This little board rips! Started this board at the end of my time in Medical School during a gap year as I transitioned to Dental School. Ended up leaving on a surfing walk-about to travel and didn't finish the board for 6 months hahahaha.

What brand of acrylic paint do you use to spray your blank? and have you ever had separation issues when using spray paint and epoxy resin? Thanks!
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop 3 жыл бұрын
Hey this is a super good question that I wondered myself. (You probably know all of this but throwing it all out there for other people who are interested and might benefit). You have to use water or latex based paint. I was wondering myself if some brands were better than others and talked to some local board making masters in San Clemente, one of the hotspots of board making in America. Most of the guys just recommend your average acrylic paint found at craft stores, they were not very specific😂, no one really had a recommended favorite brand, or maybe they were guarding trade secrets😂😂?? I have been using plain old hobby lobby brand acrylic paint and it has worked great! No problems with separation or de-laminations. The key is to air brush on only a thin layer so that the resin can penetrate into the foam. I haven’t done it myself but was warned that if you air brush on a thick layer it can serve as a barrier to inhibit the resin and cloth from really laminating to the foam itself ->delam.

@@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop okay thanks! I appreciate the info. I've always been to scared to airbrush because of epoxy separation issues so I mainly resin tint but I guess ill give it a try soon. Cheers!

Why do you sand the fiberglass cloth befote the hot coat? And what grit have you used?
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop 4 жыл бұрын
If you have a smooth lamination, i.e there aren’t little any little sharp points of fiberglass sticking up anywhere you really don’t need to sand. No pros will ever sand their boards before hot coating, maybe just a few little little rough spots along the ends of the cloth. I did sort of a bad job laminating and had a bunch of small rough spots along the cloth edges and ended up going overboard and just sanded the whole thing smoothing out any minute little inconsistency. The board came out super clean and smooth because of it for me, but once your good at laminating you will pretty much not have to sand barely anything before hot coating! For this i normally just grind down any rough or high spots using 80 or 120 grit. For the real sanding after hot coating i sand first with 80, then 120, 240, 400, then wool pad with 1000 grit compound, then foam buffing pad with Macguires car glaze number 7

Do you use epoxy or polyester resin? I'm trying to decide between the two.
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop 3 жыл бұрын
Polyester resin is cheaper and has been the golden standard since the beginning of surfboards, you can’t go wrong with polyester resin. Epoxy is pretty awesome, it takes longer to cure and harden then poly but other than that it isn’t really any harder to work with than polyester resin, the plus is it is about 30% stronger depending on the manufacturer, it just costs more. So it sort of just depends, if money is an issue go for poly, if you can spare the extra money heck why not!

@@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop thanks. I have another question I'm fixing a board that was broken in half but the resin is taking ages to dry. And I read somewhere that putting some sort of wax in the resin helps with drying.
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop 3 жыл бұрын
Hey sorry just saw this! Hmm that’s weird it isn’t drying?! Are you using UV cure polyester resin, nor map resin, or epoxy? Epoxy is a heat based reaction, so if it’s not in a warm enough place it won’t cure. Depending on the brand it generally needs to be 70-80 degrees for proper curing. If it’s UV polyester resin just let it bake in the sun more, if it’s just plain polyester resin then maybe your ratio of catalyst to resin was off or something, sounds like it might have been light on the catalyst?? was it your lam or hot coat that is staying tacky?
@rockymacallister2581
@rockymacallister2581 3 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure it's a UV resin and I'm I the south of france so drying in heat shouldn't be a problem. I've started putting wax in styrene in the resin before I laminate it and now it dries much much quicker. But it feels slightly flexier than before now.
@jamesroscoe7555
@jamesroscoe7555 3 жыл бұрын
@@rockymacallister2581 Not sure about the UV resins as I don't use them, but normally wax only goes in the top coat iirc. There's sanding resin and laminating polyester resin. The latter is meant to dry slightly tacky so the next layer adheres well to it. There will be much more info if you search on swaylocks or one of the supply shops like greenlight or shaper supply.

Thanks man, this little board rips! 5'7 x 23 x 2.5. An interesting dimension that should stand out to you here is how wide this little board is, most boards are 20 - 22 inches wide, having a little extra width really makes a big difference on these small california mushy waves!

Hey sorry I’m just getting back to you! What length board are you surfing right now? Generally speaking if your surfing 8-9 foot longboards you would probably really enjoy something around 7’0. If your a good surfer you could try out a high volume 6’6ish board, or if you want more of an intermediate step 7’0 - 7’2 might be pretty fun for you. Bigger fish are super fun, a bunch of volume to catch waves easy but so much more maneuverable, as soon as people transition over their carving typically just explodes! They are just so much more maneuverable than longboards. I don’t have any boards ready to go right now, the turn around time is about 1-2 months for customs. Shoot me a Message at Rock and Sea Garage Board Shop on insta for more info if your interested
