Rob, I'm a fly fishing guide here in Arkansas! Good work learning the fly ways. A good tip in addition to the 10/2 is to look back when you back cast, and pause a little longer on your back cast, that will let your rod load the line to help with your presentation cast. Also, when you get a fish on, strip the line with your left hand like you're doing, but strip the line below your right hand so that you can keep constant pressure on the fish. Just loosen the grip on the line in your right hand while you pull the line through your fingers with your left hand.

I absolutely LOVE the fly fishing content that you guys are putting out lately. Favorite needs to develop a line of fly rods. When you hook a fish on the fly rod you don't have to strip it in. Especially when you are so close to being "on the reel' like you were with the striper at 9:00-ish. With bigger fish the reel (and it's drag) will help you fight them in.

Rob, a tip of advice when you have a fish on a fly rod is, hold the line like if you were stripping and pull in line behind your hand. Also keep your thumb on top of the grip, not warped around it. Its needed for proper form in the cast. Also I keep on saying it, Watch some videos to learn!

You need to pause more on the back cast and the forward cast you will feel a slight tention on the back cast and you should time it the same on the front cast the tention comes from the floating line folding out and pulling back then 10 to 2 but you need to pause more on both casts

Wilderness Safety Institute is right you need to keep the line floating above the water and let the line set gently on the surface. One thing I noticed when you were casting is the bending in the wrist. Keeping your wrist ridged while casting at 10 & 2 will help keep the line above the water and give you that good looking casting loop....

More power from your wrist man less arm also try searching "roll cast" on youtube will help you in tighter spots.

Great video Rob!! Saw the other that Justin did at the same time too. I want to try & fly fish also. I live in Michigan (SE LP) & there are literally 100s of streams, ponds, & small waters I can cut my teeth on with a fly rod in hand & not have to drive more than 30 minutes or less in any direction!! I've been fishing since I was 5 & bassin most always now since 1969. Never fly fished. You guys give an old man the inspiration!! Thank You for your service to our country & to you both thank you for the entertainment yous have given me!!

Rob, fly fishing can be very frustrating. Practice keeping the bait out of the water until you get the distance needed. It will spook the fish if you aren't careful. Also, apply pressure to the line on your back stroke. It will allow you to keep tension on the line without whiplashing which will grant the fly much more distance. Hard to explain, but hopefully you can make a little sense of what I'm trying to say haha.
@midnightdeucer
@midnightdeucer 7 жыл бұрын
I'm really enjoying the fly fishing vids Rob. In your forward cast, and this goes more for finicky fish like trout, don't let the line hit the water until you drop the fly. It can spook the fish

Just a couple of useful fly fishing tips, when you strip in a fish trap the line below your hand not above. 2. When you false-cast keep your rod tip higher so you don't hit the water with your fly. 3. Watch you back for those dang trees!!!!!

On the off chance you see this comment something that may help with fly fishing for you is once you've set the hook to keep more control of all the line is strip from beneath the hand holding the rod and line (right) and as the fish is playing use your off hand (left) to reel up the slack line. Good luck and tight lines!

Whenever your pulling the fish in instead of grabbing line behind your right index finger and pulling it out pull from behind it so the line is always in your finger for tension and you don't have to move the pole or your hand a lot to reposition the line in your right index again.

I have gotten myself a fly rod last summer and still have yet to catch a fish on it because I always have my usual rod / reel with me and I give up on the fly combo to soon. Really need to put more time into it like you did here. Oh and the lightning.... Yup get inside somewhere. I have been several feet from a strike and don't know how I did not get electrocuted.
