What you had to love about Luther was he was student of the music and the way we looked at him and his music, is the way he looked at all the people he had ever grew up listening to! Great story, great music! Peace!

And I gotta say, I was there when Luther opened for Chaka Khan in New York 81. Now she already had 8 years of hits and a powerful debut album under her belt, but Luther? Put on a Show! I remember saying to myself "Whoa, we are in for SOMETHING with this guy. And mind you, he already had years of voice recognition with advertisers galore! So it wasn't like he came out of no where. It was a remarkable career.

I'm glad he said "New York R&B/Soul" because that was the sound here in New York in the 1980's before the New Jack Swing movement took over, which was heavy bass or heavy Synth bass lines.

I used to wonder what Dee Dee Warwick meant when she said “Motown sound” was not her thing, Luther clearly explains with that simple comment.
