'0" with a 32" inseam, looking at your X1 sizing options. I only see 2 options, Medium 17" and XL 21", which would you suggest, given that pedal distance isn't as important on the assist bikes. Also, I don't care to be excessively hunched over when standing.. Thanks.

Matt, Thank you for an excellent review and comparison of the Luna X1 Enduro Vs Specialized Turbo Levo Carbon Ebikes. I was ready to order the Specialized Turbo Levo Comp when I came across this comparison review. I like to do a good amount of research and have changed my focus to the Luna X1 after seeing your review. Also, while looking at the Luna site I found the new Apollo. When will you have an in-depth video review of the Apollo? How can I contact you direct? I would like to discuss the differences between the X1 and the Apollo. Thanks!

Really, this is not a fair comparison, it's a slick sales video for Luna. First, the comparison of a class 1 to a class 3 (this is a speed pedelic with a throttle) bike is bogus. A throttle may be great for street but on the MTB trails getting respect for class 1 bikes is hard enough, but class 3 bikes are poison on the trails and a big reason why there is so much friction between analog MTB and eMTB. Weight is not on the comparison list, although mentioned in the video and a big factor for many riders. Also water proof of the motor unit, which is where a lot of trouble starts for eMTB owners. Extra power sounds good in theory, but unfortunately chains have not kept up so more power means more chain problems. Even on TL its an issue. In fact the market is going the opposite way - Specialized has introduced lower power motors with super light weight spec which gets the bikes to analog level weight with a lower power spec. The price of Luna is awesome, but no dealer service. Specialized stands behind their product and dealer shops can handle any problem. I like that Luna has Minnions, normally I would expect cheap Kendra tires. A lot of riders would prefer those to the Butchers on the TL. One thing I will say is the ebike tech is moving so fast that within a few months everything will change again. I own a Haibike Xduro and TL and ride the TL almost 90%. Its the most awesome bike I have ever owned and my formerly loved analog Yeti is sold.....I would definately not consider a class 3 bike for trails. OK for city and maybe fire roads. The final base TL vs X-1 is more fair, but if carbon is so great, how come the X-1 is so heavy?? Apologies Luna, I'm just sayin'.....

For bike components, you can have your local bike shop do the work without any issues, I would guess. For issues with the motor or display, Luna support via phone or internet is pretty solid. Of course, any parts shipping, etc would potentially be an issue.

The Levo is a trail bike, the Kenevo is the Enduro bike. Yes the X1 will be faster on that hill, as you will be going over the speed limit for the Levo. RobRides did a comparison of the Euro version of this motor vs the others, and it didn't do so well ............

Try rolling the bike backwards there are some 3 pins on a clutch or engagement gear that occasionally get stuck in the standing position do to grease. The noise should go away if not do it again.

I'm not sure how saying an electric bike is most like a regular bike is considered a compliment. If I wanted a regular bike I wouldn't spend $8k on an electric bike. The Luna realistically crushed the Levo but somehow having less power became a positive as the review went along.

How having more power can be a bad thing when you can tune down and use the power you need or want but still have the power when you need? In my opinion, if you allow me to say, is that, if one want a electric bike to feel like a regular bike, they should buy the regular one

My concern would be future service. $4k in an X-1 is an investment for most folks. We all know Specialized has and will be around for a long time; I believe Luna just celebrated its 4th anniversary. I tend to hold onto bikes for a long time - I could see myself owning this bike in 10 years. Is it worth the extra $$ to ensure a company will be around in 10 years to address repairs? Also nice to be able to walk into a Specialized shop to get service and attention. Just pointing out some benefits of going the Levo route. Sometimes a purchase decision shouldn’t be all about the $$.

current x1 is programable and mot of the disadvantages you mentioned could be solved buy turning the x1 down so the bikes were competing at simaler power levels i don't think having the option to use more power can be counted as a disadvantage and i don't think its fair to compare the handling and feal of both bikes at max power when you can turn the x1 down but you cant torn the levo up. "It also has the advantage of not having the crappy Bafang CANBus firmware which requires special box and special permission to program."

Obviously if one wants a decent bike with decent power at a decent price ... Luna is the best out there. That being said I don't think they understand what it's like for us just 'trying' to get into this world. Yes, we're noobs. Uninitiated. The lowest form of life. BUT we're your yet unrealized market. At least many of us have tried hard enough to understand this new world that we even KNOW about Luna Cycle. Some of us have even read most of Karl's articles and even some of Matt's. BUT ... we can't really get in the door. We cannot get enough information on actually buying a bike to feel even a little bit safe. Do we just have to plunk down some money and hope we get a bike within six months? It feels like that. Luna needs to put out real information on the supply chain and availability of bikes. I've even gone to the forum and its a dead zone. 95% OLD information. No real activity. I know covid has royally offed things up. All the more reason to clue the public in on the state of things. Just assure me I can actually get a bike and you will actually treat me as a valued customer once I take the plunge. Please. I really want an upscale bike and I have the money.

Riding up the cement incline - thats not 2000W of power (2.6 horsepower). If it actually had that much power it would have accelerated and not just held ˜4-6 mph climb speed it showed. I think they are overrating the power, I wonder if its more like the 750W that Bafang middrive is designed to deliver
@garyagostini3426
@garyagostini3426 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on which gear he is using. I have the 2000w on my x1 and the 750 on a home build. The 750 is much smoother and silent but the 600 2000w will dig very deep I have not run out power yet using the throttle and or peddles on a steep technical uphill.

I would take the luna x 1. Its got the bafang motor. The specialized is for grandma 👵. They put the smaller 600 on x 1 it would be nice with the 620. It all depends on how much you want to peddle. You just put it down to level 3 the x 1 kicks the shit out of the specialized. Would buy a moped or a gsx r 1100. The specialized is a moped.
