One summer when I was a kid, it was REALLY hot. The sun would blare every day, and I spent a couple hours a day outside, doing wood burning (just letters, numbers, and names) with a magnifying glass. I had to stop though because I was getting such bad headaches. Turns out that the light beam on the wood was so bright it was damaging my eyes. Kids, don’t spend hours looking at a small dot of sunlight, cuz it’ll burn your retinas out.

On the whole magnifying glass thing, back when I was in primary school (think that translates to elementary school in the US?), we used to 'borrow' these tiny little plastic magnifying glasses that we would occasionally get in class and just burn the ever loving crap out of any stuff we could find on the field. I never burnt ants because I thought it was pretty harsh, but there were a couple that did, which eventually led our teachers banning it. Me and my mates used to constantly try and hoard dry leaves for sunny days and used them to send smoke signals to each other, nobody messed with you if you had a magnifying glass XD. Seems like a hundred years have passed in the last 10, but to a 20 year old that's half a life away. Thanks for bringing back the memories Leon! Much love to you and Mrs. Lush from the UK x

About magnifying glasses...My dad was able to get a few "broken" overhead projectors from the school my mother taught at, and he took them apart. The top portion of the projector had a magnifying lense that was pretty solid. Maybe 8 inches in diameter? He and I used it, and the sun, to mark our street address on our mailbox post. It was like engraving. It was there for years. There were a few times we used it to start a burn pile of yard waste. The other part of the projector was pretty cool too. It was just as large but it was like the opposite of a magnifying glass. Pretty cherished childhood memory...
