Lunging Lesson - Preparing a green horse for Riding, what signs to look for

When you are first starting a horse under saddle or the horse has only been in training for just a few years, it's considered a green horse.
This is why you should always start your session with groundwork. N that can contain a lunging session.
Having the horse properly prepared by lungering for respect and and making sure the horse is in the proper frame of mind saves you a lot of problems. Remember you are preparing the horse's mind as well.If it's as its body.

Yes this one has a lot of energy for sure. I think she will make a great endurance or proformance horse for someone. So she's gonna need a person who can handle that energy. that's why I think it's a good example of what to look for and understand in this type of horse.

So, for the opposite- say, a horse that is quite lazy/not forward on the lunge. What would you suggest? She responds great to my energy level, which is awesome, but sometimes I really have to raise my energy level to get her to go to trot and especially canter. I really want her to trot but be relaxed, however often she has trouble having good impulsion while relaxing at the same time.

Great question. Some horses are just a little harder to get going and you may have to use stronger pressure. Like learning how to Crack the whip. Once they learn you won't make them, they usually will continue the habit. You have to just keep at it , or move to a round pen and get impulsion off the line.
