Love your content! Quick question for you, what are you using for your pin line and what type of resin are you using for this board?

Hey thanks, stoked other people enjoy board building! On this board I’m using resin research epoxy, can’t recommend it enough so far as epoxy goes. For pin stripes here I used black nail polish as strange as it sounds, Matt kinoshita from kazuma surfboards occasionally will do nail polish pin stripes so I gave it a try. Turned out great but nowadays I pretty much exclusively use POSCA pens, definitely recommend them!! Way easier to work with! Like and subscribe to support the channel!

Such an amazing wedding gift. Aside from discoloration, is there any drawback to using epoxy resin from home depot or a crafts store instead of surf/marine grade? And any difference for fiberglass? I just nabbed a board on facebook that's buckled and has a good nose ding that I'm going to try and repair

Hey thanks!! And As far as I know really the only difference is clarity of the resin! So if you want to get epoxy for Home Depot or any hobby store should be just fine!

Hi! Have you used a nail polish for the pin line? And you make it after the laminating and before the hot coat, right?

So I’ve only used nail polish a couple of times for pin stripes, i learned about it from Matt kinoshita of kazuma surfboards Hawaii, he is one of the current legend shapers. I’ve only used it a couple of times but in the videos where he has used it he put it on top of the hot coat. You might be able to put it under the hot coat and it would be fine but I’m not actually sure, I’ve almost done it a few times but was afraid how it might last long term so haven’t tried it. I Really ought to just run a little test on an older board, resurface it, add pin stripes and see how it hold ups long term under the hot coat. Yo dudee im currently working on a skimboard build but where i live they only sell 8 oz fiberglass cloth, is that a problem? Or is one 8 oz layer the same as two 4 oz layers?

alex a it’s sort of weird, it isn’t a 1:1 comparison. Apparently going to a heavier oz cloth increases the load capacity pretty proportionally but the stiffness/flexibility is different. As i understand it 8 oz should have about the same as two 4oz layers but will act more stiff when glassed. (Which may or may it be what your going for🤷🏼‍♂️🧐, i don’t really know whether you want a skimboard to be stiff or have a little flex🤔). Hey if anybody out there is super knowledgeable about glassing tell us what’s up!!

Did you laminate your decals into the hot coat? (Sanding resin)

On resin tint boards I laminate the board first, then I glass on the logos and cover them up with a small patch of fiberglass, didn’t want colored resin changing my logos color at all. I let that cure and once hard sand down all the rough edges, then I hot coat the whole board. If you are glassing a clear board you can pop in the logo under the fiberglass cloth during the lamination phase, on their board I could have done this on the white deck but just chose to do both logos afterwards

Oh sorry totally misunderstood your question! Yes sir I use sanding resin so it will set hard for sanding down the edges👍. Probably could get away with either though

I have a random question, does anyone know how to cut the fiberglass at the tail to not leave any foam exposed? I am having issues

Ooh dude seriously a good question, I still have a hard time with this. I Really need to talk to a master glasser to really dial it in. Anyways what I do, is a single cut to the v in the tail, and then a single cut to each tip of the fish tails. I cut away excess that hangs off and then get a few small pieces of fiberglass cloth fill in spots where the cloth doesn’t cover in the v of the tail and on the very tip of each fish tail. Small little patches of cloth work great to fill in spots where the main cloth doesn’t cover, small patches adapt well to right angles and corners. That’s what I do, it works well for me, but would still love to really get killer advice from a master glasser

Well shoot, but good luck finding something east coast! I really like high volume wide fish’s, they have enough volume and paddle power to catch waves easy but are short enough they don’t hold you back from learning to carve. Totally changed my surf when i started surfing fish, i can surf shorter higher volume boards and my progression exploded a few years back!

Hey thats a great question, you can download templates for free at www.blendingcurves.com/outline-templates. Just print and cut them and trace onto a blank, or if you want to you can make a permanent template by tracing onto 1/8 inch thick masonite you can get at home depot for $15 👍👍

Oops here is the correct link, updated the description link, that was the stuff i used to use. Art Advantage Rice Paper 100 Sheets-Pack smile.amazon.com/dp/B0027A39W2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_UtzqFbN28A57H. If you pop in fun boxes before laminating the boxes come out stronger vs routing in fun boxes after the lam just because then you have a good part of the weave overlapping over the box. Downside is it can be a little tricky to avoid bubbles around the boxes and it’s a little tricky making it look good/uniform with resin tints. If you route the boxes after the lam you can make it comparably as strong by simply putting a patch of fiberglass cloth over the fin box. Overall it’s personal preference, for me it’s just easier, i always had a problem with bubbles around the boxes, other guys love placing boxes before the lam. No wrong way, just preference 👍🏻
