Dear Shishay & your guest - Samuel. Thank you both for your continuing effort to inform, educate, engage & enlighten z public. I understand only too well your many frustrations and disappointments amidst z ongoing crisis we are all experiencing individually & collectively, at home & in z diaspora, nationally & regionally & globally, in z cyberspace space & physical world, mentally & physically, socially & economically, politically & spiritually... The problems are simply too many to be enumerated here. Yet, if you look back at z recent & remote past, human history has never been free of crisis - large & small, crisis of every sort and their attendant human suffering & societal/economic/political/etc chaos have been & will remain part of existential reality. Having said this, I just want to throw z following humble yet critical input into z way you approached this very important discussion of what is really in essence quite a very complicated & messily entangled topic containing layers upon layers of equally quite crucial & still relevant & weighty issues. My considered opinion is as follows: to desist from z easy trap of dichotmizing issues (as our politicians are wont to do, e.g. z death-match between Reds vs Blues in Telaviv) into a mediocre vs meritocratic issues, instead approaching it like a physician would a sick patient. In other words, to take a wholesome approach of embracing z whole reality, taking a detached & objectiive & empirical assesment of z whole landscape - social media, diaspora community, home, region, etc, & then trying to integrate all the data (most of what Biniam cited as problems are mere symptoms of a hidden core national body-politic disease) in a systematic way, and then try to arrive at a preliminary diagnosis that prioritises existential issues, number one being: alleviating human pain & saving lives. To be effective & worthwhile, any human activity must start from an accurate & proper diagnosis. A good diagnosis most of times accomplishes more than 50% of z cure process. Of course, this is very much a multi-collaborative approach that seems almost impossible under our current too fragmented & atomized politics. But this too is part of life - presenting both a golden opportunity & a mammoth uphill battle ... an existential & a historic & an inter-generational challenge that will define z present & all of us living in z present (reds & blues, mediocre & z knowledgeable elites, active & onlookers, young & old, eplf & elf, etc) & z future of future generations. One thing i surely can tell u both, as z time ticks on in z present, is that FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION! THANK U BOTH. Hawkum B.

So Shishsy & Samuel: Here is a challenge for you: instead of z dichotomy between perception & reality, can u reframe z discussion to a more accommodative appearance vs reality issue? Then, try to work your way in an analytical way (separating z visible phenomenon in z cyberspace & concrete daily existence, including z despair, laziness, ignorance, polarisation, attractiveness of easy solutions offered by populist politicians, elite indifference, disregard/low respect of professionals, moral chaos, etc.) by categorising z issues into respective epistemic area (scientific naturistic domain of knowledge vs sociocultural/political/moral/spiritual domain of human knowledge which is quite different from z former) & then, finally, try to diagnose our national malady, i.e., to give a name or definition of Eritrea's disease. This is, as I wrote earlier, z very first step in z healing process. I have my diagnosis for what it is, but don't want to bias your discussion by proffering an answer here.

One more point: Always - & I mean always - start your discussion by defining important words with huge conceptual & ethical & practical relevance clearly & unambiguously. One such word is TRUTH (used many times by Biniam). What is truth? It has objective & subjective & normative & scientific components, all of which are quite crucial for reaching a correct diagnosis of our current problem. Once TRUTH is defined, it becomes a lot easier to understand & absorb & appreciate z chaotic & nervous breakdown that is our current reality.
