Alot of people think she was romanticizing abuse with ultraviolence. But if there's one thing I've learned from domestic abuse survivors, a lot of them will somehow at some point justify the abuse or think they deserve it. The term "ultraviolence" comes from the book A Clockwork Orange where the ultimate form of violence is violence to oneself. I think Lana actually is exploring a few ways she or people do that to themselves (consciously or otherwise) - by being in relationships with abusive people, through substance abuse, through working for "money power glory", through being the "other woman", etc.

With more and more listens, I’ve realized how sarcastic this album is. This album came after the controversy of the SNL live performance and she’s taking a jab at critics, especially with every song being in one take. Songs like Brooklyn baby, money power glory, and fucked my way up to the top are main examples, the critics believed she couldn’t really sing so THEREFORE she must be f*cking a producer in order to be successful !! And same thing with Money power glory is about critics saying that she is just money hungry when she is very much the most down to earth artist I’ve come across :)

@@hamiltonlucio3910 the album's title track is a twisted fantasy of Lana's obsession with a man, and I think she ends up killing him or at most kidnapping him later on (him being one for carnage, having a dangerous lifestyle, always on the run as told in the title track). Ups and downs throughout the album and Swan Song she sort of goes all in with her obsession, to the point of ending her own career just to be with him. In the final song, (yes it's a cover but it fits the narrative) she basically says she was playing around and didn't mean to take it all on him. Just my own theory on how this album is darker than UV. Edit: basically she puts this man through HELL LMAO. Especially in Salvatore.

West Coast is about Lana moving from New York to California. She is leaving behind NY's rock music scene and preferring the glamour of Hollywood and all that the West Coast has to offer. But it's also an analogy of leaving behind and breaking up with her "cold, neglected lover", her previous partner, the one she talks about in the song Shades of Blue ("that's why I'm leaving you for the moment, Boy Blue, yeah, you"). Then, during the chorus, Lana starts a new relationship in LA (a hotter place) with a Latin lover, a Cuban man ("te deseo, cariño, boy, it's you I desire"), in search of that flame that was missing in her previous relationship. By the end of the song Lana is in love again, she is on fire.

Story telling is story telling. Truth telling is truth telling. Lana isn’t putting out content to please peoples morals or purity principle. She’s portraying lives and experiences that MANY people have actually gone through. I know I appreciated it bc I had gone through the gutters of a drug fueled abusive relationship before Lana ever existed. And it was the only time I felt like a song was written straight out of a page of my mental diary.

i love this album because lana isn't afraid to talk about these dark topics and really explore the messed up emotions that come with them, it really shows the reality of these situations and shows the complexity of these feelings without over simplifying them
@fairydoom73113 жыл бұрын
I’ve said this a lot of times on KZbin, but I feel like she sings from the perspective of an abused woman very very well. She captures the fact that people in these situations feel like they can not survive without their abuser, they are made to believe that it is true love, and that it isn’t abuse. They make excuses for the bad things their abuser does because they feel they can’t leave, that they are worthless, maybe that it’s even their fault. They don’t see it as abuse, they see it as ‘normal’ and just what happens to them, because that’s what he tells her. I absolutely don’t think she glamourised abuse , she’s just telling a story from a perspective we rarely hear from, and I actually think it’s important because I feel like to an outsider it is obvious her character is in an abusive relationship, and maybe someone will hear these songs and relate and realise themselves, and gain strength from the realisation.

Even beyond that, I feel like there's a double meaning to all of her songs through her takes on American culture. You could almost interpret ultraviolence as an ode to America and the complex relationship we have with it. The culture is toxic, obsessed with the bible and guns, appearing pretty on the surface but abusive when you take a deeper look. We have things like woodstock representing the free and rebellious spirit, and the glamor of New York where you get lost in the sea of faces and stories, and the nostalgia we have for the place we grew up. It's easy to get caught up in the aesthetics and ignore the real problems.

I think it’s interesting that you mentioned that Lana doesn’t come out and say “it’s wrong” when she’s singing about domestic abuse. I think it’s simplistic and somewhat Puritan to say that an artist can only explore darker themes if they put a big old waning sign that says THIS IS WRONG. It makes it feel like an after school special to gram art like that. Saying that a woman can’t explore her own history or an artist can’t show the perspective of living through abuse unless they sanitize it defeats its purpose. If someone can’t speak openly about their own experiences without considering the feelings of how the reality of her being beaten might upset others then that is simply a way of silencing and censoring women.

many have said this, but the other woman was a cover from nina simone. fans thought that nina simone sang it as if she's the wife, while lana sang it as like she's the other woman, and in the part before saying alone (35:55 listen to the song) she's like crying because of the pain of being just a mistress, because no matter what she does, he will still choose his wife in the end.

It's her 'Sgt. Peppers'. A breakout collection of varied and creative tracks with no less than 8 brilliant songs to her credit! And, three amazing ballads in 'Black Beauty', 'Old Money', and 'Pretty When You Cry'! Still her finest work to date!
@darioan16763 жыл бұрын
I read in one place of Internet that "Old Money" isnt about an another person but about her old herself, the Young and inoccent Lizzy. And also in "Sad Girl" The line says "Bonnie on her side" (Bonnie and Clay). Also "The Other woman" is a cover, she always includes a Cover in each album. Love your reactions! Sorry if my english is not the best.

"He hit me and it felt like a kiss," is a song written by Carole King for the girl group The Cryatals in 1962. These are lyrics from the original song, " If he didn't care for me I could have never made him mad But he hit me, and I was glad..." So, Lana gets all the flack for a lyric she didn't even write lol Just like many of her lyrics, she is referencing something/ someone else. It keeps things interesting, years later and I'm still learning her references.
@Luscent3 жыл бұрын
Wow that's super interesting actually though I think repurposing that lyric like 50 years later the social context is totally different so I can understand why it rubs people up the wrong way
@k.d.56033 жыл бұрын
@@Luscent I think it was pretty out there for the 60s as well. Can you imagine Lana singing the, "... but he hit me and I was glad" lyric?! Lol People/Media would've freaked out! Lana's always said & done what she wants (her Unreleased music can be much more controversial!) but in this case The Crystals' song would really make people gasp these days!

Someone might have let you know already but The Other Woman is a cover of the same song originally by Nine Simone, whom Lana takes great inspiration from :)

On Sad Girl, she's saying, "Bonnie (bonny) on the side", which is Sweetie, Cutie, Honey, Attractive woman on the side~ have you heard "bonny lass?" It's Scottish/ Northern England. Thought you'd have recognized it. 😊 And then it's also, "Money on the side" in the next lyric

Yeahhh that makes sense now you've said it! Tbf it's not always easy to figure out what she's saying on first listen hahaa

@@Luscent Have to agree with you there! Her pronunciation has become better over the years especially in NFR. The music is "softer" in that album as well, though, so you can hear her better, in general.

This is definitely my favorite Lana album, although it does dip in quality and starts thematically drifting in its second half. Her most consistent album? No. But for me her most sonically and conceptually enticing. You should react to the bonus tracks. It has some duds, but it also has some really good songs.
@Luscent3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree it does drift a bit though someone else in the comments said that each song can be considered another story of being addicted to darkness which links the songs well I think!

in Sad Girl she says "His Bonnie on the side, Bonnie on the side" referring to Bonnie & Clyde

On sad girl she IS the mistress. "it might not appeal to fools you like you". "But you haven't seen my man". She's justifying it. However she knows she's a sad girl, because she's the mistress. But she loves him so much she can't stop.

i think that in ultraviolence Lana is telling the story by the pov of the victim. so she says that it feels like true love and like a kiss bc a lot of times victims think that this is the way of the abuser show their love. i think she did an amazing job with that lyrics

I've read somewhere that some of the references she uses in ultraviolence are about Jim Jones (the infamous cult leader of Jonestown), including her saying that Jim is her cult leader in the song towards the end. The whole poison theme goes along with the entire cult being poisoned; he did use of violence with his people and they loved and worshipped him despite of it. And a mass death of hundreds is basically the most ultra-violent that you could get. Just a theory, tho.. but makes sense to me.
@Luscent3 жыл бұрын
Interesting theory! Is that the same cult leader Frank Ocean wrote about on Bad Religion?

It actaully says "his bonnie on the side'', a reference from movie and true story of Bonnie and Clyde, and I think she is is Bonnie. And also "watch what you say to me', careful who you talking to'' goes to people, because he is dangerous and he's gonna beat the fuck out of you if you annoy her. It's such a badass song
