Lupot Violin, 1811
Recognize the name Lupot? Perhaps it's because his name popped up in our bow video- an 1825 François II Lupot bow that is just an amazing specimen. But this is something different: a Nicolas Lupot violin from 1811. The two were brothers, in a long line of French luthiers.
Now, just because 'Lupot' isn't a name that smacks of the Italians, that puts himself in Cremona- it doesn't automatically lessen his work. In fact, this instrument was one I would've really loved to play on for awhile- it had a big, interesting sound, was large in my hands, and I think something I could've easily fallen in love with. And the catch? Lupot's auction record is only $327,119- that's right, only the price of a house! But compared to Stradivari, that's quite a deal. It only goes to show- how much do these prices really mean?
On another note, I took this opportunity to dive into French history- since it's right in that juicy period, the French Revolution. And Lupot was an artisan living in Paris during the thick of it, Revolution and Restoration. So take some time out of your day for a little history lesson, and join me in exploring the French school!
