So how about a quick poll: Which of the three swimming actions, I show in the video, do you guys like best? Let me know in the comments. Also I am trying to decide between "Swimming mullet" and "Power Mullet" for the name of the lure...which would you go with? Thanks in advance for the help.

Swimming mullet for sure! Power mullet sounds more like a glide bait.

Another great video. Favorite is the power hinge. Notice how it does a 180 degree turn every time you pause it. Great for a following fish pause it and turns right back into their face! I'm definitely going to try this hing design. Thanks again.

Your comment about turbulence got me to thinking. Looking at the shape of your lure sections: What if you introduce more turbulence by tapering the back of the front section but leave the back one more square? This would force the water to strike the front of the back segment and create turbulence. This might introduce both vibration and more movement in the lure. Kind of reverse of what you currently have there.

What a perfect video, thank you Chico, for taking the time to show us in so much detail! I really appreciate it! The swim action is dreamy! I tend to like a wide whole body action more than a tight one when it's about swimbaits as well!

Every time I think of building a tank I remember I live on a lake, it's not ideal but it works. Thanks for watching.
@CraftsmanontheLake4 жыл бұрын
I did several different designs for a swim tank. Long, short, swim tube, moving water around a track. Bottom line was that it just didn't work enough to give an indication of what the actual lure movement would be like in the wild. I think it works for light stuff like flies, and soft baits but solid or heavy stuff.. nope. That's probably why bait companies have long test tanks or pools. Moving water over a bait just isn't the same as a bait being pulled through the water. Sort of like walking on a treadmill with the track moving beneath you just doesn't feel the same as walking. I was going the post a video of my tries, successes, and failures but it would just show that it's not a great option so I didn't bother. Maybe someone has had different luck.
@EngineeredAngler4 жыл бұрын
I have to laugh a bit to hear you talk about your test tank attempts...I've done the same. For me, a small table top current flow tank would be helpful but I've tried and it''s more trouble than it's worth. I have the luxury to just walk down to the dock.

@@EngineeredAngler Same here. The lake is 30 feet outside my front door. Thing is I live in Maine. Winter is the down time when a lot of my lures are made. I cast them onto four feet thick ice but they just don't seem to have the same action when retrieved as they do in the summer. ;-)

Ice? Sounds like just another design challenge.. :)

I went back and looked at the comparison... I love the idea of the power hinge but looking at them side by side it seems that the power hinge has a sort of serpentine movement but he banner hinge seems more fish like. Muscles pulling the center left and right bowing the fish from side to side.

Totally see that...thanks.

Ok...again, fantastic stuff right here!.... to be honest I’m diggin the banner and your favorite, not so much the hybrid.....I build a similar hinge to your style where I set an eyelet into a pocket so the pivot is like yours....I get the close joints, I like that....so my action is similar to your favorite.....on my latest build I actually used j hooks for eyelets to give me a narrower eyelet with tighter tolerances and this allows my pockets to be smaller and you do not see them from the profile, when I release the video I’ll let you know you can check out the hinge...and I honestly want to say thanks... I’m not sure I would have ever played with alternative hinge designs if you had not blew my mind wide open with your design for the double action hinge...love you vids, keep em coming!

Loved it... I copied the design (pretty roughly though) of the multi joint bait. I'm going to make one like your favorite. I too like the movement. Problem is, it's getting so I like making them more than fishing with them! BTW.... When I do a video of my builds that include your ideas I always give prominent notice of your design and youtube site. I caught my first fish on a bait I had made the other day... What a hoot.

@@EngineeredAngler really love the in depth discussions on the hydrodynamics, what causes the motion, etc. would be interested to see more of these "deep dives" on different types of baits! maybe how different lip angles or weight placements affect crankbaits. keep it up!

A great video; thanks for your tutorial. I’m curios though, what happens if you change things up a little? What happens when you alter the face of each segment, use varying densities of wood, and vary the diameter and length of each segment? The head of a snake doesn’t move as it swims, and different specifies of fish have particular movements during types of swimming behavior. A fleeing fish swims differently than a one during a normal pace. It would be interesting to see how the baits change the sinus rhythm, implying a varying cadence, sound, and flash. Thanks again, Bill from Mn.

All good questions....

I do like the bait on the left, It seemed much more lifelike. Would an injured fish swim more like the irregular baits, i.e. putting out a louder or unusual sound and flash?

Those are the questions for the individual fisher to answer....

How about segments that not only move on the x-axis, but move on the y-axis? What happens when the segments rotate, either independently or dependently with other attached segments?

I have played with socket joints that do that. Not really consistent with a realistic action.
